Ukraine pulls US-provided Abrams tanks from the front lines over Russian drone threats

Whoops, the ukies moved all US Abrams to a "safe space"

Seems the US wonder weapon isn't so wonderful after all. As Russian leadership had said, they will burn just like the rest (British Challengers and German Leopards).

"Ukraine has sidelined U.S.-provided Abrams M1A1 battle tanks for now in its fight against Russia, in part because Russian drone warfare has made it too difficult for them to operate without detection or coming under attack, two U.S. military officials told The Associated Press.

The U.S. agreed to send 31 Abrams to Ukraine in January 2023 after an aggressive monthslong campaign by Kyiv arguing that the tanks, which cost about $10 million apiece, were vital to its ability to breach Russian lines.

But the battlefield has changed substantially since then, notably by the ubiquitous use of Russian surveillance drones and hunter-killer drones. Those weapons have made it more difficult for Ukraine to protect the tanks when they are quickly detected and hunted by Russian drones or rounds.

Five of the 31 tanks have already been lost to Russian attacks."

I would rather you and your fellow Russia lovers left and never came back.

 

Makes sense to pull them back given the tactical situation i.e. flat, open countryside and intense low level aerial reconnaissance. Both sides have learned the hard way that in this current conflict you can't concentrate armor on the front lines without risk of detection and attack. You think Russia hasn't learnt the same lesson Bill after losing something like 60% plus of its tank combat losses to Ukrainian drones? And its lost almost 3000 tanks!

What your seeing is a shift in strategy to holding tanks in reserve until ones side or the other (this year probably Russia) decides to launch an offensive and creates a breach large/deep enough that tanks can then be moved forward to exploit it. If such a breach is achieved (and its going to be a big 'if') when the attacking side pushes their tanks through and the defender will then respond with their tanks to try and block them. Until that happens it makes no sense having tanks sitting immobile behind the front lines unless your using them for indirect fire support (which is not their intended role obviously).

The problem though will be creating that initial breach because like it or not this war has morphed into something resembling the Western Front in 1916 not the Russian steppes in 1943.

So Russia has taken out 5 Abrams in over two months. What a prodigious kill rate.

 

If that had happened in a real war between NATO and Russia the first glimpse Russians would've gotten of an Abrams would've been as U.S forces marched thru Moscow.

 

Abrams aren't wunderwaffe dude.

They're basic technology that has been around for decades.
