Leader of online group where leak documents were posted is a 21-year-old Air National Guardsman

I hope they throw the book on him too! An example must be made of him to serve as a deterrent to others?!! I bet he is a Trump supporter too?!!

A 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guardsman has been identified by The New York Times as the leader of an online gaming chat group where a trove of classified documents was posted. The Times reported Thursday that investigators want to talk to the service member and believe he has information relevant to the FBI’s ongoing investigation into the leak.

CNN has not independently verified the identity of the chat leader or the FBI’s interest in talking with him.

The FBI has narrowed the number of people who they believe could be responsible for the leaks and have been conducting interviews in recent days, two people briefed on the matter said. While there’s a large number of people who had access to the documents, investigators have been able to home in on a small number for closer scrutiny thanks to the forensic trail left by the person who posted the documents. Investigators are working on building a case for prosecution, people familiar with the matter say.

The FBI believes they are close to identifying the person behind the leak. Another source familiar with the criminal investigation said that they expect it will move along much more quickly than the Pentagon’s damage assessment.

Earlier Thursday, President Joe Biden appeared to suggest that the US government was close to identifying the leaker.

“There’s a full-blown investigation going on, as you know,” Biden said when asked for comment about the leaks. “The intelligence community and the Justice Department. And they’re getting close. I don’t have an answer for you.”

Biden was speaking in Dublin, where he is meeting the Irish president. It was the first time he commented on the leak.

CNN has previously reported that the Army Criminal Investigation Division is also “assisting the DoD in their investigation” of the leak, Jeffrey Castro, a spokesman for the division, told CNN.

On Wednesday, the Washington Post reported that the person behind the leak worked on a military base and posted sensitive national security secrets in an online group of acquaintances.

How does a mere 21 year old kid get access to secret stuff? He couldn’t possibly have the experience and knowledge to know what he’s looking at.

 

If it is proven that the 21-year-old did do this, a few things will happen. They will be dishonorably discharged using the UCMJ. Although he has stated he did not do this for political reasons, I do think he did for political reasons but does not want to say, trying to minimize his involvement. Or he was acting all bravado on the internet and posting it stupidly. Either way, legally, he is in serious trouble, legally, and I would recommend he obtain a really good defense lawyer and kiss whatever VA benefits goodbye.

He has access to a government computer and is probably in the AF intelligence unit in some capacity.

 

This seems to come up a lot, but it's not that unusual. There are a LOT of 19, 20, and 21 year olds who have access to Top Secret and above information, as a nature of their job in the military. I've worked with lots of just-out-of-high school kids who had access to very sensitive intelligence information.

I would say it's unusual though that even for an age group known for it's irresponsibility to actually be this irresponsible. There aren't many cases.

Yes, even a Guard or Reservist in that position would have that kind of clearance. But in this case they keep saying he was working the night shift, so more likely he's either active duty working at a Guard facility, or part of the Active Guard or Reserve system, which technically means you are in the Guard or Reserve but are active duty in support of their missions and operations, or this guy was working a training or some other kind of tour.

In any case it's not unusual at all.

People join the military for many different reasons, the least of which is who is in the WH. The military has been suffering recruitment deficincies even during the Trump Administration. So this thesis is purely false.

This guy probably cam in at the end of 2020, did basic at Lackland, probably scored high on this test or chose computers, got the bonus the AF was offering, received training for 6 months, and was assigned. Airman first class is the third enlisted rank of the AF, which means he has a minimum of 2 years and under 4 years in his belt. It is also where this is the first step of enlisted leadership training as they are assigned more and more responsibility.

 

This has nothing to do with woke here.

 

BTW, this link shows that the airman joined the military in 2019, which would be in Trump Administration time, and is in the Air National Guard.
