The political cartoon by Scott & Borgman cuts through art and culture to link today with a serious national problem. I support the March. I support the art. I support the kids and those who support them.
I support the kids in that nobody is like "I hate children!". I disagree with some of them immeasurably, as well as their view of the prospects going forward with gun control. #neveragain is a concept which will lead to immeasurable suppression of freedoms if taken seriously. No measure can ensure never again. Even in the UK there are shootings and bombings. In order to ensure never again you'll have to enslave people into ADX Florence style prisons.
In the wake of the horrific Feb. 14 mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama sent the students a heartfelt, handwritten note, expressing how inspired they were by the determination and resilience of student protesters. The first couple wrote: We wanted to let you know how inspired we have been by the resilience, resolve and solidarity that you have all shown in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. Not only have you supported and comforted each other, but you’ve helped awaken the conscience of the nation, and challenged decision-makers to make the safety of our children the country’s top priority. Throughout our history, young people like you have led the way in making America better. There may be setbacks; you may sometimes feel like progress is too slow in coming. But we have no doubt you are going to make an enormous difference in the days and years to come, and we will be there for you. It is a sentiment that Barack Obama has expressed before, tweeting out just days after the shooting that “young people have helped lead all our great movements,” adding that “we’ve got your backs.” I agree with them completely.
I am setting the naysayers aside today. Good for these kids. May they be successful. May they be protected.
Of course, that doesn't change that NeverAgain is an unrealistic and dangerous goal. Where does it end? If UK style bans on most firearms were implemented and there's a school shooting, do you need to ban Nerf guns? It ignores that the issue is about finding an agreeable mediation between gun rights and public safety, in favor of absolutism. Which both sides are guilty of, but it's still worth calling out. Never Again, if taken seriously, means a massive police state, going far beyond gun control.
"THE PUERILE PUPPET PARADE COMES TO TOWN....FOR A DAY" Whoever thinks that this is a "kids movement" should remember that there's a reason that P.T. Barnum made his fortune in America where: "There's a sucker born every minute". "The Kids" are simply fresh & gullible new Window Dressing for the same Gun Ban organizations that have been around for decades but come out of hibernation at the smell of fresh blood. Most of these easily manipulated, attention hungry puerile puppets are not interested in lowering our homicide rate or making the schools any safer. Their marching orders from the same old Gun Ban organizations are to push for more failed gun control. I say "failed gun control" because the adult FBI cites that there are more guns in circulation than ever before in our nation's history. However our homicide rate is at a 51 year low with homicides plummeting by 49% AFTER the Clinton era Assault Weapons Ban expired.(1) Therefore, the guns are not the problem but facts have never been a concern for a movement driven by emotion, sound bites the exploitation of grisly tragedies. Simple minds have always focused on simple solutions to the complex & costly problems America faces like fixing our broken mental health system, effectively making schools more secure & finding the root cause of America's violence. We are certainly no closer to solutions to those real problems because a few thousand adult funded & organized scripted young dupes refuse to let go of their 15 minutes of fame. "FBI: US Homicide Rate at 51-Year Low" https://mises.org/wire/fbi-us-homicide-rate-51-year-low Public Unaware that Homicide Rates Have Fallen EXCERPT "As Pew has reported in recent years, in fact, the American public is "unaware" that the homicide rate in the United States has fallen by 49 percent over the past twenty years. And while Pew doesn't report on it, it's also a safe bet that the public is also unaware that homicide rates have collapsed as total gun ownership in the United States has increased significantly."CONTINUED
The poor ignorant kids... Without guns, you would not have the freedom to demonstrate to confiscate our guns. The patriot will use their guns and give their lives to defend the rights of the liberals...so the liberals can demonstrate and have free speech to work to confiscate our guns. In many countries if you open your mouth you are dead. What separates America from the rest is we have a second amendment. Sadly, with Democratic liberals, their view is the only acceptable way. If they don't get their way then they resort to violence to force it on the conservative. Kids / libs / Dems...the 2A is not negotiable...now nor ever.
I also would like to mention that so many protests and movements in the past were started by younger people.
My wife, an educator of ten years, wants to quit teaching because she didn't sign up to be a meat shield or a soldier. The refusal of our leaders to address this issue in a meaningful manner is deafening.
It absolutely is negotiable. You don't have a right to own a gun if you can't have the responsibility to maintain the right as well as the rights of others. The only thing non negotiable here is the lives of our children, and any demagoguery by fox news and limpballs fans won't be booked around me.
We've failed at that for 40 years. In many policies. Maybe it's time we stop electing half dead baby boomers already teetering on the edge of death and start electing some new, young people with fresh ideas.
The tools are just being used by the gun control people. Remember Cindy, OWS, BLM?? You don't hear anything from them In 6mo no one will care who they are
I'm not so sure about that cartoon though. I'm familiar with Jim Borgman's work - he's not exactly at Kevin McGuire level, but he's fairly good at drawing emotional expressions. Now those kids, especially the ones with the highlighted colors are showing no expression at all. They're just THERE. In fact, outside of a few kids with open mouths presumably saying something, the whole picture is of a bunch of kids who aren't that enthusiastic about being there. They have the right signs and buttons, but their hearts aren't in it - and Borgman clearly knows what he's drawing and what he wants to convey in his art. Is it possible that he's actually saying that these kids really don't care about their protest today - on a Saturday - and would really rather be at home? That they're at this march because someone else expected them to be there? Because looking at their expressions, that's what I'm taking away from it.
Absolutely. Not many people know that, but Canada, UK, Australia, Norway and all other western countries that have tough gun laws are all fascist states. Even worse than North Korea. Even though US is by far the country where Mass Shooting occurs most often in the world, we will not let young people deprive us of our freedoms because they do not want to be shot by lunatics at school.
Before you take pride, know what it is you're supporting. "Common sense gun control" is just a nice way of saying "we're going to suppress your rights". So lets use this approach and rephrase some of the other great suppression of human rights throughout history. Don't call it slavery, call it "common sense labor initiatives". Don't call it minority voter suppression, call it "common sense election security". Don't call it forced Native American relocation, call it "common sense land allocation". Don't call it a Holocaust, call it "common sense ethnic redistribution". And these astroturfing driven protests are nothing more than the latest example of bigots rationalizing their bigotry with language that resonates as pseudo-logical.
Fresh ideas? First off, stripping people of their rights isn't a "fresh idea" ...its a sin as old as time. Secondly, these ideas aren't their own ...these dumbass pups are just the tools of the professional leftist bigot machine.
First of all since when is a Kid { David Hogg }a spokesman for a huge political issue such as our 2nd Amendment. And since when can he be allowed to freely use the " F " word to make his case. The " f " word not in regards to the shooter at his High school but at Parents,in general and the Governor of his state. And since when are those on left allowed to congratulate this super pencil-neck little monster as he traipse around as if some Spokesman. Because that is how the Left rolls.Whether - Occupy Wall Street - then converted into - BlackLivesMatter - and how about a President { Obama } using the word " TeaBag*er " when making unrighteous comments about the Tea Party. Since when ? Since about the time Democrats and Liberals alike no longer thought about Free discourse of Ideas. They turned almost on a dime into little Dictators or Authoritarians.Their Way or the Highway.24/7. That is not how the United States was built or became a Superpower. We are strong as a Nation because we Tolerate different opinions. Not one size fits all. Like this little Hogg Monster Gun grabber could find a shirt to fit off the rack.
Like Canada, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Australia... All places that have severe gun laws and where people are regularly executed for their political opinions.
