As we all know, mass shootings are events that cause a lot of debate and discussion about various issues in society. The thing I feel is important to point out is that we should already be discussing those issues. Right after a mass shooting is neither a better time nor a worse time than any other to discuss these issues, because they should always be discussed.

So, I'll leave gun control for now. Other people can debate that.

Instead, I'll focus on the thing that's brought up constantly when these events occur; mental illness.

Every politician and their dog climb over each other to blame mental illness, and I think there is merit to that accusation; mental illness and the lack of proper psychiatric care is a big fat problem.

But what are we as a society supposed to do about it?

I'll present a few suggestions to get us started:

    1. Create a full-sized national psychiatric authority, that funds and controls all psychiatric care facilities in the entire US. All care will be provided free of charge to citizens, and chargemasters will not be a factor.

The government would, naturally, not actually be paying the ridiculous prices that people think of when discussing health care, because the government would be providing the care at cost, not at the imaginary chargemaster rates that hospitals pull out of their arses when cutting deals with insurances companies.

    2. Create a federal mandate forcing all states to provide free psychiatric care to all citizens, but where everything is paid for and run by the states themselves.

    3. Create a federal healthcare company providing free psychiatric care to all citizens, but funded by the federal government, and cutting out insurances schemes altogether.

Frankly, the second and third were pretty silly, but I had already written "a few", so I had to make up two besides the one I actually put thought into.

How does that sound? After all, mental health issues are a biggie, and the people suffering from them need help. This isn't just an individual problem, it's something affecting all of society.

Most mentally ill people don't volunteer for treatment.

Less government, not more, is the answer. We didn't have a mental health crisis until the mental health/social work branch of the gov-edu-union-contractor-grantee-trial lawyer-MSM Complex grew to outsized proportions. We didn't have a mental health crisis until the rot of identity politics created whole faux victim classes where none existed before. We didn't have a mental health crisis until feminism, the destruction of marriage/family unit, and the resulting proliferation of SSRIs and other psychoactive drugs. We didn't have a mental health crisis before the advent of the welfare state and its destruction of personal accountability for one's actions. We didn't have a mental health crisis when corporal punishment at school and at home weren't jailable offenses.

When I was a HS student, at any given time there were 100+ guns in student cars in the parking lot due to students who hunted and target practiced after school with friends. There was never a shooting, nor even a gun accident, because students knew the consequences of "playing with guns" as opposed to respecting them and one's fellow students, an ass-whooping at the school, and then a bigger ass-whooping/grounding at home.

Socialized voodoo science is not the answer. That sort of lunacy would ignore due process and gives far too much power to the subjective will of witch doctors parading around as actual doctors. We need to move away from this 'mental' health idea, and move towards something that would maintain due process. What is necessary is more due diligence, better reporting and follow up of complaints or threats...
