PF user AndrogynousMale was hanging out at my place yesterday. He brought a computer he scored for $30. It seemed to work pretty well except it would randomly shut off while playing World of Tanks. That's a good sign of things overheating. The CPU had a huge heat sink and a properly functioning fan. I installed coretemp to make sure the CPU wasn't heating up. The CPU was within normal levels and he kept saying other games worked just fine. After playing some L4D2 for a while it shut off again so I was positive it was a hardware issue. I checked the video card and sure enough it was really warm and the fan didn't spin. I took the fan off and it was scorched.

I just took a case fan from my spare parts bin and tied it to the heat sink with some fishing line. It rattles a little bit since the fan isn't tightly secured but it works.
