That's the average cost for a house here in Jackson. We have many that go for 5 to 10 million and up.

Only on this forum could a thread about a visit to the U.S. disintegrate into an insult fest about tipping.

Since when is it my fault that someone is working for minimum wage? I work at minimum wage too, should I ask the customers to hand me some of their own money because I don't earn enough?

I believe that instead of the Golden Arches, it has green ones instead? Jess said that they want everything to blend in and not look out of place...there are four colors you can choose from to paint your house or something????

where do you think the money to pay employees comes from? you can either have higher prices and indifferent service or tip your server. if you want to pay the gratuity not included price and not tip, i wouldn't recommend ever going back there. waitstaff has a long memory for people who break their rice bowl.

We have higher prices and employees who go home with a decent pay check. We can afford to pay our bills. We only need to work 40 hours a week to take care of our families. How many hours does the average American on minimum wage have to work in order to pay the bills?

What is more important? Cheap food and badly paid employees, or well paid employees and more expensive food? If you ask me, the extra expense is worth it! I would never work for $5 an hour like some do in the US. I would rather live on welfare than work my arse off for a pitiless amount of money.

waitresses in Michigan only make $2 and some change and hour in wages, but if they are any good at it can make up wards of $300 a night waiting tables. do you think they'd still make that if if your $10 diner cost $15?

If my dinner cost more, they should be earning at least $550 a week for a 38 hour week. That should be what a waitress here would get, full time - at the minimum.

If they want to beg for money, that is up for them, but I have a right to refuse to hand over my hard earned cash to pay someone who got stuck with a (*)(*)(*)(*)ty boss.

they didn't get stuck with a (*)(*)(*)(*)ty boss, they got stuck with a cheapskate customer. you're paying her wages either way. bosses don't just pick money off the tree in back.

i imagine food service in Oz suffers greatly if the best they're going to get is minimum wage. minimum wage breeds minimum effort.

The food over here is fine, thank you very much. And yes, the boss is stingy if they refuse to pay them a decent wage. I am not an employer, so I am in no way responsible for the wages of another, no matter what you say. Raise the food prices and pay the employes what they deserve.

i'm sure the food is fine, it's the service that sucks. :nana:

where do you think the boss gets the money to pay his/her employees? there is no other source than the customer.

not gonna happen-it would be cost prohibitive. an employee is the states costs twice what they're paid with all taxes included. it's cheaper to leave 20% than to have a $10 meal cost $15. 12 is still less than 15, right?

If that is the case, then something needs to change over there, so the boss can make a decent profit, and pay his employees what they are entitled to.

Don't be an ugly Australian. You don't understand how our system works, and you condemn it. When I was in Australia, there were plenty of stuff I didn't agree with- but I didn't think as an American, I should be lecturing Australians on how things should be done in there country.

Tipping is part of both the social and legal custom in the U.S. When it works well, the customers get better service and the wait staff make fabulous money. When it works poorly, the wait staff doesn't make enough.

My wife waitressed for quite a few years- she loved doing it. She got to be funny and engaging, and she made really good money- better than many of her fellow employees- because she was a (*)(*)(*)(*)ed good waitress. People would return and ask to sit in her section.

Like I said, it is not a perfect system- but when it works- the superior waiter or waitress not only can make good money, but really enjoy their jobs.

If you come to America, don't be the typical foreign tourists that waiters hate. Lean the local customs and tip appropriately. It is just the correct thing to do.

I've worked restaurants in California for 35 years and waiters and waitresses made twice as much as the cooks because of tips..it's the nature of the business..I rather slave in the kitchen then deal with a bunch of (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) customers..
it's a hard job and they deserve every penny..even if their service sucks just go ahead and pay the 20% and don't go back unless the food is outstanding..

Let me ask you a question Mak. If I were to come to your country, wouldn't you expect me to honor your customs and way of life.

Of course she would because obviously a society founded by criminals and deviants knows better than anyone else.

For the love of Pete, the woman just asked a simple question about tipping, and now some of you spazes are trying to the most horrible person in the world.

    Get a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing grip.

I don't understand why the cost of workers should be burden on American customers either. Shouldn't it be the concern of the owners or bosses entirely?

This is obviously a sneaky way of business owners or corperate to take advantage of American consumers, and no Amercians even notice??????

But it costs extra money. I've never been to a country that require me to pay to honor their way of life.

My understanding is that a person pays a cover charge in many European restaurants--and is served pricier food. Yet I imagine that many Americans abroad still tip.

    What is cover charge?

You may be right. The cost of workers in Europe is hidden and add in the cost of the pricier food...I guess all capitalists are like that...all cheats.

It is very silly of Americans to tip outside of America, PLEASE STOP, we don't want this culture and way of life to spread everywhere. The capitalists have Americans consumers to rip is enough.

And as a consumer or customer, I never want to tip, never want to pay more than necessary, you are giving pressure to other country's consumers as well. This is not fair. Stop it.
