Leaked Documents Outline DHS’s Plans to Police Disinformation (theintercept.com)

This is probably the most important story of the year, maybe the last several years. The government has been colluding with social media companies to censor speech (of American citizens, in clear violation of the First Amendment) that they don't like. This is so egregious it even managed to break through the dense shell of ACLU's overt partisanship (and they're getting roasted on Twitter now about it): ACLU on Twitter: "The First Amendment bars the government from deciding for us what is true or false, online or anywhere. Our government can’t use private pressure to get around our constitutional rights. https://t.co/XCAzhoolBq" / Twitter

Yeap read something on this last week. It's hard to believe the Department of Homeland Security has taken this to the extreme. We heard the Whitehouse spokesman talk about meeting with Social Media to discuss what the facts were, then we heard Facebook boy discuss the left got with them on the Hunter laptop story.

It's a scary thing for the country to go down this road. America was built on distrust of government as it should be, we are the home of the free and the people are our government. It's truly a shame as far as the media has gone to suppress speech, knowledge and facts. Your truth may not be mine, but I support your right to speak it and the media to report it, not suppress it.

    1. Ya got a signup wall there...
    2. I applaud efforts to identify and label (not censor) disinformation for the dummies out there.... I can figure it out for myself, but many obviously need help. Anybody who believes the Big Disinformation (Lie) for example...
    3. This isn't in the top 30 of the most important stories of the year.

    Good luck DHS...

A prime example of how easily people are manipulated and actually want government to control our lives. Crazy that there are people out there like this.

The left loves their dictators and totalitarians. Think about the people/countries they admire: Cuba, China, Venezuela, several middle eastern and African countries, and until recently, Russia. Now think of the countries and leaders the left emulates and then repeat the same list.

The government is the biggest purveyor of lies and disinformation of all time and they truly hate competition.

Basically if you tell too much of the truth about them they'll get your ass one way or the other

DHS is not stopping at just "identify and label", they're censoring, via their allies in various social media companies. That's the (biggest) problem. Beyond even that though, the ACLU is right (for once):

ACLU on Twitter: "The First Amendment bars the government from deciding for us what is true or false, online or anywhere. Our government can’t use private pressure to get around our constitutional rights. https://t.co/XCAzhoolBq" / Twitter

Yeah... I highly doubt that, but I would oppose it if that were true...

I suspect they'll have some plan like Twitter has (or had anyway, pre Prima Donna takeover).... Identify the post as disinformation, post a link to some sort of fact check/debunk, but you can click a link to read it anyway.... I hear T**** was getting hammered with those daily before they just decided to cut him off for violation count..

So, when the "progressive" left crawls into bed with the billionaires and bureaucrats is it fair to call them "Fascists" "Nazis", or are they just common right wing loons? ;-)

“As noted, the Bolshevik overtones are apparent throughout. The systems have crucial differences, but also striking similarities. Lippmann's "specialized class" and Bernays' "intelligent minority," which are to manage the public and their affairs according to liberal democratic theory, correspond to the Leninist vanguard of revolutionary intellectuals. The "manufacture of consent" advocated by Lippmann, Bernays, Niebuhr, Lasswell and others is the Agitprop of their Leninist counterparts. Following a script outlined by Bakunin over a century ago, the secular priesthood in both of the major systems of hierarchy and coercion regard the masses as stupid and incompetent, a bewildered herd who must be driven to a better world -- one that we, the intelligent minority, will construct for them, either taking state power ourselves in the Leninist model, or serving the owners and managers of the ***state capitalist systems*** if it is impossible to exploit popular revolution to capture the commanding heights.
Noam Chomsky, “Deterring Democracy,” (New York, 1991) p 371.

I wonder where I've heard and seen where governments, under the scope of "security", shape the dialog that can be discussed in open forums. Where a government can deem information as "disinformation" and silence dialog that they find as "dangerous" to the Democracy... Yeah.. Only places that support authoritarians regimes.

BTW, then a far left new source such as The Intercept is calling out this behavior out, then you have to really scratch your head. I wonder how long the Media will start attacking The Intercept as a Right Wing conspiracy site? Any bets?

It IS true, try familiarizing yourself with some of the reporting that's been done on the subject. Here's just one example:

I see our liberal friends are avoiding this thread like Biden is avoiding the public. I wonder if it's merely because they agree with the actions of the federal government or that maybe... just maybe, they also might find this as a major overreach of our federal government?

    LMAO!!!

So says the group that thinks the 2020 election was stolen, Obama was a Muslim, and wow can I go on from there, but that reality would prompt a complaint about my post. :)

They’ll agree with as long as it’s their side doing it. It’s the same thing with their riots and violence; as long it’s their side who is rioting, looting, burning and murdering they go along with it. But two conservatives on a street corner need to be shut down, condemned and sent to prison.

No, no, no, you got it wrong. The 2016 election was stolen, the 2020 election had fraudulent votes.

What’s wrong with being a Muslim? The left makes it sound like saying Obama is a Muslim, which he most likely is, is some sort of insult.

No it's not. This is really not a story, just a opinion piece mislabeled as a story.

Remember, the GOP in 2018 passed the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Act of 2018 with President Trump signing that into law. Part of that bill was to create an agency within the DHS framework to monitor and assist both government and private sector industries in cybersecurity. Part of cybersecurity is disinformation of certain topics. The Disinformation Governance Board, which is allowed by the act to grant power to DHS secretary to create such a board, makes recommendations to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency for recommendations. In addition, the Patriot Act, also passed by the GOP and signed by then President Bush, gives the US government almost unequal access without any warrant on electronic data if subpoenaed by the CISA. Furthermore, in 2020, this agency created a website called "Rumor Control" which disseminates misinformation and provides actual facts. It did this will all the conspiracy theories on Covid and eventually the election. It is why President Trump fired its first director because he said the 2020 election was the most secure.

The emails, memos, etc are discussions within that governing board on how to disseminate the misinformation out there from the conspiracy election fraud claims to conspiracy theory covid claims, etc. So, what's the beef? The governance board has no real power. It can only recommend to an agency that was created by Republicans to begin with. And you are complaining it now?
