How about compulsory check ups on all gun licence holders, say every year?

What sort of checks? Given the difficulties with the analyse of mental illnesses, its a dicey proposition

The problem is, as anyone who has spent time in criminal court knows, is that psychiatrist and psychologiest find what they're supposed to find. So, who will tell them how they're supposed to find.

Our police department had psychiatrict evaluations of candidates but the problem was the only people it actually flagged as problems were the ones who showed up for their interview with their invisible pet monkey as an advisor. All the others were "maybe".

I want the same "compulsory check ups" on car owners, knive owners, and anyone trained in boxing, martial arts, or MMA.

Aren't car owners already checked by default? They are here (in terms of the knock-on effects of particular illnesses and how a license can be taken away)

Better staffing and more money needed for adequate mental health treatment...

WHO: Treatment for Mental Health Inadequate and Under-funded
October 09, 2011 - The World Health Organization is calling on governments to increase services for people suffering from mental, neurological and substance use disorders. A report released to coincide with World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10, finds countries all over the world spend very little on the treatment of mental illness.

Most mentally ill people are not a danger to themselves or others. That is why our legal system uses that as the definition of who is allowed to be involuntarily committed to a mental hospital.
