@Turtledude ..... Working up my courage to completely disassemble my 1858 and give it a proper cleaning. I have already removed the loading lever and the grips and the trigger guard and cleaned what was easy to clean without taking absolutely all of the internal bits out.

That was enough to tell how filthy the inside is because I have never cleaned it and I did buy it used and I doubt anyone else ever clean the inside. I do know the screws require precise screwdriver sizes because they are not very hard and they are easy to strip and you are not going to the hardware store to pick these up.

It's a labor of love but you can see why I only shoot it about once a year. I must have spent an hour and a half today cleaning it and I did not even take it fully down.

You know I had thought about using brake parts cleaner but I wondered if it might mess up the bluing? I should have spent a couple hundred bucks more back in the day and got the stainless gun.

But of course being made of stainless steel is no excuse to be lazy and not clean it.

Do you think carburetor cleaner would be better then brake parts cleaner?

The cylinder stop bolt that protrudes from the bottom of the frame sometimes does not want to retract back on half ( I guess The forum software won't let me say the word for a male rooster) and that leads to the cylinder being locked up. From what little bit I have disassembled it I can tell the inside is nasty

Making raw black powder is only half the battle. You must then take that fine powder and corn it into the right granulation size for your particular caliber.

One day this will be important information to someone.

    @Turtledude
Sorry to keep pestering you with the mention function but I wanted to make sure that you saw this video because I'm sure that you could appreciate it.

These are the fireworks that my daddy played with. By the time I came along in 1980.... The world had gone soft and you were not allowed to play with these anymore.

I don't encourage anyone without a explosives license to even attempt anything like this. You can easily lose fingers or freedom or your life.

Just remember the United States used to be a place where boys grew up playing with these before we all become sissyfied.

Don't try this at home... Aside from being illegal without the proper licensing it is extremely dangerous and hazardous to your health and is presented for informational purposes only.

You can always blow your hand off tomorrow. But remember that you are not a lizard and your hand / tail will not grow back today or even in a series of tomorrows.

Watch the video but remember not to ever try this. These people are licensed professionals and under no circumstances should anyone ever attempt this unless they are also licensed professionals. In the best case scenario this is a criminal action without the proper license.... In the worst case scenario this will make you a crippled individual, in addition to recovering in jail.... If it doesn't kill you.

Happy stick full of freedom pills! God bless Murica! Now comes the fun part... Clean all those barrels!

You folks that can shoot smokeless powder are spoiled... You can fire them and put them away dirty even though it's not recommended.... They won't rust up into a useless pile of metal in a very short period of time.

You better not try that with any black powder gun

from 1981-till 1996 I went to columbia every year for mainly dove shooting. My father shot an old Browning2000 semi auto. the ammo down there was Columbian Military arms company-using Fiocchi components but it was a bit dirtier. carburetor cleaner was easy to get near Cali columbia and he'd soak the piston in that stuff over night-we were shooting 400-600 shells a day. It worked great

Tip in on end, crank it,. and spray solvent down the barrels. Turn the entire assembly for 30 seconds or so
Wipe off the excess from the breech end.

Brake cleaner is serious stuff -- if your gun is -that- dirty, you've done something very wrong.

You ever shot black powder cap and ball? I believe I read that something like 1/3 of the weight of black powder remains in the bore and on the gun as fouling.

If you don't Grease the arbor pin the cylinder rotates around.... You get about four cylinders through the gun before the cylinder actually starts to bind, forcing you to actually take your hand and help it rotate.

But oddly enough and it's something I'm leaning towards..... One of the best ways to clean a cap and ball is good old hot soapy water. The residue is water soluble and using good hot water helps it dry quickly.

Which specific ones do you believe were staged? To me, a video that shows mishaps is good for people to see as a reminder to always be extra careful when handling a weapon. My dad taught me to always always always assume a gun is loaded. I taught my kids the same thing.

This is true. And every single one of those cases you can see a gross violation of one of the four or more basic gun safety rules. Every single one of those incidents was preventable simply by following the four basic rules

We should probably go back to teaching those in school

This guy is an absolute moron doing something that only morons do. He is using smokeless powder and a muzzle loading firearm which is a great way to make it blow up in your hand.

There is a reason it is stamped right on the side of the barrel " black powder only ".

This is because smokeless powder used in modern guns creates a faster pressure curve and the steel in muzzle loading guns is not as hard as a modern gun. The only powder that should ever be used in a muzzle loading gun as the correct black powder or black powder substitutes. NEVER smokeless powder.

This moron clearly demonstrates that he knows that you're not supposed to do that but he's going to go ahead and do it anyways. Darwin is surely lurking nearby. Spoiler alert... Nothing bad happened but it's not for lack of him trying.

They're always has to be one in every crowd that thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Never mind the couple of hundreds of years of human experience with these things

Here's the one I was looking for last night. The result of smokeless powder in a muzzleloading revolver. Fortunately the person was not injured. And very fortunately for him he only had one cylinder loaded. If all six were loaded it would have been a disaster. One has to be a real moron to be aware of the potential of danger like this and do it anyway

    @Montegriffo
Here in the United States in the State of Florida I can only legally use and possess certain muzzleloaders made on or before 1918 or their reproductions.

Having watched tons of videos on these guns ( specifically cap and ball revolvers ) I see a lot of people from some other countries commenting that this is all they can use including a comment I just recently saw from the UK.

Are these guns legal and relatively unregulated in the UK?

They might take 10 minutes to load and be a real pain in the ass to clean... But once you have them loaded you have six shots ready to go.

As far as I know you still need a Firearms Certificate (FAC) to legally own a black powder gun. All the usual restrictions apply including medical assessments, secure storage etc.
Making your own black powder also requires a licence and is heavily regulated.
