SOUTH CHINA SEA - The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca on Aug. 21.

The collision was reported at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, while the ship was transiting to a routine port visit in Singapore.

Initial reports indicate John S. McCain sustained damage to her port side aft.

Search and rescue efforts are underway in coordination with local authorities.

Details are still sketchy but 'search and rescue' sounds like this is serious.

Appears the Alnic MC is dead in the water. Location of the McCain is unknown.

Ten US sailors missing after destroyer USS John S McCain collides with oil tanker

Ten American sailors are missing and five injured after the guided-missile destroyer USS John S McCain was damaged after colliding with an oil tanker off the coast of Singapore.

The US navy said the warship had “sustained damage to her port side aft” in the collision with the Alnic MC east of the straits of Malacca and Singapore.

It is the second collision involving a ship from the navy’s 7th Fleet in the Pacific in two months. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship hit each other in waters off Japan.

“There are currently 10 sailors missing and five injured,” the navy said in a statement posted on the website of the commander of the US Pacific fleet.

“Search and rescue efforts” were underway in coordination with local authorities after the incident at 5.24am local time on Monday.

WTF! Was John McCain actually piloting the ship? I'd heard rumors the Fitzgerald might have been victim of a cyber attack?

Two in two months raises a legitimate question. The Malacca Strait is busy thought, no excuse but.... In reading and searching maritime news, in the last three days there have been three collisions between cargo ships in the area.

Hit in the rear. Unless it was going backwards, odds are it was rammed. I'll be curious how its possible to accidentally collide with a ship of this size?

These things leave some pretty massive blips on those radar thingies. Hard to fathom how its accidental, unless of course everyone was asleep.

Even If these ships are being hacked, I'm not accepting that as an excuse. In waters that are known to be that busy and crowded, how does the ship not have spotters out?

This is the first I've heard of possible hacks and it does fit. The Chinese would love to damage the reputation and fighting ability of the 7th Fleet if they are planning to try to expand their territory in the South China Sea, or to support NK.

The ship of state with Trump asleep at the wheel is in greater danger.

The Navy images of the damage makes it fairly clear the McCain has a major hull breach right along the water line. My best to those families, but as with the last one, I don't think there is a happy ending for ten of them.

At least the first indicator suggests the McCain might not have been at fault. The vessel on the right has the right of way and the damage supports the McCain was the vessel on the right. That in itself doesn't mean there was no negligence on our crew.

I see someone here is happy to hear of these missing sailors. Gives her something to take a shot at Trump with.

Geezus Christ, I saw that. "Too bad" is what you say after you stain your wedding dress or spill coffee on your rug.

My heart goes out to the families of these poor sailors. It's a terrible tragedy. I hope they are found soon so their loved ones can mourn them.
