Richard Bong with 40 confirmed downed Jap planes. Could be wrong.

You are. Bong was the leading American ace, but not the leading Allied ace.

Not what I was thinking of. Did it or its class cause any significant damage to the RN?

a 320 mm salvo from Giulio Cesare aimed at HMS Warspite had straddled two British destroyers, HMS Hereward and HMS Decoy, causing some splinter damage on both of them.

On 17 November 1940, Giulio Cesare took part of a naval force which sailed to intercept Operation White, a British attempt to transfer fighter aircraft to Malta; seven pilots and nine warplanes were lost when the Italian Navy presence forced a premature take-off from the aircraft carrier HMS Argus. She was later assigned to covering convoys, participating in the First Battle of Sirte,

Hmmm nope- looking for a class of naval vessel that did considerably more damage than that. Specially to the RNS.

I would disagree slightly citing Ilmari Juutilainen of Finland with 94 confirmed kills although Finland was never formally a part of either the Axis or Allied powers. The primary enemy of Finland was Russia that invaded Finland in 1939 during the "Winter War" and Finland received Allied support although WW II wasn't official. The 94 confirmed kills were against Russian aircraft that the Fins were very good at dealing with using inferior aircraft but superior tactics. Of course Russia wasn't an "Allied" nation at this time.

After the Winter War Finland did have diplomatic relations with Nazi Germany but remained neutral country.

The question was:Who was the leading Allied "ace" in WW2, and how many victories did he have? So a Finnish guy who was shooting down (Russian) aircraft would not be counted. Finland were not allies. The poster who asked the question was happy that my answer was correct.

A manned torpedo is hardly a warship.

Here's my question for the WW II trivia fans. The Yamato, with it's nine 18.1" guns is arguably the largerst battleship ever built. It saw considerable action during WW II but it is believed that it only sank one ship and didn't use it's 18.1" guns to sink that ship. Can anyone name the only ship that the Yamato is believed to have sank?

I recall Yamato sank one of Taffy 3's destroyers at Leyte, using her 6" secondary guns.

You've got the battle correct as it was during the Battle of Samar which was the key engagement in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and you are also correct that the Yamato used it's secondary guns but what ship was it?

I accept that my question was perhaps misleading. But I did find it amusing that this was the vessel that caused more damage than any capital ship of the Italian fleet.
