She made poor decisions. He made poor decisions. She is gone and his life is changed forever. The inaction of the neighbors says a great deal about the deterioration of a sense of community in America.

Ceolwulf, since you are a new member, I will allow your thread to remain. But in future, when creating a thread, you must provide some of your own commentary. We want to hear your own opinions on the subject as well. Your provided a source, which is great - and continue to do that - but we'd also like some commentary next time, okay? :)

Not that i'm a huge proponent of having an armed society, but if those neighbors had guns and knew how to shoot, she might be alive right now. It's hard to confront a machete wielding madman without a piece. Just a though on my side

And someone just watching a horror movie with the sound up might be dead

The world is full of "maybes"

This is sad news for her and her family and you are right perhaps there should be a better way - guns are not necessarily the answer though and while America is caught in this simple response other responses will fail to come forth

I don't really see how anyone can say that her getting hacked up was a result of her making "poor decisions." Nobody deserves that fate. This was disturbing just to read.

This is another tragic example of the victimization of the white female. Stories like this only get limited local media coverage and are completely ignored by national media.

This problem is also shown by the media's lack of coverage of the death of UNC student body president Eve Carson:
    http://youtu.be/vY7o-2rNXOw
The only national attention that the Eve Carson case received was prior to the arrests. When the killers turned out to be black, the media went silent.

Same thing with Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom:

Of course it is. because we always have to put part of the blame on the victim. in our society today. It can't just be the responsibility of the person who committed the act.

But we also have to go around and make excuses for the scum bag on why it wasn't all their fault for doing such acts.

And you're right. Even just letting him look into the barrel of a rifle could have changed the situation and she'd be alive......

And what would you suggest? Inviting him in for coffee and 'let's talk about it'?

You know there ARE weapons other than guns but in the US they are so fixated on guns that they give up and will not intervene because they are not armed

I agree, but playing Devil's advocate- why risk a lawsuit in tort-crazed America? You cannot look to a judge to throw out anything anymore because the plaintiff's bar donates so heavily to political candidates- i.e. judges.

Then, the nut's family might firebomb your house in retaliation as we slide into a tribal state.

There are many other weapons besides guns. But guns keep you at a safe distance from attacks, and other things that would be a threat to your self being, and your family.

Please enlighten me - give just one example of an effective weapon that would keep me at a safe distance from a machete-yielding, out of control, frenzied lunatic and I could still hit the target....

So what's your choice? Bat? Knife? Bow & arrow? Sling-shot? Tazer gun? Maybe you'd prefer throwing rocks at him? Maybe you'd try to pepperspray him? Or maybe you know karate and you would just leap in and kick the machete out of his hand?

The victim voluntarily decided to have a relationship with the man who murdered her. Had she not so decided she would probably be alive today.

That's not what I said. Had the victim not decided to live with the individual who murdered her she would probably be alive now. Justification has nothing to do with poor choices. The fact that she was murdered by the man she chose conclusively proves that her decision was not wise.

How would she know he was to be her murderer? Would there have been any giveaways do you think? After all sociopaths are generally quite good at masking their behavioural traits, obviously he fooled her into thinking he was a normal person. How is that her fault?
