they weren't being actively used.

I lost a small IRA account that I got in a divorce settlement and simply let lay in a bank account. That's California.

And then just for a sense of how "accurate" that article is, consider the statement he made of a frequency being "4 to 20 times higher". That's real "precision". LOL!!!!!

In summary, you blatantly misconstrued a highly imprecise and unreliable article.

I imagine someone started one. I found out some time after the state helped itself to my money they decided I wasn't gong to use
(or may not be able to use) my account had been cleaned out so while commuting to a job in Sacramento from Napa
actually contacting someone in the treasurer's office was nearly impossible.

I was told by the state I could file a claim but in the aftermath of a divorce I was at a low point in my life and decided the amount recovered would just about be equal to what I would have to pay another lawyer, which I refused to do.

It was a bitter costly lesson and one that made my exodus from California years later much easier to make.

I suspect this happened under unclaimed property laws, which every state has. Basically, if an account is dormant and the owner can't be found, after a certain amount of time (5 years?) it gets turned over to the state.

Even after it is turned over, you can file a claim to prove it was your account. Not sure how easy that is.

This wasn't a case of the state "going through private accounts and seizing money they felt wasn't being actively used." That's just Best Friend's spin.

 

We actually have that in my state now. They did that and a lot of people got pretty pissed. 3 Years ago the dems in the legislature came up with a great idea. So after the five years are up, the state posts every name that they think has an account that can be seized to a database, and they have what they call the “Great Iowa Treasure Hunt”. They post it to the site and you can claim it from there, but once posted, it has to stay posted for 3 years. There are actually services that you can pay, and every year the will do the searches for you and call you if they find something.

I’m still not a fan of the state seizing those assets no matter what. It’s NOT their money, and never was.

 

They have been for a while. Many live a number of miles east ,,, spreading the tax, spend and over-regulate ideology to formerly conservative areas of the state.
