Baby Saybie was believed to be the world's tiniest surviving baby, born at a shocking 8.6 ounces. (Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns)

Her mother gave birth via emergency cesarean section at 23 weeks' gestation. She weighed seven grams less than the previous smallest surviving newborn, who was born in Germany in 2015, according to the hospital.

"She was small and fragile, and could fit in the palm of the hands of her care team," the hospital said.

Doctors said the premature birth was necessary because Saybie was not gaining weight and her mother's life was at risk. She was considered a micropreemie, a baby born before 28 weeks. That early a birth comes with a host of life-threatening medical challenges, the hospital said. https://www.foxnews.com/health/san-diego-hospital-announces-birth-of-worlds-tiniest-surviving-baby This is a great story. Science and medical technology is allowing babies born earlier and earlier to survive. Human Life is a beautiful thing.

    Awesome story.

I watched an extended segment on the Miracle Baby earlier.

    Great stuff.

Agreed. It wasn't that long ago that being born under 28 weeks was a death sentence.

Interestingly, intravenous caffeine is frequently used to help the baby breathe and exchange gasses in the lungs.

Do you think this kind of story will sway public opinion on the various heartbeat laws?

The youngest baby to ever survive was 21 weeks, 4 days - and that was nearly 30 years ago. The technology hasn't changed things that much. 20 weeks is really the earliest babies are expected to survive until an artificial womb is developed.

No. Because viability is still above 20 weeks even with the best technology - and that's unlikely to change much.

Yes the technology has improved things that much. Survival rates are greatly improved over the years.

    Thats often how medicine works.

Nope. The viability range of a fetus has been over 21 weeks for 30 years. That hasn't changed. Nowhere near the moronic heartbeat bill 6 - 8 weeks bull crap.

I just hope the Democrats don’t decide to have a conversation & kill the baby.

IF the baby survives, it will be because the "liberal" med centers and research at major universities gave the baby it's best chance.

You want to save babies? Stop wasting time and money on ineffectual abortion laws and spend it on more incubators for rural hospitals. Save the babies of people who want the babies.

The lungs aren't generally well developed enough to allow life outside the womb and that starts around 20 weeks.

Nevertheless, the survival rates of those children continues to climb.

Thanks to "liberal" Universities and their medical research labs and hospitals.

Funny I've worked in both and there are far fewer libs there than you'd think. ;)

It's nice to have a thread that everyone can agree on. Good luck to this kid and her parents, and kudos to the medical folks who did their thing.

In EU, they just let the babies die most of the time....we at least attempt to deliver babies that have very little chance. Part of the reason for our supposed "terrible" infant mortality rate. Much like our terrible "gun deaths" count, except most of them are suicides, making it seem a lot worse than it actually is. All about number manipulation.

What a load of inflammatory, erroneous BS....

SHOW me a liberal who has said a fetus is not alive.

    SHOW PROOF of your CLAIM.

SHOW PROOF that this baby was not considered a human once it was born.

A human fetus is human and I have NEVER seen anyone say otherwise.

It is NOT A human, as in "legal person" until birth. "Human " is an adjective(look it up) and A human is a noun ...uh, duh, that's TWO different things...

""""That early a birth comes with a host of life-threatening medical challenges, the hospital said."""

But hey, if people can brag about it who cares what the poor kid has to go through?....,.and the millions in dollars spent to keep it alive is paid by who?

My son (17 Y/O today - 160lbs 5'9" all muscle) was born at 2 1/2 lbs. He is healthy physically, and smart. He is likely the exception. But, I went through it and it will change your perspective on abortion immediately, should you go through it.

He is a top Wrestler and top competitor in Jiu Jitsu. He earned the very rare Green Belt, which means any kid with a Black Belt in other disciplines would end up getting choked out or broken by him if they put the two kids in the same room and said "fight". There is no such thing as a Black Belt for kids in Jiu Jitsu and Green Belts are incredibly rare. Leftists would have just thought that he or anyone at his stage of development was human. It is heartening that his Generation "Z" and he specifically are very Conservative in their ideology.

""Leftists would have just thought that he or anyone at his stage of development was human""

    ....no reason why they shouldn't.

Whole generations are not all conservative or all liberal..

ONE person's experience should not mean rights should be taken away from others.

Actually according to the liberal scientists they have moved it up to 24 weeks so anything before then is simply trash, even if it could have a chance at survival they still say it can be slaughtered because they have scientifically proven it can't feel any pain.

But hey, the body parts are still usable so they are more than willing to cut the little fetus up into parts.
