So, it's been 22 years since 9/11. May the victims rest in peace. But that's not what this thread is about. I just wanted to say a few simple things. I want America back. The America that we admired as kids. The America of law and order. The America of opportunities. The America of culture - a country with great music and great movies. The America of Hollywood, not Sinwood. The America of decent hardworking Americans and producing economy. The America of a strong middle class. The America of Willy Tanner and Alf. The America of no-tents-on-the-street. The America that is not "woke" and "drugged". The America where good triumphs over evil. The America of Bruce Willis, not thugs and pimps. The America of hope and justice for all. That, however, continues to be my wish. What about you?
This sounds a lot like you think the social aspects of the country are going in the wrong direction. By almost every measure (wealth distribution being one of the glaring exceptions) the US is far better off than it was before 9/11. Crime is down across the board. More people are literate and educated than ever before. Young people are more politically engaged. The kinds of arguments we're having now (like "woke" culture, which I don't think anyone can define in a way that's useful) are the kind we can have when we aren't as distracted by other, more immediate problems. As to your complaints about media, it sounds a lot like typical "kids today don't know what good music even is!" kind of talk. There are so many good movies these days that don't glorify violence and don't contain casual sexual assault and racism. There are artists doing incredible things musically. I can't imagine thinking it would be better to trade those just to go back to the TV, movies, and music of the '80s. And I'm a child of the '80s. I have very fond memories of stuff from back then, but I can appreciate newer media, too.
I'd like to go back to the days when Mel Brooks movies, Dean Martin roasts and Benny Hill were considered funny and not offensive.
I agree to a point only. I would love to see the middle class stronger, and homelessness down, and the economy improving. But I also don't want certain freedoms to be lost either. There are those who would say that they want America back. The America where blacks and whites knew their separate places and women obeyed and never questioned. Where children did as they were told, no matter how much it might hurt them. Forget it. I want the America where I can live my life as I want to without having to worry about the law telling me I am wrong, when what I do harms no one save maybe the ones who are with me by consent. If I want a black wife or a asian husband, what harm is it to others, other than their fragile egos and sensibilities? Sadly other parts of what you want never were. America was only a land of opportunities for some. Until recently many classes were kept down and told to know their place. Filthy Jews and the damned Irishman. And opportunities if you were black or hispanic? Minimal. Drugged? Drugs have been a problem since the founding. It's really only recently that we have been allowing it to be more visible to hopefully better deal with it. But then we want to punish not help those with drug issues. And every generation is more woke than the previous ones. The word may be new, but the concept isn't. What do you think black's rights and women's rights were if not the same thing as "woke". Hell the reality is that pretty much every generation thinks that the one before it had it easier and the one following it is making a mess of things. The past was too conservative and the future too liberal. Great music and great movies. I personally think that we have that now. But in the end, that's pure opinion. In fact, any concept as to whether things are better or worse, falls purely under opinion. I find many things better than when I was growing up, and many things worse.
It's not happening as long as the progressives are in charge. They are going to indoctrinate the kids so that they will be ashamed of their country. That's the progressive way. Always angry; always full of hate.
You'll realize you've grown old in a negative way, when you reject new music across the board. May God beware us all from this condition. Btw, most of us live in their own homegrown hell.
What are you basing sin off of? What is woke? As to a strong middle class, you should look at charts and see when wealth really started accumulating at the top and being sucked from the bottom (hint: look around Regans term). Drug use is highly correlated to poverty as is crime. So if we can address one, all three should be reduced.
Just like WW2, we are no longer innocent in the eyes of the world when 9/11 came. But America has always been here. It constantly changes. I guess you are not old enough when there were no metal detectors at airports, huh?
That was probably just a delusion that has been replaced by new ones. The misinformation has shifted from promoting patriotism and hatred of foreign adversaries to promoting hatred of the other political tribe.
Based on my guess as to your age (close to mine, 66) there are some folks who would likely not prefer to turn back the clock to yesteryear. Like women, gays, and racial minorities.
That is Trump personified. Plus he should be real concerned about his negative polling with young voters on so many of his policies.
As of late I have been doubting we will ever get her back. Too much corruption. Too many people in upper echelons where greed has them willing to sell out anyone or anything. Too many people to lazy and narcissistic to learn about history or to care for future generations. They've got us in a trap. Americans don't think anymore about individual liberty. They think in "collectives" and "identity politics". "It's a damn shame". Sorry for the downer. I'm just starting to dream more about the blessings of heaven. Can't change it back myself.
Yeah, they don't like merit anymore. They want it handed to them and "participation trophies". Even you......you confuse women and racial minorities which are peoples birth identity with "gay behavior". Confusing the language is a big part of leftist strategy.
If we executed every drug dealer and imprisoned drug users, the problem would be over quite quickly. Singapore does this and it appears to work. My cousin was thrown in prison decades ago for drug use and it literally saved his life. What does America do? We give addicts free needles and let them shoot up on the street. The results speak for themselves. Ironic that the left can't stop prattling on about gun violence..... while drugs are now killing more people in America than guns and cars COMBINED. IT IS NOT POVERTY. My grandparents were DIRT poor farmers. They did not have electricity. They did not have indoor plumbing. They made their own clothes. Drug use makes you poor. Being poor does not make you use drugs. Most drug abusers are the children of wealthy or middle class parents. This indicates that drug use is associated with lack of meaning in life and not poverty. Not really surprising given the bottomless pit of nihilism and debauchery that our culture feeds to children.
The Hell it didn't It was alive and kicking until Obama decided to raise afresh every racist trope that Americans of every race creed and color of good will had spent forty year trying to kill and bury in the unmarked grave they so richly deserved.
as someone noted, the way things are going, this date in 100 years will be celebrated while July Fourth will go the way of Columbus day
