How people respond today, how we treat others, how we choose to think about what we've all been through. Our character and mettle is all on display today. I'll be early to admit that I was wrong. I've never felt like I misunderstood something so badly. I've been an intensely vocal critic of Trump for years now. I bet my signature line that he would lose, so I guess I'll be handing that over until inauguration day. I'm here to say I've never been so surprised by an outcome; please continue to surprise me. Prove me wrong. Demonstrate that I misread you. Please recognize the profound responsibility of that office. Please recognize that it's just so much more important than you. Prove me wrong.
Well just remember to pluck that crow first, and all things considered crow may well become and endangered species after this election cycle.
Humility in victory and defeat. Gloating and rubbing salt in the wounds of your fellow americans who I assure you are hurting today. You are failing the litmus test for decency. An anonymous forum tells you more about yourself than anything else.
No gloating just stating facts. And given sir that your side has been essentially gloating in advance before anyone cast a vote some how I just can't bring myself to take your criticism seriously.
I was wrong as well, even as a supporter of Trump. I fully expected to wake up this morning and read about Hillary's win. I suspected Trump would do better than people thought, but I didn't expect him to win. He surprised everyone this election. Nobody thought he'd win the GOP nomination. Few thought he'd beat Hillary. He's overcome low expectations and he's surprised everybody. I hope he can do that again by doing well for the country. I suspect his opposition will be stronger than any in history. - - - Updated - - - I was here when Obama won the 2012 election. Trust me, the gloating you are seeing from conservatives and Republicans (including me), is NOTHING compared to the vitriol spewed by the left after Obama won his second term. One of the longest term left-wing members of this site posted "SUCK IT! **** YOU REPUBLICANS". The same guy shortly after gloated over the news that a right-wing member was diagnosed with cancer. You'll see some gloating from Republicans, because so many of you were so positive Trump would lose, and lose badly. That's expected. You won't see what the left put forth in 2012, though.
what makes you think that Trump respects the profound responsibility of that office any more or less than Clinton ?
Wait...what about all of those "Clinton will win in a landslide" and "prepare for Madame President" threads and post on this forum? Were you performing litmus tests on you fellow Dems in those last few months?
Thank you for an honest and very humane answer. I can only speak for myself, but I've never gloated over victory; I've lost enough times to know it's not worth it. I find it repulsively discompassionate and base. The country deserves better from all of us, and I intend to try in whatever way I can to give Donald Trump a chance. I think the country deserves it.
I'm here to admit that I was wrong. Read it wrong. I didn't believe there was any way we would elect Trump. But the litmus test I'm talking about comes after the votes are counted; people lose and people win. It's how you act today towards those people. Be jubilant if you want, but recognize that there are a lot of your fellow Americans that are hurting. The tables will turn because that's the nature of history. I'm making an attempt to reach out and try. Are you?
As I said, he's surprised me every single step of the way. I hope he has a few more surprises up his sleeve that prove me wrong. The office of President should have the capacity to change people with its burden. My hope is that Trump feels the gravity of the job.
Right. You're absolutely right. We are terribly guilty of gloating in advance. Absolutely. It's how you act today. Do you react with compassion and give it a try? Or do you seek to entrench the pain deeper? Your call.
Have you been on the forum much? We've been attacked daily by certain posters on here in the most virulent way for months now, rubbing our noses in their "sure victory". The responses from Trump supporters have been mild, to say the least. There are still posters here calling us names that run the litany of the "basket of deplorables" list, so please don't act all high and mighty about this.
I agree. There will be some gloaters, but I hope the majority will realize that we need to welcome all. We should not stoop to the level of the MSM, and some of the most vicious Hillary supporters. Please, let's be gracious winners. Kill them with kindness.
Both sides are guilty of plenty of virulent attacks. I still contend that how you act today is more important than carrying the burden of what's been an awful campaign for one more day.
Don't fret man. I think that most Trump supporters were also surprised. I know I was. Trump was probably surprised as well. Furthermore, Clintons concession speech today was as good as they get, imo. You can be proud of her, and yourselves. She took the popular vote. She was the most suited to the job. She fought like hell. And her concession speech was outstanding. So chin up. You'll take it next time. Meanwhile there's life to be lived....jobs, family, hobbies and so on.
you brought up eating crow I .merely suggested plucking it first. Climb down of that high horse it'll make your crotch sore. Anyone should realize that what ever bird you eat plucking it first makes it easier to swallow.
Jubilant? I'm pissed because an ass like Trump reached the highest office! The Dems and Reps offered me jack with these two losers. But God, the hubris...like Clinton was flawless and without fault. They're hurting? Good! Feel my pain!
I'm just trying to put myself in their shoes. If you're told by everyone that you will win by a landslide. And if you have prepared to carry that reality (or hope or whatever you want to call it) forward in dreams, not unlike the birth of a child. And if upon waking, this is all discovered to be untrue, you don't just lose an election. You lose hopes, dreams, and the future in a sense. I don't relish others feeling such a vacuum, even if they are our political adversaries/opposites. They fought hard. They didn't buckle. And they got nearly half the votes. That's neither shabby nor self deceptive. All of us were misled by the media. Consequently, Republicans were prepared to lose. But Democrats weren't. I think that qualifies necessitating a little compassion from us, because it is as if we were given a gift, and theirs was taken away. These are our fellow Americans. We should lift them up. Then when they are firm on their feet again, we can recommence the match. And maybe somewhere down the road, mercy will remember us in our hour of need.
I only rub it in the faces of those who are too proud to concede to the fact that they were wrong. You on the other hand took courage and that's commendable.
What for? Neither do I, but until they feel the pain of their foolishness there's no hope for them. Maybe not, but they did all that for an intellectually and morally bankrupt cause, which they bought into by way of self-deception; and that's nothing to be proud of. There's nothing compassionate about relieving pain that could otherwise heal. Not really. If they were, they wouldn't try to vote an enemy of America into office. Actually that's the last thing we should do, since if we do the lifting they're beholden to us.
