Some movies just don't age well.

I remember episode 1 of series 1 of Dr Who when it was shown by the BBC - I was hooked and stayed hooked. And I love the new versions.

LOL, I had such a crush on Sara Conner. I agree with you about the first Terminator movie. But sadly for me the special effects are seriously showing their age.

Oh ya, good example of a 80's time capsule flick. John Hughes made great movies that captured teenage angst perfectly. Truly timeless.

Good point. Time will tell. Heck, 20 years from now entertainment may all be virtual reality simulators that are like the halo deck in Star Trek.

LOL OK, but just because you have a tank as an avatar. To this day Terminator is a great movie, but effects are really showing their age. I can say that I hope they never do a remake of it though. The remakes of classic 80's movies as of late are atrocious... that and the 80's Terminator is just classic Arnold!

The thing to remember is just because they look dated now doesn't mean they weren't thinking, "Wow, this will still look real 30 years from now!"

I like the director's decision, only woman can save the world.

Well Metropolis wasn't really the first. The first commonly agreed science fiction film is Voyage to the Moon in 1902 - There are stray fun stuff as far back as 1897 - With the sausage machine.

I am a big fan of Morodo's version - made the film very accessible to a younger audience. And I wonder if the interest that version created led to so much lost footage being discovered in subsequent years. I think as of 2006 or 7 the film is now considered complete to its original 3 hour running time

As a rule I hate remakes, but there are a few I like. Terminator could be decent if done right. Hard to imagine anyone else playing that part though.

On the other hand, I personally preferred the remake of Total Recall to the original.

    Spaceballs is the superior film.

Well, in general, spaceballs is your personal tragedy.

I really did not like the remake. Can't put my finger on exactly why though. Perhaps it was just too much a diversion from the original. I did like the new Red Dawn... thought it was passable, good movie but nowhere near as good as the original. I really had to try extra hard to suspend disbelieve when I saw the North Koreans rolling into town on Humvees though. And the scene right after the groups narrow escape from the NKA shows them out in the open at night huddled around a nice bright campfire.

Spaceballs was a silly comedy. Because of this I think the cheesy dialog goes hand in hand with the hokey effects. Because of this I think Spaceballs will be a timeless movie.

The premise for the remake of Total Recall was just stupid. You have the resources to build a tunnel through the center of the Earth but not enough to build an underground city?

I am with you on Footloose. I was not a big fan of the original... I am not much of an dancer... but none the less it was a good one viewing movie. I think the new Footloose speaks to the new generation and not my generation.

Didn't watch it and now am VERY glad that I did not. The original was based on a short story by Phillip K Dick and because of that had a solid Sci Fi underpinning.

I would however, like to see a remake of "Logan's Run" BUT and only BUT if they can do it with a good story line and that means hiring good writers instead of the usual hollywood hacks

Blade Runner - now THAT is a timeless movie!!

Logans Run done with the same style as Blader Runner would exceptional. The original novel is a great source document - Would like to see someone do Damnation Alley as well - especially with modern CGI a lot of the imagery could be brought to life

remakes are generally terrible. The generally involve some tedious involvement of a present day issue and some absurd concepts that idiotic producers insist on.

I think your right, some movies you watch them and say that was a good movie, then you never give it a thought or want to seek it out to view it again. Then theres some movies that never get old, one such movie for me is the Magnificent Seven, I saw it in a movie theatre when it was just released in the early 60s and Ive watched it again and again. Another movie that grabbed me like that was Donovans Reef with the classic never ending brawl between Lee Marvin and John Wayne.

Old Doc Smith had some of the BEST aliens and some of the wildest planets! What about Larry Niven's Ringworld series? Or one of Heinlein's eg Moon is a Harsh Mistress? Trouble is that unless you have good writers you are going to end with crap. A lot of Heinlein's stuff in particular is more about the interaction of the characters and exploration of societal norms than it is about the setting. James White's wonderful Space hospital with it's weird wild and funny aliens - James Schmitz and his beautifully crafted worlds

Add to that list David Brin and I could go on......

A few years back I was watching Ben Hur with some friends. They stood up and walked out of the room because they could see the wires the spears were attached to as they flew through the air. It didn't bother me as movie is from the 1950s. It might bother me in a movie made today.

Some old movies stand the test of time very well.

I am an avid fan of Charlie Chaplin. His genius will live forever. He played in a movie we saw last night. It was a murder comedy....The guy still cracks me up.
