Recent Heat Spike Unlike Anything in 11,000 Years

By Seth Borenstein | AP Science Writer | 03/08/2013
    Excerpts:

WASHINGTON (AP) – “A new study looking at 11,000 years of climate temperatures shows the world in the middle of a dramatic U-turn, lurching from near-record cooling to a heat spike.

Research released Thursday in the journal Science uses fossils of tiny marine organisms to reconstruct global temperatures back to the end of the last ice age.

It shows how the globe for several thousands of years was cooling until an unprecedented reversal in the 20th century.

Scientists say it is further evidence that modern-day global warming isn't natural, but the result of rising carbon dioxide emissions that have rapidly grown since the Industrial Revolution began roughly 250 years ago.

The decade of 1900 to 1910 was one of the coolest in the past 11,300 years - cooler than 95 percent of the other years, the marine fossil data suggest. Yet 100 years later, the decade of 2000 to 2010 was one of the warmest, said study lead author Shaun Marcott of Oregon State University.

Global thermometer records only go back to 1880, and those show the last decade was the hottest for this more recent time period.

"In 100 years, we've gone from the cold end of the spectrum to the warm end of the spectrum," Marcott said. "We've never seen something this rapid. Even in the ice age the global temperature never changed this quickly."

The temperature trend produces a line shaped like a "hockey stick" with a sudden spike after what had been a fairly steady line. That data came from tree rings, ice cores and lake sediments.

Marcott's research finds the climate had been gently warming out of the ice age with a slow cooling that started about 6,000 years ago.
Then the cooling reversed with a vengeance.

The study shows the recent heat spike "has no precedent as far back as we can go with any confidence, 11,000 years arguably," said Pennsylvania State University professor Michael Mann, who wrote the original hockey stick study but wasn't part of this
    research.

He said scientists may have to go back 125,000 years to find warmer temperatures potentially rivaling today's.

Marcott said the general downward trend of temperatures that reversed 100 years ago seemed to indicate the Earth was heading either toward another ice age or little ice age from about 1550 to 1850. Or it was continuing to cool naturally until greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels changed everything.

"We have, through human emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases, indefinitely delayed the onset of the next ice age and are now heading into an unknown future where humans control the thermostat of the planet," said Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech University, responding in an email.”

    .......

Well, Happy oil drilling, freaky fracking, the Keystone XL proposed pipeline from Canada to Texas, clear-cutting of forests to build yet another Walmart parking lot, the stubborn use of gasoline in our SUVs and idiotic spewing of even more pollution into our fetid atmosphere, and our Congress looking the other way as corporations receive subsidies as they continue to add to our swift global warming that defies any logic whatsoever.

The Earth is a village and is our home, we are accelerating our own demise and that of our future unborn because of greed.

We need to come to terms with Big Oil, Big Gas, and Congress and decide what we will do when we have to wear masks to stay alive when we go outside to go to work, pay exorbitant prices for food, lose animal food sources, and wonder what the sun used to look like as we watch the faster than anticipated deterioration of our water sources, soil, and air that once welcomed our arrival on Earth.

......Wait's for the right to search out 100000 sources until they find just ONE that disputes this so they can show that it's no big deal and not human made.....

The title of this thread is a lie. There was a huge warm up between the years 1000 and 1200. Vikings were farming southern Greenland at the time. FYI they were not driving SUVs.

Next time I suggest you try knowing what you are talking about before making inaccurate claims.

While some regions did see unusually warm temperatures during the medieval warming period, GLOBALLY the temperatures were lower than today.

I can't believe people still believe this tired meme.

Gee...I wonder why they stopped 11,000 years, instead of 12,000 years...oh yeah, becasue that would EXPOSE THEIR BULLCRAP is why.

The "warming" that formed the glaciers and created the Great Lakes, while melting the solid ice sheets that covered much of the Northern Hemishere, abolsutely DWARFS any warming, anywhere, any time since, but that BAN'T BE "BLAMED" on MAN, and therefore cannot be used for a BASIS TO TAX the WEST.

The ENTIRE WARMIST RELIGION, is nothing more than the latest UN Income Redistribution SCAM....Good Lord, the HEAD of the IPCC isw a TRAIN ENGINEER, for PETE's SAKE.

They already ADMITTED in Copenhagen, that the $cam was about "evening the playing field"...nothing else.

Spare us the COMPLETE, NONSENSE speculation of the "Science by Consensus" scam artists....

So let me guess, you have no scientific rebuttal to the study and instead go off on conspiracy theory rants?

Exactly what methods and results obtained in the study are you claiming are inaccurate and for what reason? Note: a tangent does not count. You must give an actual specific explanation as to why you find the methods and results unreliable

Also if you were to actually read an article on the subject you might get some if the answers you are looking for.

Also, just because the earth has warmed naturally in the past doesn't mean that humans aren't the primary cause today. In the past, warming periods took thousands of years, this one has only taken a little over a century.

Furthermore, this new research seems to match up with other research going back only a couple thousand years, really solidifying the data.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/08/world/world-climate-change/index.html?c=homepage-t&page=2

The research also suggests that the planet should be cooling. But it abruptly started warming after the industrial revolution.

You should actually read one of the articles on the study. You might learn something. Or you could just keep going with the belief that all this data is falsified. Because that's what scientists are all about. Going to college for a decade to become scientists to preform fake research and falsify results....

    Go beavers!

Yep, didn't you know that thousands of scientists have banded together in a massive, treacherous liberal plot to seperate American conservatives from their money?

I was going to mention in an anti-climate change thread about an event last year in the Atacama Desert in Chile, the absolute driest place on Earth. It rained and there was a flood. That's not a big deal, really. The Sonora Desert and Death Valley get rainfall.

Now, what is strange is that there has been no rain there for 400 years or as long as humans have been there. Dry river and lake beds to the east haven't had water in 12,000 years or since the last glaciation melted from the stadial period of 14,000 ya.

Now that's unusual enough and coupled with raging wild fires in Australia and melting glaciers in Greenland... there you go. Climate change, period.

Don't the UN! It's obviously a UN plot involving nearly every scientist on the planet to impose some unknown tax that has yet to be presented on god fearing Americans....

Would you care to elaborate? Who stopped 12,000 years ago?

You are very confused. Warming did not create, advancing glacial sheets created the Great Lakes. Oh, and just what was the temp that created the warming?

Are you aware, Master of Grok, of the various stadial and inter-stadial periods during the Pleistocene and Pliocene? Would you like me to name them for you since I'm extremely sure you have no clue WTF I'm talking about?

I'm going to say that I'm probably the closest thing to an expert in this forum.. having studied the animals of N. America in the last 45 million years.

Where are your sources, oh Master of the Grok?

Please, tell me what the temp was on this day 11,000 years ago. Thanks

When you stop driving your car and ride a bicycle to work, if you have a job, let me know.

Care to simplify that detailed thought? Stop driving my car in lieu of a bicycle. Presumably this has to do with heating the atmosphere or you're concerned about exercise.

When talking weather 10,000 years ago, no one talks in days, weeks, months or years. Try 2 to 3000 years and you'll only get general climate based or compared to what we have now. 3 million years ago is easier.

Mike... you didn't ask what time during that day.

This is basically an example of comparing high resolution data to low resolution proxies. The resolution of the proxies used in on the orders of centuries. What you end up with is a smoothed trend essentially averaging the temperature over the trend. Any decadial highs are lost in the resolution.

To make it simple. If you averaged a city's temperature over a year and it came out to 55. You then went out on a nice July day and took the temperature and it was 75. If you said that today was hotter than anytime in the past year you would be doing what this study does.

I take it you live in a grass hut and ride a bicycle to work? Or are you one of those greedy people who pollutes the environment with an automobile, keeping your living space at a comfortable 72 degrees, yet figure someone else needs to make all the sacrifices?

OR you can invest in some mitigation and have the 25 room house and the merc. Admittedly the 25 room house will have it's own renewable power source, it will be using locally sourced food and the merc will run on electricity........

See this is what the straw man builders do not see - the "warmest" believe you CAN have your cake and eat it too - we just have to change the ingredients a little

Obviously, they only way to save the planet is for nuclear armed states to order non-nuclear armed states to return to an agrarian economy. We may have to mandate forced sterilization of these weaker populations as well. In the long run, it will be for the greater good and that is all that matters. If we can shrink the population to an elite nuclear armed club of nations, the planet can be stabilized.

We will lose the planet, if we do not stop this.

I am fine with alternative energy solutions. However, doing things like investing in loser green firms (i.e. Solyndra and other bankrupt companies) and other silliness like $7,500 welfare subsidies for buying hybrids is pissing in the wind and accelerating our course to bankruptcy. The free market knows better where to invest than some moron like Barack Obama who's never had a real job in his life, doesn't understand how the economy works and who simply wants to send his cronies some cash via government spending anyway.
