Consider the Great Earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The event shocked Europe at the time. As described in the article below, the aftershocks could be felt in Finland. 100,000 people are estimated to have died as a result of the quake. It struck a church on All Saints Day. November first 1755. The event changed the way many Europeans viewed the world. This event catalyzed the enlightenment and suddenly people looked to natural causes for events like this. Immanuel Kant attempted to explain the natural causes of the Earthquake and, although his explanation was almost entirely incorrect, he was the first to attempt such an explanation. Seismology is thought to have originated with the event as the article explains. Think about your own beliefs. In our lifetime we saw Hurricane Katrina. At the time did you explain it as a judgement from god? Did you think of the cause as being natural forces? TLDR; An earthquake raises the question of what causes disasters: nature, or God. https://allthatsinteresting.com/lisbon-earthquake https://blogs.scientificamerican.co...-of-lisbon-wraith-of-god-or-natural-disaster/ PS Feel free to go off topic. PSS Disaster* lol
I suppose one could argue that God created the earth to have earthquakes so even natural disasters are according to his will.
I am not god's spokesperson. I was just simply pointing out that the two concepts don't have to be mutually exclusive in a person's eyes.
