Truthfully, those polls mean absolutely nothing. The only polls that matter are the actual election results. Clinton never go more than 50%. W did in his reelection. HW Bush got 60.9 avg but lost to Clinton 55.1%? Reagan's 52.8% when his actual election results were 58.8%? Shows you that the polls are meaningless.

PS. I had to respond to your post fast, because I anticipate that I will have to put you on ignore shortly.

Those sources are laughable. The Soviet Union fell because the Soviet system was terrible. It was economically inefficient, and was repressive. Surprisingly people don't like that combination. When that combination exists, people try to make it go away. It fell when it did, because Gorbachev removed the only thing holding the USSR together, and that was violence and the threat of violence.

As far as your other point about the coup, I am well aware of Yeltsins coup. I am not arguing that the Soviet Union fell because Gorbachev wanted it to fall. That is not the case. Gorbachev wanted to reform the system and make it less inefficient and less repressive. However, he wanted to keep the system. He was a communist, and he wanted to preserve the USSR. It just so happens though, that his desire to preserve the USSR, led him to make decisions that hastened it's demise. Removing the threat of violence, meant that when Poland's decision to do away with their communist government, was not met with force by the Soviet elites, the rest of the people of the Soviet Bloc realized the only thing keeping that system together had fallen away. They quickly followed suit. What role does Reagan play in all of that?

oh stop with the realiism you're going to shatter the republican butt kissing myth of Reagan the warrior god...

Gorbachev an agricultural economist started politcal his carreer of economic reform in about 1970 well before Reagan became president...like you said he never intended for the warsaw pact and soviet union to come apart but once the old guard died and he become the big cheese he was free to persue large scale economic reform...his leanings of non violence based on Alexander Dubček's attempt at reform was the end of the warsaw pact, Reagan had bugger all to do with it.

Well, since I'm deleting that liar, I might as well delete you too since 9/11 was not an inside job, yet you continue to go on about it and you and the other Ron Paul types are all conspiracy types. I have no need for that garbage or stupid Ron Paul posts. Ron Paul is a crazy person and so are his followers. Bye bye.

    Not from, through.

Israel has long been the major conduit through which US weapons flowed to the Middle East. And this was for many reasons.

For one, they were often confortable middlemen. As much as a lot of the Arab and Islamic governments did not trust the Government of Israel, the businessmen have to keep a reputation for honest dealing, or they would have no business.

Plus in most of the conflicts, they were not directly involved, so were neutral players.

Remember, the world of international arms shipments is a shell game of companies within companies, working for various governments. And since there was an embargo against Iran, the US could not sell to them directly.

I support the shipments myself, both for the idea of how they would be used, and in order to gain the release of many hostages. But I also do not hide my head in the sand and pretend they did not happen.

Reagan was incredible. Not only did he accomplish a lot as a leader, but he was a very honest and inspiring man of integrity. A role model for the entire nation whose example can still be followed to this day. :flagus:

Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Lincoln, and Washington kick every one else in the ass period.

Also OP, you seem to think that Reagan single handedly defeated the communists.

It was actually a combined effort by every pres from 1945 onward. Reagan got us into a spending war with Russia that caused him to have to raise the debt ceiling 18 times, taxes 11 times, and hastened the inevitable collapse of the soviets by about 6 weeks...

HA HA. Well, I don't have all day to list them all, so here's some of the most prominent ones > Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rob Paul, Paul Ryan, Eric Castor, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity,
Ann Coulter, and anybody who tries to con America into believing the lie of trickle down (Supply Side) economics.

FACT is, when taxes on the rich have been low, job growth & GDP have been also. When taxes on the rich have been high, job growth and GDP growth have been high.

Hilarious. Liberals will make sweeping generalizations without having to show actual facts or evidence to dispute that which they are attempting to mock. The truth hurts.

You didn't present facts or evidence. You asserted something, and then you were guilty of a logical fallacy by assuming that correlation equals causation, even when you didn't present any actual facts or evidence which would make one believe that was the case.

I have presented those facts throughout this thread. Reagan has throughout his life promoted democracy. The opening OP has that fact established on the video. Reagan supported free and fair election throughout the world. He fought for the cause of freedom. To pretend otherwise is just ignoring the facts. Who do you suppose is most responsible for that map and all the countries turning blue during that time frame? The UN? Gorbachev? The Pope? Give me an alternative thesis.

You want some evidence that Reagan was fostering democracy throughout the world? Check out this speech from 1982 detailing the efforts he was pressing the issue domestically and abroad. I could probably find hundreds more speeches where this is a theme for Reagan.

You will have a tough time trying to prove that Reagan did not support democratization of the world.

Where do we go from here? Do we discuss the S and L crisis and its genesis? How about the real cause of the inflation of the late '70s and the Reagan administration's response to it?

We could go on to amnesty for illegal aliens, or the tax reform act of 1986 and how much of a tax cut it really was for middle class Americans.

    What's your pleasure, Patriot?

Sure, I don't remember much about the S & L crisis, or why you think it was Reagans fault. But bring up anything you want. It still does not disprove the fact that Reagan was the greatest president ever, ever.

You haven't presented any evidence. You have presented right wing propaganda, which presents politicians statements of belief, as factual representations of their actual actions. If politicians were only judged by their words, then most of them would be alright. Unfortunately, that is not how it works. Reagan was incredible at those sorts of sunny platitudes about loving freedom, democracy, America, etc. That has absolutely NO bearing on his actual policy decisions, which were in favor of freedom and democracy when it was in his interests to be, and opposed to it when it wasn't. Go tell the people of central America about Reagan's love of freedom and democracy. They will laugh in your face. Reagan loved freedom and democracy no more than any other president, he just built a presidency on a performance(yes performance, all politicians are performers, and Reagan's acting background made him an incredibly talented performer) which presented a specific image he felt was valuable in winning elections. The same is true of ALL politicians, democrats AND Republicans. As I said, he was pro-democracy, when it was convenient, nothing more.

Seems to me I have presented plenty of evidence to prove that Reagan promoted democracy throughout the world, you can neither refute what I have posted or present any evidence to the contrary.

I was in the military intelligence during the Reagan era and know first hand what we were doing in Central America. Again, the best evidence is the map that was posted. Kind of says it all.

    It's actually quite easy.
In Nicaraugua he supported the groups that would ultimately defeat the communist majority that were in position to take power in the country. If they had, that would have been democracy, you see. But Reagan never believed in democracy, he believed in Western power expansion. He didn't care what the people of a sovereign country wanted for themselves. He wanted expanded US influence.
    Democracy never came into it.
