ITT Tech shuts down all its schools; one student says he's 'angry times 10 million'

"The day after the U.S. Education Department’s August decision, California imposed further restrictions on ITT. Citing concerns about the company’s financial viability, the state Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education issued an emergency decision banning ITT from accepting new students at its 15 California locations.

The state also planned to seek to revoke ITT’s approval to operate in California.

ITT blamed its closure on what it called unwarranted federal action.

“The damage done to our students and employees, as well as to our shareholders and the American taxpayers, is irrevocable,” ITT said.

“We believe the government’s action was inappropriate and unconstitutional, however, with the ITT Technical Institutes ceasing operations, it will now likely rest on other parties to understand these reprehensible actions and to take action to attempt to prevent this from happening again,” the company said.

U.S. Education Secretary John B. King Jr. said Tuesday that his agency did not take its action lightly and that federal officials were committed to helping ITT’s students.

“The school’s decisions have put its students and millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded federal student aid at risk,” King said in a blog post.

“We made a difficult choice to pursue additional oversight in order to protect you, other students and taxpayers from potentially worse educational and financial damage in the future if ITT was allowed to continue operating without increased oversight and assurances to better serve students,” he said.

At ITT’s campus on W. 190th Street in Torrance, a terse note taped to the main office door told anyone who might show up to refer to their email for more information. Students were angry and bewildered.

"It's starting to feel like maybe I wasted the last four years," said Nancy Valdez, 27, of Long Beach.
    "

The underlined is partial true: They banned the school from accepting government backed financial AID. (they was just stealing tax payer money. See link below)

I feel bad for those not in the know, and for the victims/students...but who didn't see this coming? Education should not be for profit. We (USA) for some reason own that market an look what it got us...people actually voting for Trump.

This hits close, I almost fell for this for profit school crap, back in the Bush years, just like Dytech an home loans. I knew it was a bubble...glad it is about to pop...hopefully with more democrats in office more fraud crap like this will come to a close. This was long overdue thanks to conservative obstruction, but in the end we prevailed. This goes along way to reimbursing students for Bulls#$t school loans, and it starts here.

Technically the company will still have one school open and the students eligible for financial aid. They also own Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire....for now. It has a somewhat well regarded aviation program and operates more like a traditional university.

It's not crap IMO. I graduated from DeVry. ITT was very much like DeVry and had an excellent reputation. Now the FTC is messing with DeVry. Something fishy going on.

Probably wasn't a liberal enough organization and didn't donate enough to the Democratic Party, like all the other colleges in the country. Learning a tangible skillset is a big "no-no" on the left, unless of course you go to work for a big labor union who raises lots of cash for Democrats.

No..ITT Closed because (*)(*)(*)(*) poor management, and predatory practices.
I blame Conservatives for obstructing this administration and it taking this long to get this ball rolling on reducing school costs, and actually holding for profit training centers accountable for just floating students through, leaving them with massive debt and right back where they started in the job market.
ITT tech is not collage, collage is for actually learning, Tech schools are supposed to fill the gap Union apprenticeship cant.
I'm glad we have such a nice local shop..or this would directly have affected me, and your tax dollars as i would have used the GI Bill to attend, where as my apprenticeship was free.

    I'm open to opinion though.

Another, but different aspect of the dumbing down like the decision in Apple V Microsoft suit had imposed on promising, functional technology.

    Time to alter or abolish.

Perhaps we should all be thanking Elizabeth Warren for this, or better still ride her out of Washington on a fence rail.
