Get rid of Patriot Act, NDAA and NEVER allow the second amendment to be infringed on. The forefathers had a very different perspective and they knew that an armed and educated people could control their government. Now the people are completely lost and the government is running us over a little at a time. Granted its slow, and right now it doesnt "seem" bad. But you have to look at history and the direction we are heading to realize how bad it is going to get.

But the legislation you mention was passed by a democratically elected legislature. I don't think the same legislature is going to make it go away, not without some pressure on it.

The people are becoming angry. Approval ratings in Congress keeps dipping into single digits. They will change it if someone just had the balls to propose the idea.

I doubt it. The problem is that since 9/11 Americans have been told that the world changed (absolutely true) and that they are in daily danger of being exterminated from a terrorist attack (doubtful). In order to prevent extermination it's necessary to go to war on a concept; institute repressive laws which probably won't do anything more than make life difficult for Americans but which give the appearance of something being done; and generally chuck out any semblance of regard for human rights and freedoms. To get a legislature to reverse it's rush to authoritarianism in a blind panic will require an honest admission that the response to 9/11 has been largely ineffectual and ill-advised. Know a politician that will admit a mistake and take responsibility for it? I don't.

The world got alot worse for america the day she decided to try to police the world. And besides, Ron Paul didn't make that mistake. The Patriot act and NDAA are very wrong. They lead us down a dark path. I think what people don't realize is it is impossible to be in a safe world. Sure our government can protect us well, but we are either going to have danger from outside our country, or from within.

It certainly seems, from what I've read about it, that the legislation is quite startling. What is also quite disturbing is the convergent thinking in the legislature, it seems nearly everyone was for it and very few against it. That could mean that it's absolutely brilliant legislation and no-one could really disagree with it - or it could mean that legislators think that's what the people want. Who knows? It's actually quite sad; sad that legislators think it's needed, sad that so many people seem to agree and sad that it should even appear in the popular imagination.

Just a bit of a quibble, America never sought to police the world, just - like other imperialist powers before it - to protect and extend its economic interests. Whereas the British didn't need to pretend their Empire was anything but about stripping the assets of weaker nations the US has operated in a very different environment from the 18th Century world and has had to disguise its imperialist motivations to make them acceptable to their own citizens and to the rest of the world. Make no mistake though, it's the same motivation.

I agree. The people obviously did not want it. Or at least that is what I saw. But the leaders of this country are ABSOLUTELY out of touch with all of Americans. Most americans are just like WTF IS GOING ON.

Hey, how about we take the 24,000 + gun laws we have and reduce them down to say 25 or 30 laws that everyone understands!

I have to agree with you. As you said to me previously in this thread. That is right on target as well. As Americans we pride ourselves in being so much better than the rest of the world. Yet we allow our political parties to lead us like sheep to slaughter. Our government uses the divide and conquer strategy on us to great effect. As I said in another thread 1/3 of us fight on one side of the spectrum. While another 1/3 defend the other spectrum. Yet another 1/3 wonder what we are fighting about. While the 1% that remain make the laws and decide our fates.Yet because of our political polarization
if leaders of both sides. Ever come together and tell us war is nessary we follow without question. I myself am guilty of all of the above. I see it I wish to stop it but yet I must defend my own beliefs. So I make a deal with the devil. While I
support in my mind the lesser of two evils. What can one man do waste a vote on a third party. I support the 2nd amendment as the right that defends all others. Yet I watch as all of our rights are slowly removed. Never at a pace that
would cause us to rise to arms. Just let them convince us that was just a right that caused more harm than good. We all don't agree but enough do to allow it to happen. What would Americans be most concerned with at these times. Some say the debt but neither party has solutions. They watch as their subjects fight over free birthcontrol and gay marriage. Important to some yes the most pressing issue not close. Once heard a saying that stated democracy was two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. While I don't think I agree with statement alone. I can't help but wonder if the wolves are named democrats and republican. With the people and our constution being the sheep.

I wouldn't worry about the state of the 2nd Amendment though, I would think it's pretty safe.

Well for starters some of the opinions in the quote of mine have changed. As I have read and looked deeper into issues. Him ruling to the right of center has not. I can address your response however it will not be favorable to the republicans. I am an independent that favors Obama not being reelected. The least damaging way I could say it would be that is not a good indicator of left vs right spectrum. If you want a more detailed response I will oblige. Yet I caution you will not like the facts.

    No it doesn't.

This isn't even close to a rational or realistic ideal.

Are you familiar with any laws covering possession and use of firearms in the US?

Always strikes me as funny, those that bring up the UK as some kind of paradigm for gun control policy making. You do realize that while the UK has a lower incidence of gun crimes (they still occur though) their rate of violent crimes exceeds the US's? Having been born in the UK, visited numerous times in my life, and have family still living there I have absolutely no desire to live in such a nanny state. A country where you can be arrested for having a wrench within the passenger compartment of your vehicle because it can constitute an "offensive weapon" unless it is secured in a tool box and stored in the trunk. I had my British cousins for a visit last month and when explained that in this part of the country it was perfectly legal and acceptable to possess a firearm for defense of home or self they didn't cringe, to them it was a perfectly logical concept. They don't see guns as the problem, just the criminals.
