Has Amazon made a big mistake by not making Android apps available for use?

I used to think Amazon Kindle's were a type of android device, but you have to root it to install Google Play apps on there.
Shouldn't they help their sales and reputation by just allowing them on there by default?

Or you can just buy a Google Nexus.

I like my Kindle, but I have just the ereader with 3G/wifi. The Kindle tablet is pretty cool, but it is a consumption device for Amazon products.
