'Toward a More Perfect Union': We can teach ugly truths and beauty of America

It’s for this reason that my friend of many years Tim Goeglein has written, Toward a More Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story (Fidelis, 2022). As he notes in the book’s introduction, making that case is imperative for our future as a republic. “Even if students escape high school with some semblance of grounding in history and civics,” he says, “they are virtually guaranteed to receive an onslaught of anti-American venom when they enter college.”

Sadly, this verdict is all too true. Goeglein’s book documents the disturbing decline in the knowledge young Americans have of their country’s history and the distorted view of our past that too often accompanies it. Not only is this disappointing, but it is also dangerous. A lack of appreciation for our country’s moral foundations, political genius, and ongoing efforts to fulfill the promises of the Declaration of Independence breeds not just ingratitude but hostility.

As a case in point, Goeglein highlights the propagandist Howard Zinn, who for decades has sought to distort American history to advance his extreme Leftist ideology. Zinn’s most influential work, A People’s History of the United States, is not a corrective to a false account but a false account masquerading as a corrective…

…The facts of American history are, in themselves, remarkable. Although the Founders of our country were imperfect and did not always live up to the convictions they espoused, their record of courage and foresight has ennobled human dignity for nearly 250 years. …

Neither America nor her founders are or were perfect. As a nation of imperfect humanity, we made mistakes in our history. We teach about the imperfection, the short comings, and the mistakes. America though is not defined by her mistakes. We the people today will not be coerced into obsession with them nor picking at the scabs of them so that they may never heal.

 

America is an exceptional nation. She was founded by divine Providence. Our founding fathers were not perfect men but they were indeed very much a part of the enlightenment. They gave us what we had as a more perfect Union. Todays secular progressive left is trying to tear down, minimize, and guilt trip our past.

 

Name the country and I'll tell the left why they should hate it, that's when I'll be hit with a barrage of racist accusations.

 

Always striving to more perfectly mutually secure each other's rights, that's the AMERICAN way!

 

and today's conservative Republicans are trying to censor that which they don't want to recognize about our past.

You can always be sure XX is will post something that attacks "THE LEFT", and when he does, Steve and Zorro won't be far behind. None of them, including all Right Wing posters on this board can even define what them mean by "LEFT". LEFT is just a boggy man to fear and blame and attack for ALL the things they perceive as wrong. Even under a topic that is supposed to "celebrate" what's historically right with These United States the author can't help but take a shot at "Leftist ideology"; though he only alludes to some infraction but never quotes anything.

But they never explain why it's not the left that attacks everything our country has done, but the right does, right here on this board, EVERY day. I don't know how many times I've replied to such attacks by the right sticking up for the Greatness of my Country. Every time I do i get shot down because of America's perceived failures. It wasn't anyone from the "left" that attacked the most beautiful public building in the world and wiped the **** on it's walls.

My point is it's time to quit attacking and start trying to find a way to work together.

And just like the sun rising we can be sure whatever XX posts will be followed by an attack on the "secular left" that he couldn't define either. The truth is the Evangelical Right was represented at the Capitol on January 6th 2021, but not the secular left. IF the Evangelical Right every attained the power in OUR government they seek, they would make the Taliban look like school girls. No AmeriCAN would be safe in from the rein of terror they would unleash on ALL of U.S.

 

We know about our past already. We will not be guilt tripped over it or deny our good points or our exceptional nation status. We will not teach our kids CRT or 1619 and if we can’t get it out of our school we will go to a charter or private or home school. The CRT and 1619 America will be an alien nation to us and we will not dialogue or communists with those view points in our lives. If need be we will be two Americas as to how our kids get taught our history depending on what state they live in or what school district or type of school they attended.

 

- Before the election it was very common to see Right Winger's, on here, denigrating ANY and EVERYthing about These United States; you included.
- And have the most maladjusted kids on the planet.
- So much for THESE UNITED STATES.

Actually the truth is that we love America and put America first.

 

Was there ever since the initial diaspora from the Tower of Babel not long after the great global flood a time or place where one people group displaced or replaced the people living there besides here? Or did it happen everywhere all the time.

 

So yep "divine Providence" doesn't include the natives.

Republicans are going around destroying statues and renaming public buildings trying to erase the memories of historical figures? Really!

 

Naw, they just attacked OUR Capitol, tore up the furniture, walls AND, statues. And then pissed on the floors and wiped their **** on the walls for good measure.

 

So in other words I never denigrated America, only the 5th column among us mostly congregated in urban areas on the two ocean coasts.

 

You can quibble ALL you want, but your every post oozes with hate for more than half of all Americans. Which, IMHO, is the root of what's dragging ALL America down. I was raised to believe there is NO "5th column", no lefties or righties, no red or blue; ONLY AMERICAN's. If you want to see the face of what is wrong in my beloved country; go look in a mirror.
