Fake news has been around for a while, mostly during times of war, where it served as propaganda. But conservative efforts to mislead the public have now followed a 20-year drum beat from Faux News and hate radio. Following the exposure of purely fake news being churned out this past year, when even housewives made more than $10,000 a month writing fiction (thanks to click bait and paid Google advertising), the future of journalism is pretty much gone. The latest chapter is that now conservatives have adopted the term fake news and painted it on all legitimate news sources. We have the Internet to thank for this, but follow the money trail: clickbait advertising revenue. Someone said Google may stop paying these fake news sites, but we will see. Nice editorial today on all this at: Conservatives are trying to give us all a headache — and not just by taking away our health insurance and worshipping Donald Trump. They are launching an attack on the concept of reality itself. This is not entirely new, of course. The right has made good use of propaganda and the old “you can believe me or you can believe your lying eyes” routine for many years. Recall that back in the early 2000s, many of us were alarmed to see Iraq war propaganda making its way into the mainstream, eagerly passed on by major newspapers and cable news shows. The people pushing the attack had a long history of advocating for the invasion before 9/11 and had even made clear they were hoping for a pretext. Nonetheless, in those days of compulsory patriotic flag-waving the media showed no inclination to be even slightly skeptical, and the result was catastrophic. http://www.salon.com/2016/12/27/now...-war-against-truth-goes-back-long-before-911/
Some people believe media shilling for and fawning over Hillary was fair and and balanced. We all have our biases don't we?
Did "click-bait" tactics destroy the credibility of traditional news sources, or did traditional news sources surrender ethics to political ideology? For me, the proverbial housewife with a click-bait site is akin to neighborhood kids running a lemonade stand. It might make a few bucks, but shouldn't be a threat to Coke a Cola. But in this particular case, Coke started selling half empty cans and the lemonade stand became prosperous. (Can't blame the kid with the lemonade stand)
I see. Now that you perceive you are being gored by the ox the left has always nurtured and mastered, and still does (ironically you use Salon as a source), you find fake news abhorrent, simply abhorrent! Did you ever see the movie Casablanca? Your thread is the equivalent of Captain Louis Renault who is "shocked" to discover gambling in Rick's Cafe. Very amusing. Very hypocritical. "Journalism" has been dead for decades but you seem only just now to have noticed. Very self serving of you.
LOL Liberals are the undisputed kings of fake news. Benghazi fake video to cover up the treason of the Obama administration to save Americans defending themselves, Trump's BS sexual harassment claims that dried up, Hillary's obvious health problems. Salon itself accused all white people of the attack on the Charleston Church something that was such a pathetic lie its hard to even comprehend they had the audacity to say it. And you have the gall to accuse the right of fake news
Journalism is not dead. Its still around, just not in the mainstream media. What you and the "progressives" hate is that people have turned away from the mainstream media "progressive" propaganda machine. And that is what is so interesting - that you think your propaganda is journalism, and that actual journalism is "fake" news. Very revealing as to your brainwashing.
Responding to the question, "How far do you go with the tabloid sensibility to get readers?", former Salon.com editor-in-chief David Talbot said: Is Salon more tabloid-like? Yeah, we've made no secret of that. I've said all along that our formula here is that we're a smart tabloid. If by tabloid what you mean is you're trying to reach a popular audience, trying to write topics that are viscerally important to a readership, whether it's the story about the mother in Houston who drowned her five children or the story on the missing intern in Washington, Chandra Levy.[10] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salon_(website) You are using a Tabloid to complain about others supposedly posting fake news?
For the fourth time ... We've had fake news from fools like Stewart, Colbert, and Maher for a couple decades.
My thing about sites that don't allow adblock when they whine about not getting revenue from it is that I wouldn't use adblock if their ads were not so intrusive. Sick of the 5 popup windows every time I click something other than an ad. As for traditional journalism--it is dead. It died the day CBS decided to pay Katie Couric a trillion dollars a minute to read the evening news.
The alphabet medias and the cable leftist media empires are hurting...and this election cycle and the lefts behavior has amplified that downward spiral. Part of their problem now, is that it isn't just restricted to news. The celebrities tried to force themselves vehemently against Trump prior to the election and post election...challenging the very principles of the Republic and democratic values. They have pushed their leftist agendas obviously prior to this election, but as everyone witnessed, this was something completely different. So now, after they proved themselves to be completely impotent and irrelevant they have alienated over half of the American populace against them and their livelihood, becoming part and parcel of the news medias dilemma. I would go so far as to say, since most of the civilized nations line up left and right politically, that they have also alienated themselves for half of those populations globally.
Well OP, everything has gone downhill. As long as 2 hairy homos can be husband and wife...Trump can be prez and fake new can be worth more than real news. That is just how things ended up in our world. Once standards decline that is how it goes. The Dems think they can just do what they like, but as they degrade standards it affects ALL areas of life. The Dems cant just have things their own way. The Dems (*)(*)(*)(*)ed the US, so the Reps can (*)(*)(*)(*) the Dems with their answer...TRUMP!
Journalism has been dead since Hearst invented yellow journalism and made it mainstream. This is nothing new. Hearst did it to ensure pot was illegal and other political goals were met.
This has been rumored (along with the alcohol industry didn't want competition) many times. I believe it had more to do with Harry Anslinger and his attempt to grab power for his newly formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics than. Having visited Hearst's San Simeon mansion, I suspect he was more motivated by making a buck than any of today's esoteric social issues. PS: here is a link (Huffington Post - but you will find the same information many other places) to an article about the prohibition of marijuana. It had more to do with corrupt power and racism than most people realize. - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-influence/real-reasons-marijuana-is-banned_b_9210248.html
So what about all the fake news the democrats were pumping out? Why is it just conservatives? And I noticed your link is to a fake news site. Kinda pathetic.
That's nothing compared to NBC simply giving Chelsea Clinton millions of dollars to do next to nothing at all. Almost $27,000 for every minute she was on the air with her infrequent puff pieces.
The money has to come from somewhere else in the budget. In this case, it came from actual reporter salaries.
