    @Golem

I can agree with you in principle, but the tendency seen in the 'unwashed masses' to adore some political leader to the point of 'deification' is not unique to those who have Conservative values!

Indeed, the adulation heaped on "Messiah" Obama puts him in that same general category, would you not agree? After he was elected, the mainstream media was full of stories about how many in this country expressed tearful gratitude to their concept of God that such a miracle had occurred -- and naturally enough, they prayed ardently for Obama's success. There is nothing abnormal about this kind of thing, is there? Or is it only to be feared when some political figure that you don't like ascends into great power...?! Be honest.... :juggle:

The tendency in the masses to fixate on one 'strong-man' has been observed for many centuries, for as the famous Roman Senator and historian, Cassius Dio, observed dryly (with my emphases):

"Democracy, indeed, has a fair-appearing name and conveys the impression of bringing equal rights to all through equal laws, but its results are seen not to agree at all with its title. Monarchy, on the contrary, has an unpleasant sound, but is a most practical form of government to live under. For it is easier to find a single excellent man than many of them, and if even this seems to some a difficult feat, it is quite inevitable that the other alternative should be acknowledged to be impossible; for it does not belong to the majority of men to acquire virtue."

But then Dems have been doing that for going on a hundred years now you worship at the altar of more government more spending and less freedom religious and other wise. The article is simply more evidence of the leftist continuing war against free speech and free people. When you take religious fervor to war or political rallies as the left has been doing ever since the term 1st came to be the fervor of the opposition mounts in opposition.

Free will is a theory, as is the concept of a god. The Christian conservative version of god I was taught was definitely authoritarian… obey god or else! Let’s assume we have free will though. If so I can choose to disobey god but at my own peril. At a fundamental level that is how authoritarianism works… fall in line or else.

I am glad to see we agree that government and religion shouldn’t mix. I wish more saw it that way.

I agree with your last paragraph too. Although if we are not a democracy, what are we if other than a representative republic which has many of the same pitfalls of a direct democracy?

Free will is foundational to most versions of Christianity, conservative or otherwise. The statement "Obey God or else!" is in fact an affirmation of free will. We can choose not to obey.

That assumes we have free will which is currently unsettled science. I thank you for your response though as it has helped to broaden my perspective.

The same is true for government, moreso in fact.

As Christians, we believe that the price for disobedience will be paid in the after life. Disobeying the laws of government will result in consequences in this life.

In this country it's UNIQUE to Trump. NO relevant politician in our history has ever attempted to "deify" themselves. The rest of your post are just unsubstantiated right-wingnut talking points which you don't even attempt to substantiate. Simply projection. For that reason they are of little worth.

I see the problem, I think.
    See, christians worship one God.
    They don't worship any mortals.
So when a rally, or event starts or ends with a prayer christians know exactly who they are worshiping: God.

When a non believer hears prayer, or worship, or the pledge of allegiance or the anthem they panic because they don't worship one God and can easily be fooled by unfamiliar shows of respect.

Which is why nonbelievers are triggered by a Trump rally.
And why christians laugh at the rediculous overreacting of heathens.

From the Left's perspective, the problem is, Christians don't worship government.

You wouldn't even acknowledge the worshipful adulation piled at the feet of "Messiah" Obama by his acolytes, stooges, and other fawning liberals? From YOU I expected more scope and objectivity.

I don't want Trump in the White House again, either -- but my reasons are because he's a liar and a high rolling economics con-artist... not because he's a "Messiah", like Obama was extolled to be! 8)

What crap are you making up? NEVER did an Obama rally look like a religious service, as Trump's do. NEVER did Obama do anything to encourage something of the sort.

You are on your own. I'm not saying you are part of a cult, but you ARE following a creep who is supported by a blind cult that would follow him even if he sexually assaulted women, even if he gave our nation's secrets to our enemy... even if he stood in the middle of 5th Ave and SHOT somebody. That's who you are following. No amount of projection is going to dilute that fact.

You misunderstand much, and , yes, I really did expect better of you. Much better... because you aren't stupid.

Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that we never see Donald Trump back in the Oval Office -- or another creature like Barack Obama, either! But we will, and the Democrat Party will make sure we do, from now on.....

I don't think I misunderstood. You compared regular candidates (Obama... or whoever you want), to a deity wannabe like Trump who gathers his "faithful" to pray TO him. The only reason to obfuscate the two can only be to try justify the insane actions by the creep.

Did you read the OP? Have you EVER seen a presidential candidate saying things like those? Especially one who is clearly not even a Christian.

No! Read the OP and show anything like that in ANY presidential rally.

    From the link in #89:

COLUMBIA. S.C. and MANCHESTER, N.H. – In a giant Sunday afternoon rally suffused with Christian – and at times messianic – rhetoric, Barack Obama made his largest-scale pitch to black and white Democrats of South Carolina, the third and most devout presidential primary state. . . .

Not much use in pursuing this with you, unfortunately. There are two good things that we can derive from the overall situation, though: Trump is almost certainly not (NOT) going to win the election, and, it is a certainty guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States that Obama will not ever be president again, either.

Besides, consider how very few voters there are who actually would deify Donald Trump (even if they could). Do you really imagine that in 2024 there are enough religious zealots of any kind left who would even rationally believe that they could do that?!

Epilogue: When we all wake up on the morning of November 6, 2024, we'll find that, once again, the United States has elected another 'woke', socialist-wanna-be Democrat to the White House. Which one? Well, that's the only real 'unknown' at this point.... Trump will go home (if he still has one after being bankrupted in the courts), sulk, piss-and-moan, and play golf the rest of his life....

I'm not talking about how a reporter describes it. I'm talking about what is said. And ALSO, mentioning God or Christ is absolutely normal. What the OP shows goes WAY beyond that. Trump is basically asking his "flock".

This is nonsense. It didn't even merit a response. But... there you have it.

Any who would ignore facts like him having been proven a sexual abuser, or having tortured children, or having stolen national secrets and attempted to hide them or destroy them, or inciting an insurrection and attacks of innocent people (which he does to this day)... or ANY of the many crimes any moderately informed person is aware... (and on and on).... can only be explained by cultish devotion to an individual. I see no difference between that and "deifying" him. Even though the behavior in his rallies is quite explicit.

I suggest that you are blind to your own prejudices.

“I give all praise and honor to God,” Obama began. “Look at the day the Lord has made.”

Obama’s wife, Michelle, opened the rally with a description of her husband that could, at moments, have been a description of Jesus Christ.

“We need a leader who’s going to touch our souls. Who’s going to make us feel differently about one another. Who’s going to remind us that we are one another’s keepers. That we are only as strong as the weakest among us,” she said, echoing biblical passages.

Winfrey also touched on Christian themes that had not been highlighted in Iowa.

“It’s amazing grace that brought me here,” she began, adding that she was “stepping out of my pew” - television – to engage in politics.

It isn’t enough to tell the truth, Winfrey said. “We need politicians who know how to be the truth.”

Winfrey also recalled a story from “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” a 1974 film based on Ernest Gaines’ 1971 novel.

In Winfrey’s telling, the protagonist – an old woman who had survived slavery and the Civil War – would ask every child, “Are you the one? Are you the one?”

“I do believe I do today we have the answer to Miss Pittman’s question – it’s a question that the entire nation is asking – is he the one?” Winfrey said. “South Carolina – I do believe he’s the one.”

According to one academic discussion of the book by Christopher Mulvey, a professor at University of Winchester in the United Kingdom, the passage continues to ask whether the child is the one who will “carry part of our cross,” a “messianic figure.”. . .

It's also explainable as coldly calculating tactical voting by a group (evangelical Christians) who see themselves as under siege and are willing to overlook personal shortcomings to get the protection they seek.
