Cockroaches Could Lead to New Antibiotics
January 08, 2013 : Most people might see cockroaches as good-for-nothing pests, but this germ-ridden insect could be an indirect source of new antibiotics for humans.

Cockroaches host the larvae of a parasitic type of wasp, which spend their formative days eating the bacteria-laden body of the cockroach from the inside out. Researchers have discovered the wasp larva secretes chemicals that sanitize the decidedly unsanitary guts of the cockroach. These germ-killing chemicals could eventually be developed for human uses.

For the developing larvae, “the cockroach is the only food source and the cradle,” says biologist Gudrun Herzner at the University of Regensburg in Germany. It’s a cradle that needs a good cleaning, because cockroaches spend time in some very unsanitary places, from trash heaps to public toilets, where you’ll find a cornucopia of bacteria, fungi and viruses that can make you, and the emerald wasp larva, sick. While the young wasp’s hygiene challenges may seem extreme, Herzner says they are basically the same problems we all face. “The larva has to protect, first, its food from degradation by microbes, and then it has to protect itself from foodborne illnesses that these microbes might cause.”

The female emerald cockroach wasp leads her prey by the antenna after stinging it to render it docile. The egg she lays on the roach will hatch, burrow inside, and feed on the roach as the wasp larva develops.

As the wasp larva munches its way through the microbe-laden body of the cockroach, it produces generous amounts of a clear liquid. Herzner and her colleagues found this liquid to contain a blend of antimicrobial substances, according to their study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "The larvae seem to disperse this secretion thoroughly inside the cockroach, and in this way sanitize their cockroach hosts,” Herzner says. One of the chemicals fights the germs that cause tuberculosis; another has a broad range of activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses such as hepatitis C. Herzner says it is the first time researchers have found insects using this chemical against microbes.

But it’s probably not the last insect antimicrobial discovery. Most antibiotics that doctors use have been discovered among microbes living in the soil, but if researchers turn to the insect world, microbiologist Julian Davies, at the University of British Columbia, says, “You can have a potentially new source of antibiotics. People have been looking at this. Nothing’s come out of it yet, but they’re certainly looking at it.”

Antimicrobials have been discovered everywhere from frog skin to panda blood, but none of them have made it to the medicine cabinet yet. Davies says it can be hard to isolate useful quantities of the active chemicals in these sources, and they may be difficult chemicals to produce in the lab. Plus, Davies says, “It’s fine to find an antibiotic, but half of them are toxic.” Scientists are working to overcome these hurdles.

With drug resistant bacteria a growing public health threat worldwide, a type of frog Russians have used to keep milk fresh could provide a fresh source of germ fighters. Moscow State University chemist Albert Lebedev grew up in a rural part of Russia, where many people kept their own cows. In the days before refrigeration, it was a challenge to keep milk from spoiling. So people enlisted the help of the local amphibians. “[For] small portions of milk to drink, they used to put [a] frog inside," he says. "A small frog over there could prevent the milk from being spoiled.” It turns out that putting a frog in your milk is not as crazy as it might sound.

Frog surgery

To explain, let’s go back about 25 years, to another surprising discovery about amphibians. The eggs of African horned frogs are a popular tool for scientists studying the innermost workings of cells. In the late 1980s, Michael Zasloff was surgically removing frog ovaries for his research at the National Institutes of Health. Zasloff noticed that when he put the frogs back in their slimy aquarium homes, without the benefit of antibiotics, “The frogs healed after surgery without exhibiting any signs of infection or inflammation.” Zasloff and his colleagues discovered that’s because the skin of the African horned frog produces unique anti-microbial compounds.

Potent cocktails

Then they discovered that other species of frog also produce potent cocktails of antibiotics. “What is amazing is that no two frogs have the same cocktail," he says. "They’re all different, and all beautifully tuned to deal with the microbes that these animals face.” And for frogs, dealing with microbes on their skin is a matter of life and death. They breathe and drink through their skin, and spend much of their time in waters teeming with microbes. Moscow State University’s Albert Lebedev says the more scientists looked, the more kinds of chemicals they found coming out of the skins of amphibians. “They can be antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial, antitumor, neuropeptides, analgesics," and so on," he says. "So, a lot of various functions.”

Antibiotic-resistant diseases pose apocalyptic threat, top expert says
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - Britains most senior medical adviser has warned MPs that the rise in drug-resistant diseases could trigger a national emergency comparable to a catastrophic terrorist attack, pandemic flu or major coastal flooding.

Dame Sally Davies, the chief medical officer, said the threat from infections that are resistant to frontline antibiotics was so serious that the issue should be added to the governments national risk register of civil emergencies. She described what she called an apocalyptic scenario where people going for simple operations in 20 years time die of routine infections because we have run out of antibiotics. The register was established in 2008 to advise the public and businesses on national emergencies that Britain could face in the next five years.

The highest priority risks on the latest register include a deadly flu outbreak, catastrophic terrorist attacks, and major flooding on the scale of 1953, the last occasion on which a national emergency was declared in the UK. Speaking to MPs on the Commons science and technology committee, Davies said she would ask the Cabinet Office to add antibiotic resistance to the national risk register in the light of an annual report on infectious disease she will publish in March. Davies declined to elaborate on the report, but said its publication would coincide with a government strategy to promote more responsible use of antibiotics among doctors and the clinical professions. We need to get our act together in this country, she told the committee.

The issue of drug resistance is as old as antibiotics themselves, and arises when drugs knock out susceptible infections, leaving hardier, resilient strains behind. The survivors then multiply, and over time can become unstoppable with frontline medicines. Some of the best known are so-called hospital superbugs such as MRSA that are at the root of outbreaks among patients. In the past, most people havent worried because weve always had new antibiotics to turn to, said Alan Johnson, consultant clinical scientist at the Health Protection Agency. What has changed is that the development pipeline is running dry. We dont have new antibiotics that we can rely on in the immediate future or in the longer term.

Changes in modern medicine have exacerbated the problem by making patients more susceptible to infections. For example, cancer treatments weaken the immune system, and the use of catheters increases the chances of bugs entering the bloodstream. We are becoming increasingly reliant on antibiotics in a whole range of areas of medicine. If we dont have new antibiotics to deal with the problems of resistance we see, we are going to be in serious trouble, Johnson added.

14 February 2013 - Scientists will test unique chemical compounds from marine samples found in deep sea trenches

Researchers are embarking on an £8m project to discover new antibiotics at the bottom of the ocean. A team, led by scientists at Aberdeen University, is hunting for undiscovered chemicals among life that has evolved in deep sea trenches. Prof Marcel Jaspars said the team hoped to find "the next generation" of infection-fighting drugs.

England's chief medical officer has warned of an "antibiotic apocalypse" with too few new drugs in the pipeline. Few samples have ever been collected from ocean trenches - deep, narrow valleys in the sea floor which can plunge down to almost 6.8 miles (11km). Yet researchers believe there is great potential for discovering antibiotics in these extreme conditions.

Life in these incredibly hostile environments is effectively cut off and has evolved differently in each trench. The international team will use fishing vessels to drop sampling equipment on a reel of cables to the trench bed to collect sediment. Scientists will then attempt to grow unique bacteria and fungi from the sediment that can be extracted and refined to discover new antibiotics.

Starting in the autumn with the Atacama Trench in the eastern Pacific Ocean - about 100 miles (161km) off the coast of Chile and Peru - the EU-funded research will also search deep trenches off New Zealand as well waters off Antarctica. Arctic waters off Norway will also be explored.

14 February 2013 - Everyone knows there are lots of species yet to be discovered in rainforests and remote parts of the world. But hundreds are being discovered every year in Europe too - most of them by amateurs.

"If you want to find something new, you have to go to a place nobody has been before," says Jean-Michel Lemaire. "You have to open your eyes." Lemaire is a retired mathematician from south-east France with a passion for beetles. In the last few years, Lemaire has found seven new species. He has hunted them down by exploring caves and crawling through tunnels dating back to the Middle Ages. It was in one such tunnel in Monaco that he found his most prized discovery - a tiny, blind soil-dwelling beetle.

Lemaire thinks it probably lives nowhere else on earth but the Rock of Monaco. "Finding a new species is like the holy grail," he says. Already about 350,000 beetle species have been identified, making it one of the biggest animal orders on the planet. It is hard work crawling around underground, but, Lemaire points out, beetles are at least easier to catch than some other creatures - butterflies, for example. For centuries, scientists have catalogued the creatures of Europe - the tall and the small, the feathered and the furred. After all, Europe was home to some of the most revered naturalists of all time, including Britain's Charles Darwin and Sweden's Carl Linnaeus, the biologist who popularised the Latin naming system for every species on Earth.

And yet "we only know the tip of the iceberg," says ecologist Benoit Fontaine of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. "There are more species that we don't know than species that we know." In Europe alone, about 700 new species are being discovered each year, says Fontaine. That's about four times the rate of two centuries ago. These species tend to be tiny creatures - often insects, spiders, and worms. And many of the animals would likely have remained undiscovered if not for a dedicated band of naturalists who have set out to find new creatures.

11 March 2013 - A terrible future could be on the horizon, a future which rips one of the greatest tools of medicine out of the hands of doctors.

A simple cut to your finger could leave you fighting for your life. Luck will play a bigger role in your future than any doctor could. The most basic operations - getting an appendix removed or a hip replacement - could become deadly. Cancer treatments and organ transplants could kill you. Childbirth could once again become a deadly moment in a woman's life. It's a future without antibiotics. This might read like the plot of science fiction novel - but there is genuine fear that the world is heading into a post-antibiotic era.

The World Health Organization has warned that "many common infections will no longer have a cure and, once again, could kill unabated". The US Centers of Disease Control has pointed to the emergence of "nightmare bacteria". And the chief medical officer for England Prof Dame Sally Davies has evoked parallels with the "apocalypse". Antibiotics kill bacteria, but the bugs are incredibly wily foes. Once you start treating them with a new drug, they find ways of surviving. New drugs are needed, which they then find ways to survive.

Deadly

As long as new drugs keep coming, resistance is not a problem. But there has not been a new class of antibiotics discovered since the 1980s. This is now a war, and one we are in severe danger of losing. Antibiotics are more widely used than you might think and a world without antibiotics would be far more dangerous. They made deadly infections such as tuberculosis treatable, but their role in healthcare is far wider than that. Surgery that involves cutting open the body poses massive risks of infection. Courses of antibiotics before and after surgery have enabled doctors to perform operations that would have been deadly before. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can damage the immune system. A course of antibiotics is prescribed to provide a much-needed boost alongside your body's own defences.

Anyone with an organ transplant faces a lifetime of drugs to suppress the immune system, otherwise it attacks the transplant, so antibiotics are used to protect the body. "It's a pretty grim future, I think a lot of major surgery would be seriously threatened," said Prof Richard James from the University of Nottingham. "I used to show students pictures of people being treated for tuberculosis in London - it was just a row of beds outside a hospital, you lived or you died - the only treatment was fresh air." And this, he says, is what running out of drugs for tuberculosis would look like in the future. But this is all in the future isn't it? "My lab is seeing an increasing number of resistant strains year on year," said Prof Neil Woodford, from the Health Protection Agency's antimicrobial resistance unit.

Solar-Powered Proteins Filter Antibiotics from Water
April 19, 2013 : Cancer-causing chemicals and drugs like antibiotics pollute many of America's lakes, rivers and drinking water supplies.

Activated carbon filters can remove about 40 percent of carcinogens and antibiotics from these waters. But a tiny solar-powered filter made of two bacterial proteins absorbs more than 50 percent more of the pollutants. In addition, the filter - developed by a team at the University of Cincinnati - can release the captured antibiotics so they can be reused.

Antibiotics and chemicals enter waterways through sewage and run-off from yards and farms. They can breed resistant bacteria and kill helpful microorganisms, degrading the health of aquatic ecosystems. The nano-filters, each smaller than the diameter of a human hair, employ a protein used by drug-resistant bacteria to excrete waste, but the researchers have turned it around so it sucks compounds in. Another protein, which responds to sunlight, provides the pumping power for the filter.

Environmental engineer David Wendell, one of the developers, calls the innovation an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to extract and recover antibiotics from surface waters. He foresees the possibility that, one day, a collection of nano-filters could be anchored downstream from urban or farming areas to capture harmful compounds in water. Details of the development and testing of the new filter appear in the journal Nano Letters.

April 19, 2013 : A fish parasite with a needle-like nose that pierces the intestines of its host has inspired a revolutionary medical invention that could replace surgical staples now used to hold skin grafts in place and close serious wounds.

Researchers at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, led by biomedical engineer Jeffrey Karp, say they saw a need for an improved medical adhesive and looked to nature for ideas. When we started looking into the parasite literature, we quickly stumbled upon worms and, in particular, this spiny-headed worm that has a needle-like proboscis [nose] that inserts in the intestine of fish ... and only the needles swell, so it kind of mechanically locks into place," said Karp, describing a freshwater-fish parasite called Pomphorhynchus laevis, whose swelling and locking needle-nose design gave his team a model for the new and improved surgical bandage with unique adhesive properties.

Karp's prototype, a microneedle-lined bandage that plumps up when exposed to water, locks painlessly into the patient's subdermal tissue and adheres 3-and-a-half times more strongly than any clinical bandage now in use. The elongated microneedle tips, made with a rigid plastic core, attach to stiff plastic inner and outer layers of highly absorbent material that is similar to the inside of a disposable diaper. When wet, the needles form a mechanical bond with the tissue. The microneedle patch is also designed to eliminate two specific problems with surgery involving skin-grafts.

According to Karp, who consulted with Dr. Bo Pomahac, head of face transplant surgery at Brigham and Womens, when conventional staples hold skin grafts in place, they can produce holes 2-to-3 times larger than the width of the staple itself, allowing for potentially harmful bacterial infections. The grafts, Karp says, are also susceptible to filling with accumulated fluids, which can prevent healing. Instead of using staples," Karp said, "we would apply a microneedle patch directly on top of the skin graft that will push down to the underlying tissue and essentially lock that graft in place."

Karp also envisions impregnating microneedle patches with antibiotics and other drugs that would infuse slowly into wounds, helping to keep them clean and quick-healing. Researchers are attempting to develop a microneedle patch that can be used to help seal, and heal, internal organs following surgery. When it comes to removing the bandage, Karp doesnt think it would hurt more than pulling out surgical staples, which penetrate skin more deeply than the microneedles on the new bandage patch. The work by Karp and colleagues was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health. An article describing a new micro-needle surgical bandage is published in Nature Communications.

Report: Drug-Resistant Bacterial Infections Growing in US
September 16, 2013 WASHINGTON A new U.S. government report says more than two million Americans fall ill each year with drug-resistant infections, and 23,000 of them are dying as a result. Officials warn that steps must be taken now to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs.

The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] said the estimate of two million drug resistant infections a year is likely an underestimate, and that the number probably will grow. Without urgent action to reverse that trend, warned Tom Frieden, whose agency wrote the report, the miracle drugs to fight them wont be available in the future. If we are not careful, the medicine chest will be empty when we go there to look for a lifesaving antibiotic for someone with a deadly infection. But if we act now, we can preserve these medications while we continue to work on development of new medications.

Among the most worrying pathogens, the report names a drug-resistant strain of the venereal disease gonorrhea and C. difficile, which causes about one quarter of a million hospitalizations in the United States annually, and at least 14,000 deaths. Experts say a third bacterium, which goes by the initials CRE, is probably the most dangerous. It is resistant to almost all currents antibiotics, and has a very high fatality rate.

Drug resistance develops through the overuse and inappropriate use of antibacterial agents. These can be: Doctors prescribing them to patients who have viral infections that are not affected by medicine meant to fight bacteria; patients not taking all of their medicine as prescribed, so the bacteria making them sick are only weakened, not killed; antibiotic use in healthy farm animals to prevent illness and promote growth. Antibiotic residues left in meat and animal products can then lead to drug resistance in humans. To limit the spread of resistant infections, experts recommend wider use of routine immunizations, as well as handwashing in hospitals and other health care facilities, which are reservoirs of the harmful infections. Also, the report urges handwashing by food handlers.

In a telebriefing with reporters, Michael Bell, deputy director of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at CDC, said patients also can play a role in preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics by asking health care providers a few simple questions. 'What are you doing to make sure that my mom doesn't get an antibiotic resistant infection?' Questions like that can raise awareness and open a dialogue that can be very helpful, said Bell. Patients recovering from joint replacement surgeries, organ transplants and cancer therapy rely on effective antibiotics to fight off infections that often follow those treatments. Experts say the increase in drug-resistant bacteria could affect the ability to safely offer people many modern medical advances.

Antibacterial Soaps Could Pose Health Risks...

Is This the End of Antibacterial Soap?
December 16, 2013 ~ The Food and Drug Administration announced that it is cracking down on soap, and this is great news for Purell.

The FDA published a consumer update Monday on triclosan, the active ingredient in antibacterial soap, stating, "In fact, there currently is no evidence that over-the-counter antibacterial soap products are any more effective at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water." And, "Moreover, antibacterial soap products contain chemical ingredients, such as triclosan and triclocarban, which may carry unnecessary risks given that their benefits are unproven."

The FDA will propose a rule that would put greater onus on manufacturers to back up the "antibacterial" claim. True, much of the benefit of soap comes from the mere act of rubbing your hands together and rinsing them with water. But as the FDA casts a wary eye toward hand soaps, there is a (slightly more) proven alternativealcohol.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Alcohol-based products are more effective for standard handwashing or hand antisepsis by HCWs [health care workers] than soap or antimicrobial soaps." However, the CDC notes, in too-small volumes (.2 to .5 ml) soap and water are better than alcohol-based sanitizers. The FDA does mention, however, that for food-service personnel, hand sanitizers are no substitution for washing.

That being said, there's still some questions being raised about hand sanitizers. The FDA has also called out alcohol-based hand sanitizers in the past for claims that they can prevent MRSA infections. And it is still unclear whether they work "equally well for all classes of germs," the CDC reports. In any case, GOJO, the maker of Purell, is happy to point out that its product does not contain triclosan.

Non-Antibiotic Treatment Successful in Fighting Difficult Infection
eptember 26, 2015 - The bacterium C. difficile lives harmlessly in the intestines of many people, but, it can strike those whose immune systems are weakened, particularly those in hospital settings and nursing homes.

If the bacterium infects and overwhelms a patient, it can cause serious illness. In the United States alone, C. difficile costs more than $4 billion per year to treat. Approximately 15,000 of the quarter-million people who are stricken annually die. Antibiotics, which are used to disarm the bacterial infection, can also kill off beneficial microbes in the gut that normally keep C. difficile in check.

A drug called ebselen doesnt actually kill C. difficile, but it prevents the release of toxins that cause tissue inflammation as well as life-threatening dehydration and diarrhea, said Matthew Bogyo, a pathology and microbiology professor at Stanford University in California. Basically, it shuts down the disease, he said.

Multiple antibiotic-resistant strains of Clostridium difficile have recently emerged. Researchers have found a non-antibiotic drug that could help combat C. difficile infection.

In experiments with mice, reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine, animals received C. difficile toxins treated with ebselen or plain, untreated toxins. All of the rodents injected with the treated solution lived, while those in the untreated group died within two days.

The good news, Bogyo said, is that the compound appears to be safe in humans. It turned out to be an interesting lead compound, because its already in humans and its safe," he said. "And even though its not a drug approved by the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] yet, the fact that we know it can be put into humans without causing toxic side effects means it has a high chance of being a useful agent. Clinical trials of ebselen approved by the FDA are under way in the treatment of stroke and bipolar disorder.

'Antibiotic Apocalypse’ a Step Closer, Scientists Warn
November 20, 2015 — With the discovery in China of bacteria that have developed resisistance to all known antibiotic medicines, scientists are warning that an "antibiotic apocalypse" may be a step closer.

A report on the bacteria, published in The Lancet, a medical journal, prompted Chinese authorities to consider banning the use of some antibiotics in animals. The bacteria in China, found in pigs, were resistant to even the strongest of antibiotics, a medicine called colistin. Fifteen percent of raw meat samples tested — and 16 human patients — were infected.

Dr. Peter Barlow of Scotland's Edinburgh Napier University, who has worked at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told VOA that "it's actually the use of this antibiotic in livestock that’s promoted this. And because antibiotics are used so widely in livestock and in humans, it’s got us to the stage where we’re facing a problem with antibiotic resistance in a lot of different types of bacteria."

Chinese scientists have identified a genetic mutation known as MCR-1 that provides the antibiotic resistance — and it can easily spread across different species of bacteria. Evidence of resistant strains of bacteria have also been found in Laos and Malaysia, scientists said.

Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization, this week joined the chorus of warnings. “The world is heading toward a post-antibiotics era in which common infections will once again kill," she said. "If current trends continue, sophisticated interventions like organ transplantation, joint replacement, cancer chemotherapy and care of preterm infants will become more difficult or even too dangerous to undertake."

Barlow said urgent action was needed to avert such a catastrophe. “We need a really effective global strategy for dealing with antibiotic use, both in humans and in livestock," he said. "And I think we need increased and sustained investment in antibiotic drug discovery."

"This just isn't how antibiotics are meant to be used. So this overuse of the antibiotics is causing antibiotic-resistant bacteria to grow in the farms, and this spreads into the environment." And that has been linked to more infections in humans that do not respond to available drugs, and an estimated 700,000 deaths a year globally.

Consumer pressure forces change

Many farmers, including Tory Hancock of Ploughshares Community Farm, already raise livestock without antibiotics. "You give the animals a stress-free environment and a healthy diet, you know, really good feed, and you generally don't need it," she said. And many customers willingly pay more for antibiotic-free beef, as well as bacon from antibiotic-free pigs. In fact, consumer pressure has been a major force in bringing about that change, says Anna Zorzet, a scientist and activist who spoke at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting. "Sweden was the first country in the world to ban the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in 1986, and the EU followed suit in 2006," she said. "The farmers felt that they couldn't justify the use of antibiotics, and the public opinion was quite a lot against it."

Europeans see improvements

Many Northern European countries now ban regular antibiotics for healthy livestock, and they also have stricter rules for human antibiotics. It has paid off, according to Diarmaid Hughes, a Swedish professor of bacteriology. "Consistently, the Nordic countries – Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark – have lower rates of resistance for all of the major infections," he said. "And you see the countries of southern and eastern Europe where regulation is much more lax, they have much, much higher rates of resistance. And in many cases it's completely out of control, so the message is that regulating usage and the total amount that you use really does have an effect."

The use of antibiotics in livestock helps the animals stay healthy and grow faster, but bacteria develop resistance to the drugs, and those resistant bacteria can spread to people.

Hughes says the entire world needs these policies. Otherwise, he warns, antibiotic-resistant pathogens will cause more deaths from currently treatable illnesses such as pneumonia, cholera and tuberculosis. In addition, he says, deaths after routine surgery for an injured knee or a heart attack may become commonplace. "All of these will become very dangerous operations,” Hughes said, “because you have to give them effective antibiotics to have a safe operation."

CDC, doctors group issue advice for not taking antibiotics
Jan. 19, 2016 - Most respiratory tract infections are not affected by antibiotics, leading experts to suggest patients are counseled on easing symptoms as illnesses run their course.

Acute respiratory tract infections bring adults to the doctor's office the most often, and antibiotics are the most common treatment. A physician's group and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention contend, however, that antibiotics are generally not necessary for the infections. The American College of Physicians and CDC issued a set of recommendations for the treatment of ARTIs -- which include acute uncomplicated bronchitis, pharyngitis, rhinosinusitis, and the common cold -- moving away from antibiotics because they do not treat the conditions. Previous research has shown about half of all antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, and many antibiotics are losing their efficacy because of unnecessary use.

While many patients expect antibiotics, including for the common cold, physicians are recommended to help patients treat symptoms and educate them on the lack of effect the drugs have on ARTIs and similar infections. "Inappropriate use of antibiotics for ARTIs is an important factor contributing to the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections, which is a public health threat," Dr. Wayne J. Riley, president of the ACP, said in a press release. "Reducing overuse of antibiotics for ARTIs in adults is a clinical priority and a High Value Care way to improve quality of care, lower health care costs, and slow and/or prevent the continued rise in antibiotic resistance."

Experts at the CDC and American College of Physicians recommend skipping antibiotics for a number of acute respiratory tract infections they don't really treat.

The new guidelines on antibiotic use, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, set out four health situations that, based on a review of previous studies and medical data, either do not require antibiotic use or recommend their use with specific infections. For the common cold, doctors are recommended not to prescribe antibiotics and focus on treating symptoms, with additional treatments considered if symptoms continue for more than two weeks or get worse, although antibiotics still would not help. Patients with uncomplicated bronchitis should not receive antibiotics unless they have pneumonia, and the experts suggest testing should not be done either unless the patient is thought to have pneumonia. Symptoms should be treated with cough suppressants, expectorants, antihistamines and decongestants.

Patients with sore throats also should not receive antibiotics because they do not improve symptoms, and a similar recommendation was made for patients with uncomplicated sinus infections, which generally improve with supportive care. In nearly all cases, the guidelines significantly suggest counseling patients on the lack of an effect antibiotics have on these illnesses and that other treatments can be more effective at easing symptoms. "Although it is everyone's responsibility to use antibiotics appropriately, providers have the power to control prescriptions," researchers wrote in the guidelines. "Reducing inappropriate antibiotic prescribing will improve quality of care, decrease health care costs, and preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics."

"It infuriates me to know they knew about this in 2012," Steven Wilkinson-St. George, one of the affected patients, told the Los Angeles Times. "This should have been done years ago."

Olympus makes 85 percent of duodenoscopes. The remaining are manufactured by Pentax and Fuji. There's no work on whether the companies will volunteer or be made to recall and repair the devices as well. Despite the recall, Olympus has denied culpability, claiming their scopes are safe to use if cleaning instructions are meticulously followed. "Although we do not agree with all of the report's conclusions, we are closely reviewing the recommendations in the report as part of Olympus' ongoing efforts to increase patient safety associated with use of Olympus duodenoscopes," the company said in a statement.

I would have to be DYING to take Antibiotics!!!!

Problem these day's is every time a kid has a COLD....Mom tales them down to the Doc.....and get's them Antibiotics which they get a 10 day dosage.....and then after a few days of taking them they feel better....and the parents don't force the kid's to finish the full antibiotic regiment.....then the Bacterial Infection becomes resistant to the antibiotic that the kid only took 2 to 4 days worth a 10 day regiment then the Bacteria evolves or mutates into a Bacteria than standard antibiotics cannot kill.

Many times a Cold which is a Virus and cannot be caused by anything other than a persons own immune system will cause the human body to have symptoms such as coughing and runny nose which a person will touch or get soreness that will develop into individual bacterial infections per symptoms.

If the symptoms develop really bad infections then antibiotics are necessary....but if a person or child does not finish the entire antibiotic regiment and the infection comes back.....the Bacteria Mutates and is difficult if not impossible to cure with antibiotics

January 21, 2016 - Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem worldwide. One of the biggest culprits is treatment for routine colds. Experts say doctors often send their patients home with prescriptions for antibiotics because they can not determine the source of the illnesses.

Researchers concerned about the overuse of antibiotics have developed a blood test to help physicians determine whether patients' colds are the result of bacterial or viral infections. Ephraim Tsalik, a professor of medicine at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and an emergency room physician, said viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, and if such drugs are prescribed unnecessarily, there is the risk of creating resistance to antibiotics in the patient over time. When you magnify that against millions of people who are getting antibiotics unnecessarily, what might have been a small risk becomes a very real one across the population, Tsalik said.

A microbiologist reads a panel to check on a bacterium's resistance to an antibiotic in the Infectious Disease Laboratory at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The study by Tsalik and his colleagues, described in the journal Science Translational Medicine, involved 31 people, 10 with bacterial pneumonia and 21 with a flu virus. From these, investigators developed the profiles of about 20,000 genes. The gene activity is different, depending upon whether someone is infected with a bacterium or a virus. Then, the researchers tested the blood samples of 300 sick patients. The microbes included rhinoviruses and strep infections.

Tsalik and his team compared the results to the gene profiles of people who were not sick, "and we found we got an accuracy of 87 percent" in distinguishing noninfectious from infectious illness and bacterial from viral causes, "which we very excited to see, considering there is really very little out there and just about any ability to discriminate between these different groups is an improvement over the current state. Currently, it takes one day for the gene expression test to yield a result. Tsalik said researchers are trying to whittle the processing time down to an hour or less.

That's because every Mother...every time their kid has a sniffle....the Mother brings the kid to the Doctor and demands and Antibiotic!!!

Also even though I am sort of a clean freak as far as organization as the Girls next door always tell me when they spend the night....and I gave each of them their own closet and their own built into the closet shoe storage area and they both have been given two absolutely stunning 120 year old antique Mirrored Bureaus as one was my now passed away at 111 Great Aunt and other one was her sisters my Grandmother who passed away at 98 so they are identical and I designed my Master Bedroom to have very large walk in closets with mirrors on the outside of the 4 double sliding oak doors covered with mirrors on the outside and as my buddy owns a Glass Company I made sure he got me Mirrors which do not make a person look like they gained 10 lbs as they show a true representation of the body.

So the girls have ALREADY filled both of their massive sliding dual mirror door closets and now they are filling the 3rd dual walk in and I have my own dual walk in.

They also have filled both the Mirrored Bureaus with their....I like to all them....MENTIONABLES as guy's....YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW YOUNG WOMEN VIEW SEX!!!

They are like GUY's in that sense!!!

We have an agreement we do NOT have any form of sex with ANYONE other than me....the girls....and their one friend and Sky sometimes drops by for a free for all.

I demand BLOOD TEST RESULTS and I will not engage in any sexual activity unless my Law Firm has E-Mailed or FAXed over FROM THE DOCTORS OFFICE...Blood Test results!!

But the girls for members who don't know want to get Married!!!

They bought this nice big home next to my home in Western Mass. as I own homes in Florida and on Maro Island.

They told their BOTH MILITARY FATHERS that they were buying that beautiful home as INVESTMENT PROPERTY!!!

And BOTH THEIR DAD'S ARE MILITARY!!!!

The girls made me give my word and promise I would not tell their dad's as the day I met the girls this guy who was drunk and had an open warrant on his ass went over and broke their (*)(*)(*)(*) BUDDY RULES as the girls who are only 23 and 24....are Bi-Sexual so they have a need for a man once in a while.

This IDIOT.....showed up at their home drunk and was hurting them.

THAT....is how I met the girls as this guy was holding the younger one by her arm and I could see red welts and back and blue thumb prints on the girls....as I ran through the woods between our homes and came out on their lawn on the garage side.

They were crying and yelling for help.....I yelled at the guy to stop...he swore at me.....I came over and put him in a sleeper hold by cutting off the O2 and Blood to this brain...he passed out....I carefully put him on the grass.....I told the girls to call the cops....THEIR MILITARY AND THEN I FIND OUT BEST FRIEND FATHERS.....jump out of the same car and come running up to ME!!!

The girls had already made me promise not to tell their dad's as this guy spelled the whle relationship out for the whole neighborhood before I put him out.

The dad's understood what happened...the cop's came....the guy had an outstanding warrant and was arrested on the spot!!!

ANYWAYS.....I NEVER GET SICK!!!

Why?

Because I take a Multivitamin EVERY DAY....and eat right ad run and swim and lift weights!!!

But the girls when I first met them were an allergenic mess!!!

I taught them how to change their air filter in their furnace and what things were OK to clean and what things a human body needs periodic exposure to to build up immunity.

They have not been sick in over 1 year and so might think that's no big deal but for these girls it's huge!!!

These 8 monosaccharides are in and on the surface of every cell in the body. They are necessary as the glyco of glycoproteins on the surface of every cell, as transmitter or receptor, of all the vital reactions between cells: defense, repair, regulation, nutrition, and apoptosis, (the programmed death and recycling of all cells). Every cell in the body (100 Trillion or so!) is replaced at different rates: (e.g. WBC, 6-7 days; RBC's, 3-4 months; DNA and most Internal Organs, 6 months; Bone, 9 months to years; Brain and CNS, 14 months). These monosaccharides are present as a substrate in the endoplasmic reticulum, and as building blocks for the glycosolation occurring in the Golgi apparatus of cells, forming glycoproteins, proteoglycans, glycolipids, and the N- and O- and GPI- anchored linkages (Nitrogen- ,Oxygen-, and Glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol- linkages). This is all under control of the DNA as the blueprint, and mRNA, as the message. The glycoproteins translate the messages and send chemical signals (cytokines) to the appropriate receptors, (also glycoproteins) to facilitate the proper action at the cellular level. This is the Universal Code of Life, equivalent to the Microsoft Operating System, which runs all computers! This is extremely complicated and has to be, not 99.9999% perfect, but 100%, or there is dysfunction, disease, or death! I have studied it intensively, still know so little, but yet enough to be awed and excited by what I have witnessed! Supplying Glyconutritionals in the diet has enabled the body to modulate the immune system: elevate those elements that are too low, as in Cancer and AIDS; reduce those that are too high, as in autoimmune diseases; or do both, as in most of the immune dysfunctions!!

That's because every Mother...every time their kid has a sniffle....the Mother brings the kid to the Doctor and demands and Antibiotic!!!

Also even though I am sort of a clean freak as far as organization as the Girls next door always tell me when they spend the night....and I gave each of them their own closet and their own built into the closet shoe storage area and they both have been given two absolutely stunning 120 year old antique Mirrored Bureaus as one was my now passed away at 111 Great Aunt and other one was her sisters my Grandmother who passed away at 98 so they are identical and I designed my Master Bedroom to have very large walk in closets with mirrors on the outside of the 4 double sliding oak doors covered with mirrors on the outside and as my buddy owns a Glass Company I made sure he got me Mirrors which do not make a person look like they gained 10 lbs as they show a true representation of the body.

So the girls have ALREADY filled both of their massive sliding dual mirror door closets and now they are filling the 3rd dual walk in and I have my own dual walk in.

They also have filled both the Mirrored Bureaus with their....I like to all them....MENTIONABLES as guy's....YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW YOUNG WOMEN VIEW SEX!!!

They are like GUY's in that sense!!!

We have an agreement we do NOT have any form of sex with ANYONE other than me....the girls....and their one friend and Sky sometimes drops by for a free for all.

I demand BLOOD TEST RESULTS and I will not engage in any sexual activity unless my Law Firm has E-Mailed or FAXed over FROM THE DOCTORS OFFICE...Blood Test results!!

But the girls for members who don't know want to get Married!!!

They bought this nice big home next to my home in Western Mass. as I own homes in Florida and on Maro Island.

They told their BOTH MILITARY FATHERS that they were buying that beautiful home as INVESTMENT PROPERTY!!!

And BOTH THEIR DAD'S ARE MILITARY!!!!

The girls made me give my word and promise I would not tell their dad's as the day I met the girls this guy who was drunk and had an open warrant on his ass went over and broke their (*)(*)(*)(*) BUDDY RULES as the girls who are only 23 and 24....are Bi-Sexual so they have a need for a man once in a while.

This IDIOT.....showed up at their home drunk and was hurting them.

THAT....is how I met the girls as this guy was holding the younger one by her arm and I could see red welts and back and blue thumb prints on the girls....as I ran through the woods between our homes and came out on their lawn on the garage side.

They were crying and yelling for help.....I yelled at the guy to stop...he swore at me.....I came over and put him in a sleeper hold by cutting off the O2 and Blood to this brain...he passed out....I carefully put him on the grass.....I told the girls to call the cops....THEIR MILITARY AND THEN I FIND OUT BEST FRIEND FATHERS.....jump out of the same car and come running up to ME!!!

The girls had already made me promise not to tell their dad's as this guy spelled the whle relationship out for the whole neighborhood before I put him out.

The dad's understood what happened...the cop's came....the guy had an outstanding warrant and was arrested on the spot!!!

ANYWAYS.....I NEVER GET SICK!!!

Why?

Because I take a Multivitamin EVERY DAY....and eat right ad run and swim and lift weights!!!

But the girls when I first met them were an allergenic mess!!!

I taught them how to change their air filter in their furnace and what things were OK to clean and what things a human body needs periodic exposure to to build up immunity.

They have not been sick in over 1 year and so might think that's no big deal but for these girls it's huge!!!

I didn't have a single sniffle last year, and I am sure it is because I started using a scrub brush on my hands 2-3 times/day. I don't think just washing with soap and water does much--which is why doctors scrub with a brush before performing surgery. I think the CDC should advise all people to scrub, and I think children should be taught how to scrub their dirty little hands.

Antibiotics must o my be prescribed when necessary and patients must follow the prescription exactly. Not taking it exactly as prescribed and not taking it for the full prescribed time can n lead to building up a tolerance for the drug. Patients , not doctors can cause if you are a poor medication taker then ask for a an antibkotic that is pres cribed for a shorter period of time if there is one for your illness.

Poor treatment outcomes are often due to patients not complying with the prescription and the doctors instructions

Fri, 04 Nov 2016 - Given the complexity of antibiotics resistance, what should we do to tackle the problem?

Every year, at least 700,000 people die from drug-resistant infections. It is why government scientists have described antibiotic resistance as one of the greatest global threats of the 21st Century. So what are people doing to try to avert the so-called antibiotics apocalypse? Well, it turns out, quite a lot. First, there are those who are trying to get us to take fewer antibiotics. That is because the more antibiotics we all take, the more resistant bacteria become. Jason Doctor, a psychologist at the University of Southern California, has been carrying out experiments to see whether it is possible to get doctors to prescribe fewer pills. He persuaded more than 200 doctors to sign a letter to their patients, making a commitment to prescribe antibiotics more judiciously. They blew it up into the size of a poster and put it on the walls of their health clinics.

Then they experimented with a ranking system, sending doctors a monthly email telling them how many antibiotics they were prescribing inappropriately compared to their peers. They set up alerts on doctors' computers, prompting them to question whether they really needed to prescribe antibiotics and they also found ways that doctors could appease persistent patients who demanded the medication. When they tried all these different approaches together, it dramatically reduced the number of antibiotic prescriptions issued. Some of these changes are now being implemented across the US and in other countries, but even if people were only given antibiotics when they really needed them, that would not solve the problem. Because while humans are a big market for antibiotics, there is an even bigger one.

Bacteria

In 1950, a chance discovery in a laboratory showed that antibiotics make animals grow faster. Since then, farmers all over the world have pumped them into their animals, even after scientific studies proved that bacterial resistance could pass from animals to humans. But one country has shown that farmers who were once dependent on antibiotics can wean themselves and their animals off them. The Netherlands has more animals per square metre than any other country on the planet and for years, those animals were routinely fed antibiotics. A ban on giving growth-promoting antibiotics to their animals had little effect as farmers used the same amount and just labelled them differently.

But after a series of health scares, the government decided to crack down. In 2009, farmers were told they had to reduce the amount of antibiotics they were giving their animals by 20% in two years and 50% in five. Dik Mevius is an infectious disease specialist and vet who helped farmers draw up a plan to meet those targets. They set up a database, revealing which farmers were the worst offenders, and stopped farmers from shopping round for antibiotics from different vets. Any vets or farmers who prescribed or used antibiotics unnecessarily were fined or lost their accreditation. And, surprisingly, Dutch farmers got on board. They stopped using so many antibiotics, which, for many of them, meant they had to change the way they reared their animals. "It really was a revolution," says Mr Mevius. "We reduced the amount of antibiotics used by 60% in just a couple of years."
