The U.S. military shot down an "object" that was flying in territorial waters over Alaska, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on Friday afternoon during a White House press briefing….

    Pentagon Press Secretary John

…"I can confirm that the Department of Defense was tracking a high altitude object over Alaska airspace in the last 24 hours out. The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight. Out of an abundance of caution and the recommendation of the Pentagon, President Biden ordered the military to down the object. And they did. And it came in inside our territorial waters," Kirby said…

It seems that the CCP was testing us. This is a technique they won’t get to use again. We have to shoot them all down because one day when they invade South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam all at once they will try to get one of those over the middle of Kansas again and set off an EMP device so we can respond.

Or, in his zeal to not look like a puss, again, Biden ordered the shoot down of an actual weather balloon.

No, in both cases he acted according to recommendations from the pentagon. In the first case, the large balloon was high enough to not pose a threat to commercial traffic, but large enough to pose a threat to people on the ground if destroyed over land. In the second case, the "object" was a threat to commercial traffic, and hovering over frozen water.

It's odd how vague reports are on the object. I wonder if it's something new.

Need I remind you who the Commander in Chief is and that he is not obligated to follow the recommendations of his subordinates?

This object posed no more threat to the salmon swimming in Alaska's waters than the spy balloon that was allowed to fly over them unmolested.

Biden screwed up last time, and doing the right thing this time only reinforces that fact.

If he had a reason. Unlike republicans, he at least has the wisdom to recognize when somebody else is the expert.

The arguments made sense to me. The new object is at commercial airline height and relatively small. Could be easy to accidently run into it and cause a crash. It's also over an unpopulated area. The larger balloon was higher, and harder to miss for a pilot. 3 busloads of gear would rain down on people below.

The advantage of taking it down quickly was unclear as well. Was it really getting intelligence the Chinese could get no other way that would outweigh risking lives by shooting it down fast? Hopefully the recovery effort will reveal just how useful it was to the Chinese.

Can't we just capture objects rather than destroy them? Where's Michael Keaton at? "Those are my balloons..."

Interesting thought. I'm not sure how high the object was, but makes you wonder if you could fly over it and like drop a weighted net on it or something

This object was flying at 40,000 feet which is the same as commercial airliners. The spy balloon was 60,000 ft so posed little risk to airliners.

The information is presented in the article, but seems most people didn't read it and just focused on the headline.

Well, we know he likes to lie.

And what with the way you whine about Trump, you don't have room to criticize.

It’s been said the object that was shot down was the size of a small car. If we detected that, then how did we miss the much larger balloon? Was the balloon allowed in?

I hope we didn't shoot down an actual weather balloon this time.

Hope they used guns. We can't afford to keep shooting half million dollar missiles at everything and doing so just allows a would be enemy to weaken out forces.
