I can understand why they did it. It's just a testament to how ultra-sensitive people have become.

That said, I do not agree with their decision. There is nothing inherently wrong with the Confederate flag. It's the Cross of St. Andrew and was the battle standard of Confederate soldiers, the vast majority of whom were not slave owners.

Dunno. Don't care. Plenty of a lot more pressing matters to deal with than some goofball entertainment at a "sporting" event.

Unfortunately the cross of saint Andrew has been permanently tainted by a bunch of childish treasonous traitors. Kind of like how many Indian cultures had the swastika (a holy symbol in many religions) ruined by the nazi's...

One of the best posts I have seen in a long time.

There are many people who would love to re-write that red-neck history in the manner they think promotes their cause.

    ?

not at all. Although the highlander tradition of burning a cross to claim a piece of land (a practice that predates Christianity in Europe) was also tainted by the south. (KKK)

    "The South" =/= KKK

I shouldn't have to tell you that; you should already know.

The US flag was flown over the conquered lands of the native Americans. I guess that means the Stars and Stripes have been tainted by imperialism and genocide.

It's an absurd comparison. The Confederate Flag was the common southern man's battle standard in the Civil War, and the common southern man was not a slave owner.

Sure, the confederate flag stands for what then?

Oh, to the people who still call it the "war of Northern Aggression" it might stand for "the confederacy" without the slavery bit.. (talk about revisionist history)

    Reminds me of a joke.

A visitor to a small Georgia town was walking down the street and he saw a german shepard dog viciously attack a little girl. He ran over, fought the dog with his bare hands and finally ended up having to break the dogs neck to keep it from killing the girl.

A newspaper reporter down the road runs over and says, that was very heroic. I will write a headline that says "Local man saves girl from vicious dog".

The visitor says, "Well I am not a local man, I am just visiting"

The newspsper man says, "OK, I will write a headline that says Georgia man saves girl from vicious dog"

The visitor says, "well I'm actually from Connecticut"

The newspaper man then says "OK, the headline is Yankee kills family pet" and walks away.

The Southern heritage is nothing but shame and defeat.

It was totally brought on by Southerners themselves.

They fought to protect slavery though.
The men giving the orders sure are hell were slave owners.

Also many of the common southerns sourly resented the fact if you owed 20+ slaves you didn't have to join up.

Wow. I find the representation of the confederate flag as a racism symbol more racist then most of the racism the select few haters that fly it spew out. There are many of us who respect that flag for it's heritage and historical meaning that do not hate. Nascar isn't anything to worry about anyways, who really enjoys watching cars turn left 200 times (200 laps rather - if we wanted to be technical they turn left 800 times)....really America?

You've missed one giant fact. The Northerners had slaves as well...and they certainly didn't want the status quo changed. The Civil War was about state rights, ending slavery was a gimme at the end, it wasn't fought for though.

Yeah, it was over state rights (slavery being one of them). But it was the south who wanted to keep slavery the most. The 30 years prior to the war had basally been one constant political battle over it. when the numerous compromises collapsed the southerns threw a hissy fit and started to act like total (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s (like when a southern senator actually attacked and nearly killed a northern senator on the house floor, then they southerns treated the attacker like a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing hero and gave him a gold cane "to smite abolitionist Yankees" with...)

then of course they started the war with Sumter...

No...they didn't fight to protect slavery. This is clear from Lincoln's own words. If the South had wanted to preserve slavery, all it had to do was stay in the Union.

Secession was really over tariffs. The slavery issue was used by the South to rile up the folks to support secession.

Read the articles of secession. The south's motives are pretty clear. All of those states left the union because they feared that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery.

No, not to own. Ownership between the North and the South was mutual. You all need to research and fast. :frustrated:

"Shame and defeat" aren't revisionist... they actually did lose. Negationism doesn't apply.

I wonder how much being in Arizona played in their decision not to have the "General Lee" in the parade?

After all the uproar over Arizona's recent immigration law, I think NASCAR might have decided not to stir the pot and remain as non-controversial as possible.
