Hey folks... if you want to see the coolest stuff linux has to offer... SCALE is this weekend. It is their 11th year. Top nerds will be there... there is just too much stuff to list there. Everything from beginning linux training to genius level architecture discussions... gaming... free open source projects will be featured there... including the home automation platform I devel for. Anyway if you like computers, you cannot help but have fun. http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale11x You can check out the schedule for an idea of what will there to see if something specific peaks your interest.
This isn't spam btw... that project I have something to do with is free open source... and I am not going to be there... it's just a cool nerd thing happening a lot of people I know are going to.
Too bad I'm nowhere near California. I'm getting ready to switch to Linux, using it for the first time. I'm going to be doing recording and video editing for my band and will be using Ubuntu Studio for the low latency kernel and multimedia software bundle (which looks pro). But I'm looking forward to all the other things I've heard about concerning Linux as well. Right now I'm just waiting on my new computer to arrive, then I can start taking advantage of all the badass free stuff. (*)(*)(*)(*) Microsoft.
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/top5-linux-video-editing-system-software/ I like kdenlive for simple editing and cinelerra for more advanced editing. All free.
Used to be able to install Ubuntu with a KDE desktop... ... don't know if ya still can... ... they took out the dial-up program a couple versions ago.
Ubuntu packaged with KDE is Kubuntu. Ubuntu has a gnome3/unity desktop default. You can, of course, install Ubuntu and then install kde-desktop and use either or. As for dialup, if it is not natively available anymore, it can certainly still be installed... of course you would have to drop it on a thumbdrive or something first, as you would not be connected till it was available... but... I cannot imagine them doing such a thing. It should be native. Or... maybe not... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto
