You & I know this - Kurt, the 21 yr old shunned JW didn't expect this from the JW's he's known since he was a toddler and particularly his own family. Good thing he's not living at home anymore, so that's a blessing for him. Can you imagine going into the living room where everyone is and everyone ignores you like you're not even there?

This is the same type of cruel (*)(*)(*)(*), mentality that HS, even grade school kids will do to another.

Lynn, one of Kurt's shunners and his grandma kept harping to Gail about the importance of them 'living forever' and they won't 'live forever' if they talk to someone's who's shunned......then Gail exploded and told Lynn she belongs to a damn cult......it got ugly.

I've known this family for decades and now they're split. Lynn told Gail she'll never speak to her again for calling her religion a 'cult'.....it is.

Nothing to do with religion but I chose to shun my own family because I simply did not like the way they behaved.

In essence they were into playing stupid mind games and some of those games harmed members of my family that didn't deserve to be hurt.

Since I couldn't change the mind games at that stage I decided to shun them all instead. Ultimately I learned how to stop the mind games and returned and shut them down. It was a form of mental bullying that should never have been allowed but it was some of the adults who were the worst offenders. Once I showed those who were being victimized how to stand up against the bullies it changed the dynamics.

So yes, I do know about shunning and it can be an effective tool when used appropriately.

As far as rap music is concerned it isn't my personal choice but there is some really good rap out there. The musical Hamilton is a prime example.

My brother became a JW about 20 years ago and immediately avoided the entire family because we would not join the "Church". To this day he will not go to any holiday celebration (loves getting presents though) and seldom even calls to say Hi. We have all accepted his new found "Family" and really do not care anymore....he has become pretty much shunned for shunning everyone else.

Kudos to you for standing up for what you believe in and supporting your family who was being hurt. You're right - shunning is mental bullying and would be so painful for those who feel such total rejection, particularly from family members whom they always loved....or at least liked.

How can people get so sucked into this brain-washing and go along w/shunning their own loved ones? I know.........stupid question.

What about "shunning" family members who were vocal and involved in the Westboro Baptist Church calling for the murdering of all LGTBs and all US soldiers for the USA allowing LGTBs to live? Would that shunning equally be wrong?

Yeah, JW's don't celebrate any holiday or even birthdays. At times I'd work w/a JW, a co-worker would have a b'day, we'd have a cake for her and JW wasn't around, but next day she'd be in lunch room to help eat up remaining cake.....

My biggest gripe about them was they refused to accept a blood transfusion to save a life. One time when I worked at the Red Cross, I was visiting w/Gail and Lynn and mentioned blood donations to Lynn, the JW, not knowing their tho'ts about it. She told me they don't believe in blood donations 'b/c blood is precious'....well yeah, blood is precious b/c it can save lives.....

At that time, Kurt, her now-shunned grandson, was a little boy and Lynn always adored him. I really avoid saying anything to someone about their faith that they might take offensively, but that day I very tactfully asked her "Lynn, let me ask you something. If Kurt had a bad accident and lost blood and only a blood transfusion could save his life, would you want him to have one?" She clammed up, didn't say a word, so I let it go.....

Bulletin board. Back before the internet, people would call bulletin boards using phones/modems. The bulletin boards themselves were very similar to internet forums.

I find it very telling that Religions are usually followed until inconvenient or desires set in. There are a lot of devout theists that are hated by their chosen Gods.

Actually it was the mind games that were mental bullying.

Shunning was my own idea to protect myself from the harm that it was doing to those I loved.

It was only after I found out how to stop the mind games that I ceased shunning them and returned to put an end to their games.

What you are talking about in the OP is that the "family" is shunning an individual which is the reverse of what I described.

As far as the person being "shunned" by the family in question is concerned that might just be the best thing that has ever happened to him if he takes the opportunity to find new friends and builds a new life for himself.

The WBC cockroaches are all in on it together....one big, sick, twisted family who take enjoyment in publicly mocking and ridiculing people they don't agree w/and harassing the families of the deceased soldiers.

I'd heard that a few of the WBC family members left that snake pit, one of the women apologizing to those she had hurt and if she shunned the family she left behind, good for her....

I don't recall any action from the WBC since their daddy and founder, Fred Phelps went to hell........

Absolutely! That's exactly what his aunt Gail and I hope he does. He's 21, lives on his own and we hope he just bites the bullet and moves on w/his life and be happy. If he can do that, then his family did him a huge favor by shunning him over rap music - leave the cult behind and he will become an independent thinker......and he has his Aunt Gail and other family cheering him on, so he's not all alone.

There is an old saw about being not being able to pick your family so you should only be judged by the friends you have. Music is a great basis for forming friendships and at 21 his life is full of promise.

I wish him, his Aunt Gail and you all the best for the future.

Thank you. Kurt has always been a likeable guy, even as a little kid, so as long as he doesn't let this shunning crap pull him down, he should be ok and he has Gail, me rooting for him. I can imagine suddenly being shunned by family & church members can really knock the props out from under a person....so they're left stunned and shunned.

When someone is born and raised in a religion, culture - it's the only life they know and for many it would be very hard to turn their back on it permanently.......hopefully, it won't be for Kurt.

Just let him know that you have his back and will be there for him if he needs anyone. After all it is people that matter, not dogma. In the final reckoning all anyone really leaves behind in this world are in the memories of those who knew and loved them. If they have fond memories of you and the love you had for them then nothing else is relevant.

I was thinking the same thing..........poor taste in music. And to be honest, they lyrics are very disturbing and destructive to those of faith. It promotes Hedonism, so I can understand why they oppose it.
I read an article somewhere that Mormons work in casinos. They say they are in the world but not of the world. They allow these things but they have them zoned off away from their neighborhoods.

You're right - rap is poor taste in music, but that's what most young people listen to. The fact is, Kurt is 21 yrs old and should be his choice what music he listens to in his privacy...it's not offending anyone else. Didn't Jehovah Witness PRINCE play and SELL rap music? Yeah, I believe he did. That's why he ended up filthy rich.... and that's all that matters to these religions that preach 'kindness, compassion and understanding'......

Grew up in a very religious family and never saw anything organized like that. People would look at or treat you differently for one reason or another, but that kind of "organic shunning" let's call it is far from unique to religion. I've been shunned for saying that I don't buy into modern feminism. People today just are willing to shun people for the smallest slights - and wonder why this is a lonely generation.
