And here I was thinking that the army was supposed to "rough it"!!

It would be great for disaster relief. Being in Alabama in April with a hot day and storms moving in...most of our attention is drawn to the weather.

Our downtown area got tore up three weeks ago. Small town...big wind.

Sorry to hear about that - yes I thought the same thing. Apparently the Australian army has been living in solar tents up in Afghanistan for a while now. These new designs are obviously to cut down on heating needs - still a bit of a beggar when it comes to temporary housing

The bad weather hit Arkansas and Mississippi this time. We got a straight up and down rain. It was good for the pasture and garden. The potatoes and maize (corn to us) seems to be doing real well so far. The shift in climate has brought us water.

Living in a tent with electricity sure beats living in the elements.

We have had one of the driest wet seasons on record - very little rain and the place is tinder dry

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you will get some rain during the dry season. It has happened here. It gets dry here during July through August and seldom rains in October. September usually gives us a little water. it seems nothing beats natural rain for crops. Irrigation helps but nothin beats natural rain.

Your farmers are probably suffering from a little depression about now.

Good news. Hopefully what will happen is that the youth that experiences these innovations in energy efficiency will no longer think that is some Liberal conspiracy to take over the world. Also, they can save face and preserve their macho man image if they decide to buy a LED light bulb. They could now just point to the military and claim that it was the Conservatives that brought this to Society and continue on with bashing Environmentalists . Fine by me as long as it gets done.

We do, depending on where and for how long.

Put me in a tent for a week in a North Carolina summer, and I will be fine. Put me for 9 months in a Kuwaiti summer, and I and many others will die of heat stroke.

And tents like this would go a long ways to doing a lot of things. Something of this sophistication would only be used by large non-mobile units, like field hospitals and command centers and outposts. And these types of settings generally rely on generators for their power.

When I was deployed out base was powered by hundreds of generators, running 24-7. And anything that can reduce this kind of power demand would be a good thing.

I actually came across this researching flexible solar panels - apparently an Aussie company is making them and selling them to the Aust. army as tents which are being deployed now in Afghanistan

This is a GOOD thing - I was just being a little tongue in cheek especially to those who cannot even start to acknowledge there might be a better way

No problem, I did understand where you were coming from. However, some people in here tend to have their "Literalness meter" turned to 11, and I was giving the explanation for them.

Yes, including those who believe LED's are the work of the Devil and CFC's will cause a nuclear holocaust - and then complain we are not building enough nuclear power stations lol!!

Once more Browerbird tries to create a strawman. No one has ever said that solar doesn't work. The problem is price. For the average consumer the price of firm (uninterpretable) solar is unreasonable. The batter banks needed to compensate for solar's 20-25% capacity factor makes it just too expensive.

However much as it is for NASA solar is great for the military as the flexibility of not having a fuel is worth the price. I'm more than glad to see the military adopting solar. As I have said I work in power and I have installed solar and wind generation in places where it is economically and/or logistically reasonable to do so.

The problem I have is when environmentalists try and force people to pay a high premium for grid connected solar that they don't need to save the planet. In conventional power generation grid connected solar is just fascist government boondoggle.

Want to make a bet there is not someone saying it does not work? We have more than a few members here saying that. And a lot of this is next gen solar I was researching it for camping. I was looking at the new flexible solar panels the Australian army are using as tents now.

Me, I am waiting for the even newer technology of solar paint
