Being unemployed for too long reportedly is driving people mad and costing taxpayers billions of dollars in mental illness and other disability claims.

The New York Post reported Sunday that as unemployment checks run out, many jobless are trying to gain government benefits by declaring themselves unhealthy.

More than 10.5 million people -- about 5.3 percent of the population aged 25 and 64 -- received disability checks in January from the federal government, the Post wrote, a 18 percent jump from before the recession.

Among those claiming disability, 43 percent are asking for benefits because of mental illness, the Post wrote. A growing number of those people are older, former white-collar workers.

Disability claims come from the Social Security Trust Fund, which is set to go broke in 2018. Congress last week agreed to dip into the revenue stream to give a 2-percentage point tax break to working Americans.

The Post noted that the more people file for disability claims, the better for the unemployment picture since those people are removed from the jobless rolls.

Cha-ching!! I can see Obamanomics making people sick to their stomachs, but disabled? Come on. This is what the entitlement mentality does to people.

Trust Fox to feed lies and distortions to those that just gotta beleive the country needs to be saved from itself. I'm willing to bet that the majority of righties have no clue about the true state of the social security trust.

"This year’s report by the trustees who oversee the fund found that, if left alone, the Social Security system will continue to be able to pay its bills for at least the next 40 years — thanks in part to a $1.4 trillion nest egg of Treasury securities that has been stashed away over the past several decades. (A separate analysis by the Congressional Budget Office figures the fund is in good shape until 2052.)"

"....an 18% jump from before the recession"

It appears millions of malingering frauds are doing their level best to NOT leave it alone.

    ...And then what?
What are you saying? It's okay in Obama-land to be a grifter and a parasite
because someone else will pay your way? What happens when that "nest egg" gets sucked dry because the the productive class was undermined by a growing pack of parasites?

You have no answers. Only attempted defense of the indefensible.

Between this and just plain dropping out of the workforce the unemployment rate should be about 4% by the time the election rolls around.

We're just going to have to face facts that the average American worker hates his job, hates his life, is miserable and doesn't want to work.

Most people hate working and any possible way to avoid working they will engage in. Only a few individuals were raised to be productive human beings, which is a hard thing because it often requires stern, authoritarian parenting to instill discipline in an unruly child and teach them the important aspects of society such as the value of hard work.

The average American worker is a fat lazy bastard looking for anyway he can to avoid getting up and going to work in the morning.

I plan on working until the day I die or becomes absolutely to crippled to work and most Americans, if they were proper Americans raised in the right way, would do the same.

    1) That report was presented in 2004. Obviously a lot has changed [economically] for the worst since then.
    2) The solvency issues they spoke of were a sly way of saying it, along with the other entitlements, will consume all revenues by 2052.

Exactly. Jobless claims are down and unemployment dropped to 8.3% last month because millions of jobless ran out on their UI benefits and filed for disability. Geez, libs! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. :disbelief:

I think the GOP should take this, Double-Down and Run with it like crazy.

Maybe Newt could have a summit on how to turn Welfare, Unemployment and Disability Checks into Pay-Checks. Also ... those Hooooo's taking Government Birth Control Pill are costing us Jobs.

    This is great ... :D

    God I can't wait until November. :D

The story was sourced from the New York Post. If you want to accuse them of feeding lies, go ahead, but as others have stated, your report is out of date.

Means tested welfare is more expensive than unemployment compensation that is mostly self funded.

Actually, these events are antithetical to the entitlement mentality. While I don't necessarily agree that being jobless makes one disabled via mental health problems, it certainly takes a toll on people. People would rather work and provide something of value than get handouts, otherwise they wouldn't be distressed by their condition.

I am very hesitant to claim that throwing more money at them is the solution to the problem, but these people are suffering due to lack of employment. They are not living on easy street with an entitlement mentality.

I hope no one finds themselves out of a good job with little to no employment opportunities on the horizon. It is very distressful and will take a toll on almost anyone.

You may be confusing alleged conservatism with liberalism.

That would be, quite possibly, the greatest thing that has ever happened to America.

Some people unfortunately believe that chronic poverty rates among the elderly are a good thing.

Elderly poverty in the U.S. decreased dramatically during the twentieth century. Between 1960 and 1995, the official poverty rate of those aged 65 and above fell from 35 percent to 10 percent, and research has documented similarly steep declines dating back to at least 1939. While poverty was once far more prevalent among the elderly than among other age groups, today's elderly have a poverty rate similar to that of working-age adults and much lower than that of children.
