Not content to oppose Robert Bork's nomination, Senator Kennedy, Senator Biden and the other Democrats on the Judiciary Committee set out to DESTROY the man and his reputation.

Thus began the modern era of "take no prisoners" politics.

People wonder how our nation became so divided and here is the moment.

And that most wicked of Supreme Court decisions, Roe v. Wade inspired Kennedy's wicked words.

Because the Democrats rightfully feared that if Bork was nominated to the Supreme Court, Roe v. Wade might be overturned.

And that decision is what really is setting our nation against each other, making us hate each other in a way we have not seen since the days before the Civil War.

To defend the legal killing of babies, the Democrats destroyed a great man.

Shame on the Democrats. Shame on them, if they could feel any shame.

But the party of slavery, Jim Crow, Tammany Hall corruption and abortion feels no shame, not now, not ever.

    I remember the Bork hearings.

Bork's main problem with Roe v. Wade was on the basis of sloppy legal thinking.

Kennedy and Biden had to defend Roe at all costs. Roe is case law that has no chance of ever being backed up by a Constitutional amendment. Weak case law (like Plessy v. Ferguson) gets overturned. If it were overturned the status quo ante - each state has its own abortion laws - would be restored.

But the OP's big point (Bork was the post ACW beginning of politics of personal attack) is entirely correct. So when the Imopeached One was personally attacked it was merely the case of a party that sowed the wind reaping the whirlwind.

I remember how the democrats made such an issue out of Bork's Beard....like it was un-american or something.

Unfortunately he went to ridiculous extremes trying to explain how he decided to grow a beard.....he tried to be too nice...he should have understood he had no chance of getting confirmed and used the opportunity to expose the liberal b.s.
