People have always used gods to explain things they didn't understand or couldn't cope with. Before modern science, they tried to use gods to explain all kinds of natural phenomena. Monotheistic religions are just the kind that tend to survive in the face of more information. It's hard for science to explain away something as vague as the abrahamic god, and so people can still be persuaded to believe comforting lies.
