This is a big deal. When you have government actively influencing what speech they deem proper to all major social platforms and them pushing their weight at private owned business, you most definitely do not have free speech and you are actively stopping the discussion at best or actively tilting the scales of conversation at the least. Either way it is not free speech. I hope he wins this fight

This has been a major issue for longer than COVID.
Liberals in particular are quick to try and stifle any speech they find not part of their agenda.
Trying to keep Trump off the ballot is just then next chapter for them in terms of making the world in their image.

there is a major free speech case brought by the NRA and backed by the ACLU as well. in that case, leftists tried to get banks to not do business with the NRA https://www.aclu.org/press-releases...o-uphold-advocacy-groups-right-to-free-speech

many lefties are as hateful of the first amendment as they are the second

banning is not really at play-any more than saying schools ban alcohol or guns at school. These "bans" mean that tax dollars don't supply them to juveniles at a school. Adults are still free to buy the books and let their kids read them

Why don't you just condemn all of it instead of trying to turn censorship into a partisan issue?

Stockton knows "the truth"? When misinformation costs lives, there's a moral duty to shut it down. I'm quite happy for the scales to fall away from the madness of these dangerous conspiracy theories.

"So if the doctors can't speak… these brilliant people that we have in our culture, can't speak when they know truths, their truths, and now we're deprived of that opportunity to hear… the… wisdom they have to share, I think that's a big deal," he continued."

False claim. They speak on sites such as "Rumble". We get to hear their "truth" and it usually sucks. So often these low-flying medical professionals have little side lines or connections to alternative medicine scams. The vast bulk of the medical profession speaks all the time, why doesn't Stockton listen to them? Are his ex-team mates all dropping from the vaccines?

YouTube removed half a million COVID-19 misinformation videos (usatoday.com)
"YouTube has removed more than 500,000 videos spreading misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic since February, according to a letter by YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki.

YouTube's policies prohibit misinformation about the coronavirus, including claims the virus is a hoax or promoting medically unsubstantiated cures.

"We're always working to strike the right balance between openness and responsibility as we meet the guidelines set by governments around the world," reads the letter by Wojcicki. "Our approach to responsibility is to remove content experts say could lead to real world harm, raise up authoritative and trusted content, reduce views of borderline content, and reward creators who meet our even higher bar for monetization."

Conspiracy theories are shaping people's perceptions of the vaccine, according to a survey by Acxiom of 5,000 U.S. consumers from Nov. 25 to Dec. 4. More than 44% of respondents said there's some truth to the unfounded claim that the death rate from COVID-19 has been deliberately exaggerated, and half of those, 22%, said it is "definitely true.""

    Works both ways though!

YouTube Mistakenly Taking Down Wrong COVID-19 Videos Debunking Misinfo (businessinsider.com)
    • YouTube has cracked down on misinformation during the pandemic, but its automated flagging system has wrongfully removed videos from creators who attempt to debunk that misinformation.
    • One creator had a video debunking COVID-19 conspiracy theories removed, and his appeal was denied. YouTube told Insider that decision was a mistake.
    • "That's a crazy situation to be in, to be afraid to upload videos getting out the correct information," the creator said.
    • Another creator had four videos removed because of mistaken enforcement of YouTube’s new COVID-19 misinformation policy.
    • A YouTube spokesperson said the platform was making more mistakes because of increased reliance on automation.

That’s not banning books. That’s a great catch phrase that isn’t true. You can still go and buy those books personally. Should the government pay for my ammo to shoot? If not then why should the government pay for the books you want to read?

Yeah, sure--we should have outsiders choosing books for kids to read.

Got any other great ideas? I wonder if you think you can control what students learn when you keep the pay so low conservatives seldom try for a teaching job?

And it is Faux News who are still smarting over having to pay out to Dominion. Bottom line - there has to be a limit to lies. This is not just about COVID (and boy were there some whack jobs spreading misinformation). This is aboiput the broader issue of medical advice. Have you not heard the ads for “stuck poop” “weight loss” diabetes” and “eyesight” that all tout a “simple 10 second trick” that “medical experts have been trying to hide” because “they” “do not want you to know about because it will cost “the” money”. This really pings me off because I am an Aussie and we changed our laws so big Pharma cannot even advertise Tylenol here but YouTube can push dangerous rubbish that puts peoples health at risk.

These same charlatans that were selling horse dewormer as a “cure” for Covid have now moved on and are spruiking everything from “stuck poop” to foot patches that purportedly “remove toxins”.

The patches I do not care about - a fool and his money are soon parted but the more serious health issues concern me - a lot. Some of the worst are warning people about “the dangers of metformin” because “diabetes can be cured “by a simple 10 second trick”

competition--those who go into primary and secondary education are generally the lowest scoring students in a college class. Yale didn't even have that major-they assumed if you were going into teaching it would be at a doctoral level with a PHD in a really subject like Math or Physics, not some cheesedick educational masters nonsense. The school board should choose the books and I dont' see a need for my tax dollars to fund crap like "Heather has two mommies" or David's daddy wears a dress

When people don't know anything, they look around for what sounds okay.

TV news--old folks' fare--is filled with ads about death, disease, drugs, miracle cures, sad, lonely, seniors. Canadian news has almost none of that.

The books are not banned. They are not permitted to be available or to be used as part of any curriculum in public K - 12 schools. Access to the books by kids is by parents although that is far from a fool proof method.

Don’t care how you try and justify this - it is still a STUPID idea. True learning comes from having an open mind that sees all sides

There is a moral and ethical duty to allow access to the full spectrum of information and opinion so that individuals can make up their own minds about important issues. That has always been the case. Those who advocate censorship are acting to deprive individuals of information which could inform their decisions and could result in negative outcomes in their lives.

It's an absolutely essential idea. Parents should be making decisions on what their immature developing children are exposed to. When kids graduate from high school there is open access to all forms of information and content.

agree, even if he was wrong, should be able to speak

we let Trump speak, and he was wrong all the time....

But, if there is a mask mandate during a pandemic in which a national emergency was issued by Trump, one needs to honor that too, or not go there

Yes. Free speech is required and necessary for the success of democratic governance which is dependent on an informed voter population.
