Trump is a giant ignoramus. https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...McP9QLdZ3Q9qtfVZv20oqsrse5tvaFGKrIo84UPYw3hwg Q: Mr. President, do you have a message for Poland on the 80th anniversary of the Second World War? TRUMP: I do have a great message for Poland. And we have Mike Pence, our Vice President, is just about landing right now. And he is representing me. I look forward to being there soon. But I just want to congratulate Poland. It’s a great country with great people. We also have many Polish people in our country; it could be 8 million. We love our Polish friends. And I will be there soon. It's the standard non-specific gobbledygook you get when Trump has no clue. And when it comes to foreign affairs, he often has no clue. So you get this response, in which he congratulates Poland on the anniversary of getting invaded in a war that eventually killed 20% of its population. Trump was also asked about Colombia -- specifically, the decision by some leaders of the Marxist FARC rebel group to end a peace deal and resume fighting: Q: On Colombia, how do you feel about former FARC leader calling to return -- for return to war? TRUMP: Colombia, you said? Q: Yeah, on Colombia. Former leader of FARC. TRUMP: You’re talking about the country of Colombia? Q: Yeah, the country of Colombia. The -- TRUMP: Yeah. No, we have a great relationship. And they’re not doing badly. They have a problem because of the Venezuela. A lot of people are pouring in. But Colombia -- we’ve had a great relationship with Colombia. It's obvious that Trump has no idea what the reporter is asking about, despite the question coming a day-and-a-half after the FARC announcement. So again, he spouts off with non-specific boilerplate. This is Trump on the world stage. It's hugely embarassing, and it's harmful to our national security. Is it too much to ask that we have a president who is familiar with the world and educates himself on the things he needs to know?
That was the headline on the story I linked to. Notice that my point is "Trump is a giant ignoramus".
Trump says some stupid things. His opposition must see it as a challenge and try to "one up" him. He did not congratulate them on being invaded.
After the invasion and occupation by the National Socialist, as well as the Socialist of the USSR, I think the people of Poland deserve a huge congrats and honor for surviving those horrible regimes.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that Dirty Donnie doesn't have a clue what is really going on in the world. He's too busy playing the role of president of his party instead of his nation.
If Trump had followed that up with..."Turing couldn't have done it without you. Congrats!" my job would have hit the floor.
How do you figure? It's a bad headline, that's all. The piece itself makes the same point I did -- that when Trump is clueless, he resorts to generic boilerplate responses, which in circumstances like the Poland thing sound very, very odd. FYI, writers don't usually write their own headlines. So you sometimes get a disconnect between the headline and the article. And sometimes headlines are simply bad. It's not necessarily a sign of bias.
LOL... when you said that, here's what ran through my head Q: Mr. President, do you have a message for Poland on the 80th anniversary of the Second World War? A: Well, we'll see what happens....
Yeah headlines are often written by other than who wrote the article but I would think the author of the article would at least object to such blatant dishonesty. There's no way an honest person could come up with that headline for what DT said or an honest editor would allow that dishonest headline to be published.
Well, the OP failed the rules of Current Events and didn't paste the EXACT headline from the URL (unless the WaPo changed it)... It currently says: Trump congratulates Poland as it commemorates Nazi invasion That's a fact and a gaffe.... both indisputable facts...
Headlines are often written long after the reporter has gone home. And reporters DO object to headlines, but there's a reasonably high bar to changing them. Again, you are quick to see dishonesty when it's most likely just "headline writer had a bad day". It happens. When I worked in newspapers, there were multiple layers of editing. Reporter would write the story. Editor would edit it. Rim copy editor would edit story and write headline. Slot copy editor would edit story and check headline. But with newspaper staffs down to a fraction of their previous size, each story gets fewer checks, and each editor is editing FAR more stories. So more mistakes and sloppy work get published. This is life in newspapers today: Working at high speed through a queue of stories, with all of your mistakes immediately published for millions of people to see. Have some sympathy.
Sorry, didn't mean to imply you did something wrong (although I clearly did)... I just see that simple rule violated on here often, so I assume the worst... Regardless of the headline, Congratulations is not the correct response to the question Trump was asked... If he's not aware 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the invasion, that's on him...
Nothing in his response suggests that he is not aware of the anniversary. He just congratulates them on the anniversary for being a great nation. That is the message he has for them which IS the answer to the question.
= Gaffe If this was the anniversary of the founding of Poland (like our July 4th) congratulations would be appropriate. Would you congratulate New York on the anniversary of 9/11 (one week from today, now that I think about it)
I realize this is a dup thread. I don't know where the first one went, but I have to post this other tone-deaf statement from a former Trump administration member, that this thread brought to mind... SNIP "We have a very strong relationship with the government of Germany," Nauert said. "Looking back in the history books, today is the 71st anniversary of the speech that announced the Marshall Plan. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the D-Day invasion. We obviously have a very long history with the government of Germany, ENDSNIP https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/05/politics/state-department-heather-nauert-germany-israel/index.html Classic!!
