Because we are born with them. Not all are good. I have the natural right to kill you for instance as you have the right to defend yourself. Laws limit our natural rights. We do this for the common good.

There are no special rights all laws limit rights. Taking away my right to discriminate for instance with anti discrimination laws.

We have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Of course these are rights that we imagine we have because we live in a free and open society.

But how can it be a fundamental right if it can be taken away by the governments in power???

And many of these so called rights come to us because we [humans] are the most advanced society and creature on this planet Earth.

But put a more advanced species, let's say Extraterrestrials, into the equation and suddenly if they want us dead we don't have the right to life anymore, but they can maintain their own right to life as far as those on the top of the pyramid or web of life get to dictate who has what rights.

And the top's rights supersede the rights of those lower of status. So NO LIFE is not an inherent right.

So youre saying that a right is just what I can and cannot do, with or without law. For instance, I could kill you, or I could protect you. While yes, we are born with these abilities (or at least, we should get them when we grow up), i do not think this classifys as a right, more so as just an ability. Rights are things we gurantee to people, like the right of free speech, or the right to bear arms. We as a society tell people they are permitted to do these things, to use these abilities. So yes, what you say is true, but i think rights are more so a disguised way of saying you are allowed to use these abilities.

No they are not. We take away the right to kill in order to protect the right to life. We do not grant rights nor does government. They limit protect or deny rights.
