I thought we were past this but I guess with Trump out, the neo cons are back in.

‘Open door to NATO’ for Georgia, Ukraine as Pentagon chief Austin visits eastern Europe

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will stress this week that there is an “open door to NATO” for Ukraine and Georgia, the two nations on the front lines of Russian aggression, Pentagon officials said over the weekend.

Mr. Austin will visit those two countries and Romania in the coming days before traveling to Brussels for a meeting of NATO defense ministers. Pentagon officials cast the trip as a clear signal to Moscow that the U.S. and its NATO allies stand firmly behind Ukrainian and Georgian sovereignty in the face of Russian provocations and military expansion over the past decade.

Against that backdrop, defense officials said Mr. Austin will tell Ukrainian and Georgian leaders that there is an open door to NATO membership and that each country should take steps to qualify for membership.

Neither Georgia nor Ukraine is a member of the 30-nation alliance. Fully integrating either nation into NATO would spark fierce resistance from Russia, which has long opposed NATO expansion toward its borders.

Ugh, enough already. There is no advantage for us to try to recruit Georgia and Ukraine for NATO. The alliance is cracking up right now, slowly but surely. If anything, we need to kick out some members...I'm looking at you Turkey!

Agree - 100% - Nato and the wars of the past are no longer as if there is some ww3 comming.. and as if we had the standing of World Police that we once did.. and worse .. as if engaging in nation building had some kind of return on investment .. like it once did .. back in the glory days when we were the only game in town.

1.2 Trillion a year is way more than we need to be spending -- need to look after our own interests .. Russia's spat with Ukraine Georgia is more of an EU issue .. is in their back yard .. and the Brits - they have as much detterrent ability as we do - they want to nuke each other into obvlivion over Russian Strategic interests .. have at it.

we are in terminator land now .. automated robots can fly here from china - as demonstrated today .. hypersonic glide vehicles - but never mind .. these robots can be launched from ships close to the target nations shore .. Turkey already used some in Libya for military purposes.. every nation is working furiously on this technology .. being develped at a mind bending pace .. by friend and foe.

The economic war is the war to focus on .. the real war - let us not be distracted by these money wasting military adventures to the tune of some 10 Trillion over the last two decades. 500 Billion a year over 20 years would have gone a long way - infrastructure, technology, ramping up our economy to compete in the 3rd millennium. .. rather than spenging the last 2 decades in hopless military adventures - outsourcing our manufacturing base to Asia ..

Lil Mike, I believe it was the Satanist Saul Lewinsky who said whatever you do, accuse the others of doing it so as to confuse people. Well our Defense Secretary knows Saul well. He's calling Russia aggressive towards 2 nations who were aligned with Russia for over a millennium through their Orthodox faith. So who is the aggressor here and who is over stepping their bounds? Is it Russia or Nato?

My suggestion: Before the world blows up in a war, and Russia feels an obligation to support the people in Georgia and Ukraine, that our esteemed Defense Secretary would start asking the people what they want, and not their corrupt and usually hated governments.
