Take for example, last night this exchange: What are they hiding? How can we trust them? Mike Pence: (28:03) No, you’ve refused to answer the question. Joe Biden has refused to answer the question. So I think the American people would really like to know if Judge Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed at the Supreme Court of the United States. Are you and Joe Biden, if somehow you win this election, going to pack the Supreme Court to get your way? Kamala Harris : (28:18) I’m so glad we went through a little history lesson. Let’s do that a little more. In 1864- Mike Pence: (28:25) No, I’d like you to answer the question. Susan Page: (28:25) Yes, she’s- Kamala Harris : (28:26) Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking, I’m speaking. Okay. In 1864, one of the, I think political heroes, certainly the President, I assume you also, Mr. Vice President, is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was up for reelection and it was 27 days before the election. And a seat became open on the United States Supreme Court. Abraham Lincoln’s party was in charge, not only of the White House, but the Senate. But Honest Aid said, “It’s not the right thing to do. The American people deserve to make the decision about who will be the next president of the United States. And then that person can select who will serve for a lifetime on the highest court of our land.” And so Joe and I are very clear: the American people are voting right now and it should be their decision about who will serve on this most important body for a lifetime. Susan Page: (29:29) Thank you. Senator Harris- Mike Pence: (29:30) People, Susan, are voting right now. They’d like to know if you and Joe Biden are going to pack the Supreme Court if you don’t get your way in this nomination. Kamala Harris : (29:39) Let’s talk about packing- Mike Pence: (29:40) You, once again, gave a non-answer. Joe Biden gave a non-answer.
Trump was elected in part to appoint Supreme Court Justices. I am not sure why she wants to do it again. Also, if Justices were to be elected, they would be elected instead of appointed.
They are not stupid. If they answer the question half-way truthfully they will lose many many votes and they don't want to do that. So lying and dodging with no reservation is the order of the day. There was a recent poll where a large majority did not want any court packing, and, oddly, of the Democrats who went along with court packing, about half said additional seats should be distributed evenly between parties.
Perhaps the Democrats are smart. They will focus on what is happening to people now, the Republicans create an issue based on what might happen and then with a few days to go in the campaign they say "no we never planned to do that" leaving them holding the bag. Do Americans deserve details on the President's health or his taxes?
She's not there to answer Pence's questions. She's there to answer the moderator's questions. Unlike Pence who spent the whole debate thanking the moderator for her questions about real issues, and then refusing to answer them.
as soon as SC justices answer the questions about roe vs wade... why do they refuse - the people have a right to know yep, if dems have the votes, we will raise the number of seats - republican stole the SC, we will steal it back just like Republicans pull their stunts "because" the rules allowed it, dems can do what the rules allow to
Harris said Biden was transparent. But we know Harris makes up things. Even made up a story about Honest Abe.
Not really. She is there to inform the voters. If there were no voters, the debates would not be held. Whether Wallace or Pence asks it, voters deserves to know.
BOTH candidates avoided answering questions. Welcome to politics. Personally, I think it’s a detrimental thing for either party to be able to appoint a 6-3 Court, just as I think it’s bad for one party to hold the House, Senate, and White House at the same time. One Party rule is the stuff of Horror stories in history.
Your points are good ones -- but -- people aren't dying to come here because we have a horrible system of government. Thank goodness the pendulum swings back and forth.
It is totally irrelevant who asks the question. It is a question which the voters have a right to know. Especially, since they refused to answer.
