Tony Abbott has intensified his campaign against potential superannuation tax rises for high-income earners, assuring voters their money would be ''safe with us'', while refusing to reverse changes.
The Opposition Leader's latest efforts to stoke fears about a looming ''betrayal'' of Australians with superannuation funds came as senior government minister Craig Emerson sought to limit the damage by stressing the target was tax breaks for the ''fabulously wealthy''.

Dr Emerson declared on Tuesday the federal budget could not afford to keep the current super tax concessions for ''the few at the very top end'' - ratcheting up his previous comments merely calling for a debate about the issue.
    ..........

Mr Abbott repeatedly refused to guarantee to wind back the government's proposed changes, saying only that the Coalition would not make matters worse.
''We aren't going to do any more damage,'' he said.
''Your money is safe with us.''
Mr Abbott reaffirmed, however, that the Coalition would scrap the super tax offset for low-income earners, prompting the government to accuse him of having skewed priorities by going after 3.6 million Australians on salaries of $37,000 or less.

I know I carry on about this scum bag time and time again, but this is clearly one of his smoke and mirrors acts again, and yet everyone falls for it. The daily telegraph as normal twists the story to suit fony abbotts deception!

I am amused that the rhetoric is already starting to change from the coalition. I had considered that this would not begin until after the election. Maybe Abbott is considering what the people are demanding... Somehow, I do not think so.

Yes, who do Labor think they are, taxing the rich to give to the poor, Robin Hood? Bring it on Abbott, I mean if the poor cannot afford bread, then let them eat cake, right?

You cannot be in good conscience or a healthy state of mind, if you are seriously advocating the ALP are the “Robin Hoods” of the working class man & woman.

In 2011 the troll queen increased her own salary by $90,000 per year - $1730 per week. The ALP Welsh Queen now earns more than the British PM, and the US President.

    http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/...uge-pay-increase/story-e6freon6-1226210702704

If memory servers me correctly, and I think it does. Was it not ALP politicians who gave pensioners a one-off payment of $250.00 in 2012 to help them before the carbon tax was introduced, but then gave themselves another $5000 per year wage increase?

Yes DV, the ALP are the real “Robin Hoods” of the working class people; giving the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society a $250 one-off payment, but rewarding themselves with a $5000 per year wage increase.

I sure the individuals who are on the lowest socio-economic benefits in Australia like pensioners and welfare recipients deserved that $96.00 per week more than those parasite ALP politicians who you bravely advocate are the defenders of Australia’s low socio-economic people.

How can you possible criticise Abbott for protecting the superannuation against an increase of tax on people who earn over $300K, and then see the ALP are feathering their own rich comfortable nests at the expense of the poor and the Australian tax payers.

I’m not disputing that you seem to be a well-meaning individual with good intentions, but your logic always seems to be sporadic, and sometimes very hypocritical.

You pick figures that you like. US presidents make squillions after they leave office, GWB has earn't 15 million bucks for 140 speeches since he left office in 2009. I know our guys earn big bucks too after they leave office, but why not, they are very underpaid in my honest opinion. It is hard to put a value on their salaries, there are also lurks and perks and their retirement funds too. But thousands of business people earn more, also have lurks and perks and big retirement deals, yet do not have the same responsibilities nor scrutiny. Yes the system sucks, a lot of things suck, if I would come up with a sensible, reasonable alternative (which I am sure you will try to) I would.

BUt what the heck has all that got to do with my post, those with the best opportunity to avoid tax, those that should pay more, because they earn more, are being looked after, they will be "Safe with us" if Abbott and his mates get in. I'm sure Abbott won't ask for the $90,000 a year to be revoked. BTW, Abbott currently earns $35k less than the US president.

So you agree with CD that the poor people who earn >$300K should pay less tax?

I believe my post was relevant to you advocating that the ALP were somehow the “Robin hood” political party of Australian society.

I provided evidence & demonstrated that the ALP were in fact NOT the “Robin Hood” political party of Australian society, but were in fact the opposite in that philosophy.

The ALP party increased their own wages by $90k per year in 2011, and gave themselves another $5,000 per year wage increase JUST before the carbon tax was introduced. Meanwhile, they gave the poorest members of Australian society a massive one-off payment of $250.00. LOL LOL

You obviously don’t have a problem with the ALP giving them wealthy selves a $95,000 wage increase within 2 years, and the poor members of society get $250,00 - but you have a problem with Abbott protecting the superannuation of people earning over $300k from being taxed from 15% to 30%.

Don’t you see any biased contradiction in your philosophy at all?

No I don't, but then I don't wear blinkers either, this OP is not about politicians salaries, it's about the rich and their super tax, what's so hard about that, that you don't understand? It's like going to your doctor and not accepting his diagnosis and treatment because he is a little overweight.

From memory, this was the first time Tony Abbott said 'Yes' to anything that Labor proposed.

    Don't get me wrong....
I'm doing alright for myself, but what I find really strange is that those least affected by Labor's Superannuation proposal (increase in tax for those who can afford it) and most affected by Abbott's proposal (Mr Abbott reaffirmed, however, that the Coalition would scrap the super tax offset for low-income earners) are Whinging the loudest.

Numerous 'Letters to the Editor' are even claiming that Labor will TAKE money out lf people's Super.
    Good Grief!!

Perhaps our Media could better spend their resources investigating the whole Super industry.

Ever ask yourself if the CEOs and those looking after your Super suffered salary/bonus losses equivalent to your Super losses as a result of the GFC and other factors??

You do realise that politicians do not choose their own salary? It is decided for them?

You do realise that the politicians actually vote on their own increases in salaries?

But I believe you are talking about the increase in 2012 that was an automatic increase for CPI, voted in by... Well I am not sure, Howard maybe? I am sure somebody will correct me here.

Some people say Australian politicians are over paid, and some claim they are under paid in comparison to what other people in similar jobs make in the private sector.

I would personally like to know what exactly do Australian politicians DO to deserve their high salaries and all the extraordinary lifetime benefits they receive?

    1) They don’t want to manage Australian owned businesses or assets.

    2) They employ other people (at tax payer expense) to do their research and work.

    3) They lie and deceive the public when ever it suits them

    4) They never answer any questions that is asked to them.

    5) They never visit any areas in Australia unless there a disaster or its election time

    6) They don’t have to abide by the same laws and conditions as ever other Australian

    7) Politicians give themselves MASSIVE wage increases like $90,000, but the true worker in Australia like nurses have to resort to strikes and protests to get a 3% wage increase over 5 years.

    8) Before politicians introduce a carbon tax that will effect the poorer members of society. They give these poor people a one off payment of $250, but give themselves a $5000 additional wage increase.

Many CEO’s in the private do get paid multi $million dollar salaries, but they also DON’T get all the additional lurks ’n’ perks after leaving the company that Australian politicians receive after they retire from Government.

People don’t think Australian politicians are over paid. Do you think its really fair that Mr. Rudd after only serving 2 ½ years as PM will receive a lifetime tax payer funded pension worth $600,000 per year until her dies for doing NOTHING?

    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/ne...0-a-year-pension/story-e6freuy9-1225885918379

Does anyone else know of any other private sector company that gives their retired CEO’s a lifetime pension of $600,000 per year, and additional lurks ’n’ perks, after they leave the company?

I wonder how many $billions of tax payers money has/is being squandered paying for the lifestyle ex-politicians seem to think they deserve.

No. Politicians don’t choose their salaries. Politicians created a specific department that decides whether or not a politicians salary needs to be increased, and they then employed everyone within that department with THEIR own hand picked bureaucrats.

Well, that’s a massively democratic process to determine a wage increase - the fox and the hen-house scenario seems to come to my mind.
