if you bought the basic economy ticket, you are NOT allowed carry-ons, only one personal item which in this example is probably the lady's purse. These super economy tickets were invented because of competition from airlines like Allegiant that do everything a la carte (Allegiant wanted $5 for a dam diet coke!) All she has to do is fork over the Baggage fee $50, or buy a ticket that allows carry on's. I'm guessing the "issue" was over the fee.

Then buy a ticket that allows for it, which hers apparently did not. Why spend all that money on a violin you will hurt yourself over and not spring for a ticket that allows you to use overhead storage?
The regs don't differentiate between ticket types. Per the FAA it is allowed period. It is not something that an airline can make a special ticket type to get around. Regulation vs guidelines.

Not really, since I was only addressing in context to the thread, but I can see if you didn't take that context into account how your conclusion was reached. The linked article even mentioned specifically violins as instruments that could be carried on.
First class tickets are typically double of coach. At least that's what my wife and I have always paid for them. I'd like your booking agent for my next flight if it's only $100 to $200 more please.
Exaxtly. AND with the budget tickets multiple times during the buying process you will be told "no carry-ons" and again multiple times during check in. The article is incomplete but this sounds to be a fee based confrontation, nothing more nothing less. And it is not news worthy.
My booking agent is Delta Airlines; just booked me a round trip to Atlanta from Denver, and paid $510 for the first class. Economy would have costed me $331. When you book your next flight on Delta, tell'm Dutch sent you Besides the point, anyway. Your prized musical instrument should always travel first class, even when you're not.
Because FAA regs permit small instruments to be carried on the plane as a part of carry-on luggage. Meaning that she had already bought a ticket that allowed her to. She didn't have to buy a ticket and the Supervisor was in the wrong for trying to force her to do something else. Sounds like a case of elitism to me. I am special the rules do not apply to me. You have a multi million dollar violin buy a ticket for it. How hard is that.
