Policing oneself doesn't generally go well. I'm not sure this is going to go over well with the general public. This election's theme was "draining the swamp". Removing an independent ethics body and folding it within a Congressional committee seems to suggest a continued tone deafness from Washington.

*I'm on a learning curve. This is my first thread so I may not get the format correct.....bear with me..*

Is this what being 'anti-establishment' is supposed to look like?

"Drain the swamp" was Trump's message, not establishment Republicans. This has to come up for a vote before the full House, we'll see what happens then. In any case, it's a rules change in Congress and has nothing to do with Trump.

I would offer that it does have something to do with President Elect Trump, albeit indirectly. He did run with a specific message and he ran as a Republican. He is the leader of the Republican party so this vote would seem to be in contrast to what the President Elect has promised to do. Of course, we can argue whether or not he is a true Republican but that's an discussion for another seed.

Listening to the current reports on this story, it is being said that the primary complaint being levied against the Ethics Office from the GOP members is that the investigations were too public. I'm sure we'll learn more in the coming days.

He is not an establishment republican, and most didn't support him. Not exactly sure how you think he has any influence, considering he doesn't even hold any office atm...

I don't think it's such a stretch to think an incoming President would have influence over the party he is considered the leader of but I do get your point that those who voted for this change were part of the establishment.

What are your general thoughts on having the Ethics Office shut down?

I'm sorry you just can't make excuses for this kind of behavior.

Hahaha - Yeah, you have a point. I'm pretty sure that's why Paul Ryan was against shutting it down.

I am of the opinion that we should fire everyone who has ever held office and reboot.

The reason we voted for Trump and not Kasich is because we are sick of this (*)(*)(*)(*). Your side put up the establishment candidate, knowing that Sanders was conspired against.

Hillary was the antithesis of anti-establishment. That is why we have president trump.

Oh yea and the democrats aren't perfect but they wouldn't attack independent ethic panels.
The only reason you do that is if you're going to do dirty corrupt (*)(*)(*)(*) and you don't wanna get caught. Drain the swamp? Give me a break.

Again... trump has nothing to do with this. We are in agreement on the first part of your post.

Trump is the President, if he has no influence over his party he's just a rubber stamper. Are you saying trump is a rubber stamper?

In a few weeks. I guess we will see if trump disapproves of this. Likely won't. He won't say a damn thing about it. He's a spineless coward and never does the right thing.

If there was an effective Ethics Panel there wouldn't have been a crooked Hillary, a crooked IRA, a crooked DOJ or a crooked President.

Appointing a panel or forming a committee is not necessarily solving a problem.

More fake news. They just stopped taking anonymous complaints and rightfully so. There are laws to protect whistle blowers.

It likely has to do with the staffing. The background on average leans very left.

Age has taught me well. First, examine the message. Pick up the message, spin it, wad it up, pull it out and study it.

    Ask

    What is the context?
    Is that the entire message
    Is it actually accurate
What is the background of the message

IF it stands up to all of that, then look at the issue in great detail.
