I thought Switzerland was suppossedly "politicall neutral".
I am surprised they are playing politics with this issue.

Is this not an infringement on free speech? If there is an actual trial, would the accused have a chance to prove that the events did not actually constitute "genocide"? Could not many many events in history be considered "genocide"? The French Revolution was a genocide against the nobility.

I just don't get genocide denial. For example, the history of Europe is filled with conflicts, wars, and genocides. The only sane way to deal with that involves three steps.

    1. Accept the follies of the past as a reality.
    2. Agree that old conflicts mustn't continue forever.
    3. Build a better future.

The European Union is not perfect at all, but its very existence is remarkable when compared to the usual human pettiness. It suffices to go back 60 years to the last huge war. A hundred to the next one and there are countless more earlier. Europeans know all this happened, but they are for the most part smart enough to just get over it. I just don't get why some are trying to defend all the actions of their ancestors. Sometimes those ancestors did great things, but at other times they just messed up. Why is it so hard to admit that? After all, you can always add, "but our generation can do better. We will do better."

Unfortunately, certain events in history have become very politicised.
The interrpretation of the past becomes relevant to present politics. Governments do not have a right to force a mainstream view of historical events, especially when it has political intanglements. Holocaust denial can be more a matter of opinion than denial of the verifiable facts.

I for example do not believe the "holocaust" against the jews was very different from all the other attrocities happening during that time. The Russians and Americans held plenty of racial hatred also and did not have a problem killing civilians through starvation in prison camps, just like how most of the jews were killed.
