The shaming images that show where our iPhones, laptops and Tesla cars REALLY come from: The truth about the Congolese mines where kids are paid $2-a-day to dig for cobalt

Children aren't spared the strains of manual labor in the 'artisanal' mines of the DRC. Above, a child carries a sack of rocks in Kapata, southwest of Kolwezi
Children endure brutal conditions of cobalt mining in the Congo

Barefoot children covered in chemicals, endlessly smashing open rocks for $2-a-day; exhausted new mothers with their babies strapped to them, sifting through nets of rocks in the hopes of finding the precious cobalt.

Those are among the powerful images obtained by Siddharth Kara over the last several years in the Katanga region, that can be shared now ahead of the publication of his new book - Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives.

'This is blood diamonds multiplied by a thousand – diamonds aren’t toxic. And you buy a diamond once, maybe twice, in your life, whereas western society can’t function for more than 24 hours without devices that rely on cobaltSiddharth Kara, author of Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives

The book paints a damning picture of the desperate demand for cobalt in the West, and the deadly effects of it among African families. …

the environmental damage, primitive conditions, exposure to dangerous chemicals, and child labor here that goes into electric battery making. The images that don’t post here but are available at the source makes one wonder what these people will do to others to advance their green control agenda. Too many on the green left don’t care at all about the slave/prison labor in China assembling the product or the child labor, toxic poisoning, primitive conditions, and environmental damage to people of color in other countries as long as you get your product and as long as American workers doing it much more safely and environmentally sound don’t get high paying blue collar jobs here doing it.

There is precious little or nothing from the left condemning the abuses of people and children there and the toxic effects on the people or the damage to the local environment there and slave/prison labor in China in order to have electronic products and cars. The sanctimonious bicoastal secular progressive elites would rather that than to see Americans mine the stuff safely and assemble the batteries, solar panels, and turbine blades here.

I am not sure why you are calling out the left on this. It is not like we have a bunch of republicans in congress desperately trying to fix this issue and it is the democrats that are the road block. Who on the republican side is leading this issue? Also this is not an issue that has sprung out overnight. Even just looking at the iphone we are on model 14. I am sure there are many politicians on both sides that have been using iphones and products made by these processes for decades if not more.

You think all these billion dollar corps are ran by liberals?
Republicans want those same conditions here for American workers.

You should have sent that line to Biden so he could have used it right after he accused republicans of wanting to gut social security and Medicare.

Here’s the left’s hypocrisy, they want to spend hundreds of billions to save these people from global warming yet they sit by and say nothing when what you see in those pictures happens. Maybe you can get them to organize a union, I’m sure AOC and Sanders will be all for it.

Maybe write a sternly worded letter to apple, Google, and other companies to stop doing business with slave labor countries. Democrats are still in charge right now, right? I know Biden said only a dictator uses executive orders, but he seems to have forgotten about that since he’s made so many, but maybe this time he can squeeze in another. I’m sure Google won’t mind.

the dirty truth about excessive foreign imports and excessive foreign outsourcing

Trump could have stopped this by only giving those huge corp tax cuts to those that did not do these things

Whoa…are you defending/justifying Chinese slave labor? Maybe it’s one of those Chinese cultural norms Biden drones on about. We would make those keyboards here if we couldn’t import them from China. You got a problem with that, or are you afraid unions would make those keyboards too expensive?

How horrible....if you ignore that the per capita income in the Congo is less than $600 per year. A child would have to work 300 days to hit that. In the US a child would have to make $235 a day to hit the per capita income in 300 days which makes it a little better than $29.00/per hour in relative income. I am not advocating for child labor nor love the conditions some work under, but from purely an economic perspective, these kids are doing it because it pays well compared to alternatives available to them.

It's you liberals by and large pushing this green agenda that creates the demand for all of these batteries for these stupid little electric cars. Little novelty toy cars.

Like a lot of liberal ideas they sound great on paper until those ideas have to mesh with reality and that's when the problems start.

If everybody starts driving these electric cars where's all the batteries going to come from?

At least grown men extract and process oil.

Every little electric car should say powered by the tears of slave labor children.

Moronic statement on your part - I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of the OP in pretending he wasn't participating in buying
equipment made by Chinese child labor and it was just "the other guys" who did so.

Looks about as miserable as the industrial revolution in the west some years ago. I'm thankful my ancestors endured what they did so posterity could have it better.

OH just stop with the "holier than thou" crap.
China is the LARGEST producer of lead in the world by a large margin - the lead you dudes love to shoot a bottles and cans on weekends - lead produced in mines dug by the same child labor - Ammunition sales that have increased ten fold in the last 20 years. Every time you shoot a bullet, it's brought
to you by children slaves in China.

This is definitely something that needs more attention and activism. This is basically the real 'modern day slavery' the racebaitors go on and on about. But I dunno if trying to shame 'the left' about it is a productive way to go. The only time I ever heard anyone say anything about this was a guy on Joe Rogan's podcast quite recently. I sure as hell didn't know about it before that. Its not like anyone on the right is smashing their phone batteries in protest either...

Oh bull. Do you have any idea how much gallium is mined right here in America? Where are the second largest producer.

And we're not the holier than thou ones.... That would be you guys saying that electric cars are going to save the planet. Do you have a clue how many other industrial products use lead as well?

We are not the ones trying to browbeat everyone into "saving the planet" by trying to force electric cars on everyone.

It's you liberals that think we're all supposed to start driving electric cars. How big do you think the battery in electric car is compared to the cell phone in your hand? How many cell phone batteries do you think could be made from one electric car battery?
