While I think that it is commendable that the US government wants to protect the rights of gays and lesbians abroad, I think it needs to concentrate on the rights of its own gay and lesbian citizens first. (Let the ad hominem attacks against Clinton and Obama begin!)
I see your point. Even so, I have often (also) wept at what I see happening to others outside of America, because they are 'homosexual'. I would say that it is proper and reasonable for the Secretary of State to address the world on this matter (overall). And more toward what you're saying, I personally would like to see Mr. Obama and others in Congress address more aggressively and directly the very real issues facing homosexual people (children and adults) here in this nation.
You're right. Considering that in some parts of the world, you can be executed for being gay, it probably is not a bad idea to press for gay rights around the world.
A good step forward, but I agree we need to focus a bit more on the home front before we start pressing globally.
hmmmmmmm so, if I say that I'm oppressed in country xyz because I engage in gay sex, then i will be shown the FRONT of the line for asylum in the USA? How does the USA prove beyond a shadow of doubt that I actually engage in gay sex? Another slippery slope when liberals want to segregate people over everything imaginable. People are people and how you have sex should mean jack squat and doesn't get you a fast track to asylum; ridiculous and yet another backdoor opened for fraud and abuse.
huh? perhaps if you consider segregation a good step perhaps if you consider opening up yet another path for fraud and abuse a good step
I'm guessing Hillary will be pissing off most Muslim nations. Thankfully, America doesn't have to worry about reprisals from Islamists.
I don't see why anybody should have a problem with this. Homosexuals are treated horribly around the world. Seems pretty straightforward.
True. To liberals, some people are more equal than others. That's all we need: America telling others how to live. That's always worked out so well in the past.
No, not necessarily. But oppressing someone for being gay, is about the same as rejecting them because you don't like their 'face'. Do you think that if an organization or the government observes you (for a reasonable time) with the purpose of finding your sexual-orientation out... they likely will. If you don't think so, then look just a few months back to what was happening to THOUSANDS of U.S. Military members. It's one thing to get kicked out of the military for being homosexual... and something much more dire to be beaten-up or executed for the same. Look... if you aren't "gay", no one is seeking to reduce or remove your rights; however, gay people have great and reasonable interest in seeing to it that they are treated EQUITABLY in this nation. A cursory view of what's going on socially reveals that. Problem is that SOME make a concerted effort to discriminate against homosexual people. And unfortunately, due to prejudices and old/unjust religious traditions/beliefs... certain LAWS must be revised or even eliminated to ensure that homosexual people are viewed and treated 'equitably' under the 'law'. It is just a matter of writing laws which ensure that homosexual people are NOT discriminated against. Even so, there will always be those who try to 'game' whatever laws or system may be in place. Bottom line: U.S. laws should NOT discriminate against homosexual citizens.
Yes, we can do a lot more right here at home. But making a public statement recognizing that gay rights are civil rights sets the US clearly apart from the countries that are still practicing human rights violations on gay people. And, making that statement doesn't take anything away from moving further forward on gay rights in this country either. It's not "one or the other," it is "one AND the other!"
I completely agree. It is good to see the US taking more of stand in the global arena. Especially after some of the legislation in Africa and the middle east over the last few years. Obviously executing gays for being gay is a major humans right violation. I would like to see much more pressure on countries who take part in such behavior. Perhaps what I was hoping for was a much more direct statement, rather than a broad declaration. It will come in time.
Both liberals and conservatives "feel" some people or animals or more equal to other people and other animals I do believe gay people have as much rights as straight people, and if they want to get married, by god let them, at least they comprehend "true love" and dont base the relationship on shallow and materialistic means (at least from my experience around them)
To the OP, I would say there is a big fundamental difference between many states not having gay marriage (or civil unions, etc.) and outright punishing them for being gay. No state anywhere, no matter how opposed to gay marriage they are, punishes gays. I'm personally in favor of letting people do whatever the hell they want to do as long as they don't use force against me (My policy is if you want to marry a shoe- you marry a shoe), but there still needs to be a distinction.
Actually not to long ago in American history you could be jailed for having homosexual relations. (Aka sleeping with a member of the same gender.) I agree it's not as bad as some countries, which execute people for having gay sex, but still not the beacon of human rights that America was meant to be.
This is the type of thing you get when you start preaching to the world and telling them that they must do this and not do that .Unless you are very smart as a nation ( and that's a contradiction) you will regret speaking so loosely and without due consideration US officials announced one of its top foreign policy priorities - the enforcement of sodomy in all its forms throughout the world. The countries and people who consider sodomy a sin and a crime are now declared enemies of the United States. The head of the US State Department Hilary Clinton, a Lesbian, said that US embassies around the world received from her directives mandating an "immediate response" to all violations of the "human right" to sodomize for sodomites and sexual perverts of all breeds in a given country. America created a special "relief fund" for enforcing sodomy around the world. Speaking on the eve in Geneva, Lesbian Clinton recalled that a so-called "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" adopted by the UN in 1948, allowed "to get rid of many of the social archetypes," such as "racial and sexual discrimination." Now, she says, it's time of Sodomites.
Hey... America doesn't officially approve of slavery either. This dehumanization of gays worldwide, is truly a BAD thing, and America is correct to stand officially against it.
I am wondering if you have misunderstood ( I am polite on a Saturday.Usually it is "ignorant Hilly Billy "). These are not my words . This is News Agency copy and presumably going to be seen by millions( ? ) of Muslims . And believed . But , on further reflection , may be the release is true !!!!!! And Albert . I don't want my mind involved with any pictures where the words , " Hillary" and "Sex" are connected . But How horrific if the words , " Angela" and " Merkel" were added
OI VAY So now the US govt needs to dictate to other countries about how they deal with specific sexual acts????? Where does the big brother mentality end?
I would think that the US should openly frown upon the execution of individuals based upon their sexual orientation.
Why do you segregate it based upon a sexual act? Is it Sharia law with which there should be outrage? We just saw a woman have her head lopped off for being a "witch". I do not pinpoint my focus based upon a sexual act. You either support a country's rights as a sovereign nation or protest it across the board. You don't just focus on a sexual act because that is your specific agenda. So, again, if it's Sharia with which you have issue then voice outrage over the whole thing.
Yes, I think thats a great idea. And I say that without sarcasm. Non-democracies have no right to exist.
