There are a lot of articles out there on this, and the REPUBLICANS just voted to cap pay for nurses, many claiming they need to resign in costs for healthcare, yet they refuse to act on those costs.

But the real issue here is, the free market REPUBLICANS are capping pay. Think about that for 2 seconds, republics are capping pay on the working class. FTR, Traveling nurses in my state dont really make that much more then regular nurses.

WTF is going on with the Republican Party ?

Market should determine the minimum and govt should determine the cap? Seems nutty.

Traveling nurses are expensive because of a lack of supply. Capping pay will only make that worse.

But the hipocrisy of the Republicans for doing this is just stunning to me

This does seem like a bizarre thing for Republicans to do, and you are right to point it out.

I think probably the mentality behind it is that the state government is paying money to nursing homes, and this money ends up being siphoned off to temp agencies to facilitate bringing in temporary nurses, so the government thinks they have a right to get involved.

Maybe they think that this will end up squeezing the temp agencies more than the nurses, that is the thinking. That nurses will still have to be paid prevailing wages but it will be temp agencies that have to suffer the squeeze.

But this seems like the wrong way to go about it.

Maybe I am wrong, and I invite anyone to argue with me, but this policy seems to suggest a poor understanding of free market principles.

Is there a link to this story?

BTW, traveling nurses make good money and often get pretty large signing bonuses.

I'd also like to point out that the Democrats are guilty of doing this too. Obamacare cut reimbursement rates, which would end up cutting pay for nurses, so it was no surprise that Nursing unions opposed Obamacare. More work but less pay per patient, in a situation where nurses in most hospitals already feel overwhelmed with patient loads.

My point is a traveling nurse is not struggling. How much does a nurse make in Iowa? In my neck of the woods it's about $2500 per week.

The republicans in this state also just approved a bill that allows takes away all power form the state auditor so we dont know what their spending

Who cares what they make. I dont see them capping pay for Dr’s, or for ANYONE, in ANY profession…..

This is the Iowa Legislature who are as corrupt as they come. These people no longer get audited (they voted to strip the Sate Auditor (and elected official) of any power he had to review. They just passed a bill to allow teacher to carry guns in class(with no training requirements). They passed a bill to subsidize private schools (using funds meant for public schools) in the state, and surprise surprise, 80% of that money when to students already in those private schools, and the public schools budgets were cut.

Who are these people that call themselves republicans ?

Why? I wrote this a few days ago to a right wing poster spouting BS about conservatives wanting small government:

This is conservative politics 101 - 'big government' is bad for ME but not for THEE. This is how modern conservativism works.

There was a time when conservatives didn't bother to hide their love of government power. In more recent generations they have created elaborate and extremely hollow rhetoric about 'small government' as a way to attack their political & social enemies, but the moment government intervention serves their ends they do it without hesitation or shame. This is not even debatable for anyone who is capable of thought. You actually have to work to convince yourself otherwise - ideology produces the functional equivalent of idiocy.

You think $120 a year is a lot of money ? Why dont they cap administrator pay ? You want to lower the cost of healthcare, cutting nurses pay is the last place you should cut

Decades of observation and lots of reading history.

Read my signature - it is the perfect summary of conservatism. Any given day on this forum multiple conservatives prove it to be true - they expect the law to protect but not bind them and bind but not protect the groups they don't like. Everything else is distraction.

There are some upper level salaries that could use a cap, if the GOP is in the mood to monitor costs in the industry but capping wages is stupid

The entire point of a traveling nurse is to get nurses to go where there are nursing shortages. Now Republicans want to cap the incentives for it? Congratulations Republicans, you just made sure nursing shortages remain a huge problem in the areas that have them and relied on traveling nurses to mitigate it. Way to go free market champions!

Just goes to show that faith in the free market is only important sometimes, because the free market is not going to solve problems that require actual real solutions. Mostly because the free market doesn't "DO" anything.
