That's how it goes. Right from the blueprint for establishing a totalitarian state: The state exploits a real or imagined threat to frighten the population into tolerating it's power grabs under the cover of national security untill all checks and balances have been eliminated. And then the population isnt safe from their own government which is then free to do whatever it wants. In a fascist system, the multinational corporations and financial institutions that control state power and the economic life of the country rule through a system of state-terror. The citizens are slaves to these "democratic institutions" as Washington describes them. Any form of protest to the status quo is answered with extrajudicial executions, indefinite detentions without charge or trial; torture; rape; extraordinary renditions, and forced disappearances. The Führer now has the power to do all these things.
you have just ignored Godwin's law of Nazi analogies, this is not a sufficiently long internet discussion!
Obama made a brilliant political move by not using the veto. He made it clear that he, as president, would never use this authority it, but he could not say the same for the republicans who came up with and supported the bill. He makes it clear in several speaches about it that it was the republicans who wanted it and if he did not let it pass they would hold the nation hoastage again and nothing would get done. He placed it all on their heads.
In practice, this law is a good idea. if someone takes part in a group that is actively at war with America, from a legal standpoint, they are no longer american citizens. The problem is there are so many BS reasons for a person to be named "suspected" a terrorist, such as having 7 weeks or more worth of food in your house. This means my friend, who lives in the country and only comes into town for groceries every month and a half, could be arrested under this law.
So because the dear leader said he wouldnt use the authority it is true? Even if he's sincere the power will be there for the next administration to use.
George Washington (among very many others) was a terrorist to the powers that were. Does that make terrorism right. Not in the slightest.
