Who has seen it and what did you think? I saw it on Sunday, and quite liked it. Its not the sort of movie I would normally watch, as I am not a fan of those movies with the weird looking alien things, but this looked good, and I did enjoy it. It took about 45 minutes for it to get interesting, though, I felt. Then it was non stop after that. I like the fact that the only big name star in this film was Charlize Theron, all the others were basically unknowns. After watching Noomi Repace, though (Elizabeth Shaw) I reckon she's the next big thing. What an amazing talent!
Here we go. A review of this film from my favorite movie reviewers: http://blip.tv/redlettermedia/half-in-the-bag-episode-33-prometheus-6196961
As much as I love the Wire and Idris Elba(he is good in the show Luther as well), he isn't all that famous. Michael Fassbender on the other hand though, is a pretty well known actor. This is the third blockbuster movie he has been a major character in, after Inglorious Bastards and more significantly Magneto in the newest X-men film(which was quite good as well). PS. I thought Prometheus was really great!! Never cared all that much for the Alien franchise, but I liked this a lot.
Agreed. And yes, Prometheus is very good. I don't think it is as good as Alien or Aliens- but I hold both of those in very high regard. Once again a very strong female reluctant hero, who overcomes her fears to do the best possible. She was excellent. For those who have seen the movie I just want to say "Stapling".....
I thought it was great the only reason I watched it was beause of charlize theron, that and im a fan of sci fi horrors
I saw it Sunday as well. I really liked it. The concept of the story was intriguing, and I was left hoping that the movie makes enough to warrant the planned sequel. It hasn't been a box office smash so far. It opened at #2 domestically, despite a huge media campaign. A lot of people feel that this movie holds the fate of the "R rated sci-fi thriller/horror" genre. They used to be common, but the big push now is to make PG-13 films because they typically do better. I hope this movie does well. The budget was 130 million, and the worldwide gross so far has been about 260 million, which means it probably just made its money back. It still has yet to open in a few key markets, and then with DVD and blu ray sales, it should hopefully make enough money to get a sequel. I have a few issues with the plot... specifically how they tied it in with the Alien franchise, but I don't want to spoil anything. Great film, overall.
I think it will require a sequel to tie up those loose ends. It did ask more questions than it answered.
Yep, and 90% of the flak the movie is getting is for precisely that reason. People went in expecting a true blue prequel to Alien, and they really didn't get that. This was a tangential storyline that would touch the Alien franchise several times, but it wasn't on that track the whole way, and a lot of people were disappointed. I actually like that they went somewhere else with the idea with plans to tie it up all later. The next movie is supposed to be even further away from the Alien franchise, and then the sequel after that (if they get it), will tie the two together properly.
I enjoyed it and I don't understand why some critics are whining about it. Okay I am a scifi fan from childhood (I saw the original broadcast of Dr Who when it was aired by the BBC) but this was still a great film. Prequels are always going to be problematic because they involve reconstruction of the precursor events to those which were portrayed in the original film, in this case Alien followed up by the incomparable Aliens (I'll stop there, not a fan of the subsequent manifestations). The film addressed some huge metaphysical issues and of course posed more questions than it answered but I think some reviewers hammered it because they thought it was going to be some sort of documentary (i.e. explain the origins of humanity and the meaning of life). I suspect they forgot that it is "entertainment".
We have been trying to get to see it and almost made it yesterday but were derailed by a long walk and a pub lunch. I'll try again today. Idris Elba is the God protecting the gate in Thor, btw. I like him in Luther also, but he's been in loads and loads of things: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0252961/
