If Biden were president, things would be exponentially worse at this point. He criticized Trump as being xenophobic when he shut the planes down from China in early January. And Sanders? Don't get me started! He claimed during the recent Town Hall that we would NOT shut the borders, even now! (His illogical thinking was that since the virus is already here, it's too late. So riiiiiight…...let's keep on importing more virus by the planeful.)

Thankfully we have a president who puts the interests (and lives!) of Americans ahead of foreigners who have no intrinsic "right" to be here, especially when they are coming from infected countries.

One million dead is a middle case scenario from the CDC.

 

A) Biden did not call Trump's partial travel restriction from China xenophobic. He said this is not the time for Trump's history xenophobia and racism, but there was no connection in his statement to that specific Trump action. Indeed, it is much more likely that Biden was talking about the history of xenophobia and racism that immediately resulted in a significant spike of reported instances of abuse reported by asians across the globe and in this country.

B) If Biden were President, then you can be certain that a much higher percentage of Americans would have taken this threat much sooner instead of listening to Trump who repeatedly lied about the virus, downplayed the threat it poses, touted the benefits of the virus, used the word hoax while discussing the virus, disbanded the pandemic response team, and refused to encourage an acceleration of testing early on because he was afraid it would hurt his re-election chances. Now, would a President who did none of those things be better for the country? I think so, but it's a fictional world where unfortunately we do not live and instead we have a President that did, in fact, do all those things.

C) We are already an infected country and I would be willing to bet that our total number of infections will become the highest in the world very soon (although maybe not the highest on a per capita basis). Restricting international and domestic travel is part of the solution, but educating the public and strongly encouraging/enforcing social distancing, better health practices, and getting people ready to hunker down in their homes should they get sick is the more important step. And Trump's failure to do those steps early is one of his most significant failings.
